Transport Master Plan Reaches Crescendo - Aussie Blog

Light rail

It was either the US President Teddy Roosevelt in reference to the Panama Canal or Kevin Costner in the movie ?Field of Dreams? that said ?build it and they will come?.

Who actually said it is irrelevant but what was said holds a lot of meaning. If you build something that people will appreciate and use, then they will want to be near it.

Back at the turn of the millennium our Government announced a 20 year master plan which aimed to deliver rail links to the northwest and southwest of Sydney. They also announced The West Connex road project and the bridges to the bush program.

The latest and final development is the recent announcement of a 1.6 billion light rail line to be built between Circular Quay and Sydney?s eastern suburbs. New South Wales Premier Barry O?Farrell has stated the aim of these projects is to provide ?an attractive public transport option to key locations? such as Randwick and Maroubra.

Improved transport networks (particularly light rail) are seen to have a positive effect on property prices.

A few years ago The Sydney Morning Herald highlighted a study that analysed the effect bus transit ways had in Brisbane.

?Median property values for suburbs adjacent to the transit way increased by between 3.9 per cent and 20.86 per cent within a few months of opening, compared with a value change of between minus 4.35 per cent and 6.63 per cent for non-adjacent suburbs?.

Demand for property in suburbs such as Randwick and Maroubra is expected to increase as a result of the new rail network.

With long commutes a challenge and inner-city property prices out of reach for many, the new transport system will offer improved access to job opportunities and improved wealth in surrounding suburbs.

Body of Georgian soldier found in Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? NATO says the body of a Georgian soldier who was reported missing earlier this month has been found in southern Afghanistan. The coalition says he had been captured, without providing further details.

A statement Sunday says Afghan police found the body and turned it over to NATO forces Saturday. He went missing Dec. 18 in the restive province of Helmand.

The solider from the NATO-led coalition is believed to be the first to have gone missing since a U.S. Army sergeant was captured by the Taliban more than three years ago. The dead soldier was among the 1,500 troops form the former Soviet republic of Georgia serving in Afghanistan. NATO says an investigation is underway into his capture and death.

Boston College coach breaks NCAA hockey win record

MINNEAPOLIS ? Boston College coach Jerry York became the NCAA hockey career victory leader Saturday, directing the top-ranked Eagles to a 5-3 win over Alabama-Huntsville on Saturday in the Mariucci Classic.

York has 925 victories in 41 seasons to move past former Michigan State coach Ron Mason for the record. In 19 seasons at Boston College, York is 458-223-61.

York began his career as a 26-year-old head coach at Clarkson in 1972, then took over for Mason at Bowling Green before heading to Boston College. He has won four national titles with the Eagles to go with one at Bowling Green, won against Minnesota Duluth.

Cam Spiro scored his first college goal 2:53 into the game, and the Bill Arnold and Danny Linell added goals for the Eagles in the opening period. Brendan Silk and Steven Whitney also scored for BC (12-2-1), and Parker Milner made 26 saves.

Jeff Vanderlugt and Craig Pierce scored for Alabama-Huntsville (3-15-1).

Boston College beat UMD in the quarterfinals of last season's NCAA tournament.

Cheaper Tomatoes, Strawberries Pose Challenge for Florida

Published: Saturday, December 29, 2012 at 12:01 a.m.
Last Modified: Sunday, December 30, 2012 at 3:55 a.m.

In Florida, however, the opponent is not China and other low-wage Asian nations but the rising tide of cheaper tomato and strawberry imports from Mexico, which have undercut U.S. retail and farm prices.

"They (Mexican growers) produce for the U.S. markets," said John VanSickle, an agricultural economist at the University of Florida in Gainesville who specializes in international trade issues, including tomatoes and strawberries. "The premium product goes to the U.S., and the rest stays in Mexico. If they don't have a U.S. market, they don't have a business."

Mexican strawberry imports showed the steepest rise in the last five years, jumping 142 percent from 2008 to 2011, according to the most recent statistics from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. In the first three quarters of this year, they soared 50 percent compared to the same period in 2011.

Mexican imports will likely rise less steeply in the fourth quarter because farmers in both countries faced many of the same unfavorable growing conditions, said Ted Campbell, executive director of the Florida Strawberry Growers Association in Dover, the industry's trade group.

But that doesn't mean the Mexican market threat has subsided, he said.

"They're not going away. They're going to continue to grow," Campbell said. "You can't ignore what's going on."

Mexican tomato imports have risen significantly but less sharply in the past five years, up 43.7 percent from 2008 through 2011 and another 5.6 percent in the first three 2012 quarters compared with 2011, USDA figures show.

Those numbers reflect Mexican imports of round tomatoes grown in open fields and in "hothouses," or covered areas such as a greenhouse. Those varieties most directly compete with Florida round tomatoes, the dominant variety grown here.

Mexican hothouse tomatoes, which account for about 75 percent of total imports, pose the bigger threat, the federal data shows. They've risen 74 percent from 2008 through 2011.

"In the last five to six years, Mexico has converted from a field culture to a hothouse culture," VanSickle said.

That trend will continue, he added. Among the factors fueling the transition are better prices and lower production costs, including pesticides, which appeals to U.S. consumers concerned about chemical residues on produce.

The smaller percentage growth in imports simply reflects the fact that Mexican tomatoes have been competing in the U.S. market for decades longer.

ALLEGATIONS OF DUMPING

Even at the time of the 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), Mexican tomatoes had a roughly 40 percent share of the U.S. market, said Reggie Brown, chief executive of the Maitland-based Florida Tomato Exchange, the industry trade group.

Now, its share has grown to about 50 percent currently, and continues to climb.

Florida currently has a 40 percent annual share of the U.S. market for fresh, field-grown, round tomatoes, he said, and it supplies virtually all of the domestic market in that category between December and May.

Mexican competition has sent Florida's tomato acreage down by more than 26 percent in the past decade, from 43,500 acres in the 2001-02 season to 32,000 in 2010-11, according to USDA. Brown estimated the current total at about 30,000 acres.

"It's almost entirely due to Mexican imports," said Tony DiMare, vice president of DiMare Fresh Inc., a national produce company and one of the top three U.S. tomato growers and shippers. DiMare works at the company's Apollo Beach packinghouse.

Florida tomato growers and their counterparts in other states accuse their Mexican counterparts of illegally dumping tomatoes in the U.S., or selling them at prices below the cost of production. The strategy attempts to eliminate competitors to eventually gain control of an entire market.

U.S. growers made the same charge in 1996, two years after NAFTA's enactment.

The U.S. Commerce Department, fearful the complaint would destroy the trade pact, negotiated an agreement with Mexican producer known in the industry as the "suspension agreement" because it suspended action on the dumping complaint, DiMare said.

The suspension agreement was supposed to eliminate surges of imported Mexican tomatoes to maintain stable market prices, he said.

"In my opinion, the Commerce Department failed miserably," in enforcing the agreement, said DiMare, citing the recent Mexican import growth.

U.S. growers have asked the Commerce Department to drop both the suspension agreement, scheduled to expire in January, and the 1996 dumping action. A decision on both is expected by February, Brown said.

Rulings in favor of U.S. tomato growers would allow them to proceed with a new dumping complaint, widely expected to happen.

BATTLING STRAWBERRIES

Mexican imports had their biggest effect on the U.S. tomato and strawberry markets during the 2011-12 season, when a flood of both commodities sent prices plummeting, Campbell and DiMare said.

Farmers in Florida and Mexico lost money last season because of depressed prices, they said.

"We had such depressed prices last year, we couldn't recover our picking, packing and transportation costs," DiMare said. "They (Mexican growers) inundated their own market. They absolutely destroyed the U.S. market."

Wholesale strawberry prices a year ago fell to $7 per flat, or the break-even point, by Christmas, Campbell and growers reported earlier. They recovered briefly in January but sank again the following month.

Because of lower volumes, wholesale strawberry prices returned to a normal levels this season, USDA figures show. Prices averaged about $26 per flat in early December, when Florida is the exclusive domestic strawberry producer, and were about $17.50 on Thursday.

Florida strawberry growers generally harvest until March, when California production ramps up, sending wholesale price below the break-even point.

The significance of the Mexican competition is that its growers compete in the same market windows traditionally dominated by Florida tomato and strawberry growers. Leaders in both commodities view Mexico as a continuing threat.

"If we have seasons like we had last year, where import volumes kept prices so low and made it impossible to sell at a profit, this industry can't maintain those types of losses," Brown said.

NEW GROWING METHODS

The state's tomato and strawberry growers can compete with Mexico, VanSickle said, but both will have to transition to newer technologies.

In both cases, that would include following their Mexican competitors by turning to "covered agriculture," he said. That would include growing in traditional greenhouses or other closed environments, such as large plastic tunnels put up over an entire crop row.

VanSickle, who consults for Florida tomato growers, has delivered that message to industry leaders without much effect, he said.

DiMare and Brown agreed the Florida climate makes covered agricultural production unworkable and the costs "prohibitive," particularly in the current profit environment.

The price to build a one-acre greenhouse, including temperature controls, would run about $1 million, Brown said.

An acre of plastic tunnels over strawberries would cost $30,000, Campbell said, and all could be blown away with a single hurricane or tropical storm.

VanSickle acknowledged a transition would come with big up-front costs, but he maintained growers, particularly tomato growers, could recover by supplying a better product that would fetch a higher market price.

"In this era, consumers are willing to pay more for a better-tasting tomato," VanSickle said.

"If they want to compete, they've got to change the way they're doing business."

One Pound Fish Music Video - Business Insider

A Pakistani fishmonger working in London is the world's latest viral-video sensation, with a Warner Music record deal, a hit song on iTunes, and 16 million views on YouTube.

Muhammad Shahid Nazir is so influential now in his home country that Pakistan has lifted a block on YouTube so citizens can celebrate their musical hero, the New York Times reports.

Nazir made up a song, "One Pound Fish," which he sang to bait customers for the Upton Park market stall where he sold fish. Colin Miller, a British Web designer, filmed him nine months ago. But the video didn't start going crazy until early December.

Now there's an "o-fish-al" music video and Nazir's returned to Pakistan, where he's being celebrated for his global Internet pop-culture victory.

He's far from touching the record set in 2012 by Korean pop artist Psy, whose "Gangnam Style" beat out longtime champion Justin Bieber for the most-watched video on YouTube with 1 billion views.

But it's more confirmation of the transformative power of YouTube to disseminate mass culture globally in the blink of an eye.

Also, it's completely bonkers.

Here's the original performance and the music video, which combined have more than 16 million views.

Celebrating Motherhood: A well placed thought

?Walking the long driveway the gravel gives way under my feet. The mailbox overflowing with cards from friends far and wide. The bitter cold reminding me that this year is almost over. Come and gone. The cold has us indoors a lot and I'm reading words more than ever. Not feeling like myself lately. All the change that takes place in ones life in a year has taken it's toll on me. With having 13 children over the summer and running on next to nothing but keeping on because someone needed to. Having a bustling farm with new animals to train and then the winter.?

?I'm doing a lot of thinking..which my husband says is never good. ??

Thinking about my life and how odd it seems to be moving out of the "baby stage" and into the "middle stage" of my life.

Not having to buy diapers or get up in the middle of the night. Having the freedom to go places and see new things with all my children is all different. I have always had a baby for the past 20 years and so now when I find myself in a new place I go from wanting to cry to wanting to dance??

Strange place I know, but I get to do all the things I never could.

I get to sleep in a little, and I have everyone helping so things don't seem so overwhelming. My older young adults are doing things outside of the home

and I see what's happening. I go from crying out to God to stop everything

to being excited at what the next stage holds.

But right now a?calm is settling over the farm after years of survival mode and I'm trying to decide if I like the way that sounds.

I haven't figured that out yet.?

You'll be the first to know when I do.

Years running on an adrenal rush now I'm watching them and enjoying them like never before. I get to know them in a way that has seemed impossible until now.

Seeing them move into the middle stage with me. Seeing and feeling how they need me so much more the older they get. I always thought it odd when people would say that.

?"oh they'll need you more when they're 18-21"?

I couldn't imagine that but now?I know it's true.

?Hours of counseling and reassuring.?

There is no feed, diaper and put to bed.

?These are real issues for them and so you make room in your bed and they lay in the darkness talking and I'm listening.

?I have taught them in they way they should go like proverbs instructed me

and now I have to step back and let God take them the rest of the way.

Helping them make career choices

Praying like never before for

?Godly spouses.

You always pray that prayer "Lord, please be preparing

their spouses" but when you have to be patient and wait with

them you learn that their faith is required.

They have to believe that?God has the perfect person for them but its His timing not ours. And well,?this can seem to take forever for them.

I believe that 18-21 has been and will be the testing ground for what I have taught them.?I have come up short in some areas believe me, so I take notes on what I'll be doing different with the new batch coming up:)

Yeah, it all takes more time and a lot more patience and it takes a lot of change

from me. From being the one in charge to letting go and letting them take a leap of Faith and know that God has this.

Ex-MLB All-Star Returns To Baseball After Prison Release

CARACAS, Venezuela -- Former major league pitcher Ugueth Urbina returned to baseball Friday after serving 7 1/2 years in prison for the attempted murder of five workers on his family's ranch.

Before taking the field in his native Venezuela to play for the Lions of Caracas, Urbina described himself as "more mature" and said he was "very excited to play baseball again."

"I'm excited to be here," Urbina told reporters at the University Stadium in Caracas, where the Lions played the Zulia Eagles.

The 38-year-old pitcher was released from prison Sunday after serving roughly half of his 14-year sentence for attempted murder during a dispute over a gun on Oct. 16, 2005.

Urbina was found guilty of attacking and injuring workers with a machete. Several other men participated in the attack at his family's ranch, located about 25 miles from Caracas.

Urbina, who pitched for the Montreal Expos, Boston Red Sox, Texas Rangers, Florida Marlins, Detroit Tigers and Philadelphia Phillies, has repeatedly denied involvement with the incident that landed him in prison, saying he was sleeping at the time of the attack.

A two-time All-Star, Urbina saved 237 big league games from 1995-2005. He had two saves in the 2003 World Series to help the Marlins beat the New York Yankees, and last pitched in the majors with the Phillies in 2005.

Urbina told reporters he hopes to play professional baseball in the United States again.

"The first order of business is pitching in Venezuela," he said.

An image gallery gift from NASA's Swift

Dec. 28, 2012 ? Of the three telescopes carried by NASA's Swift satellite, only one captures cosmic light at energies similar to those seen by the human eye. Although small by the standards of ground-based observatories, Swift's Ultraviolet/Optical Telescope (UVOT) plays a critical role in rapidly pinpointing the locations of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), the brightest explosions in the cosmos.

But as the proxy to the human eye aboard Swift, the UVOT takes some amazing pictures. The Swift team is celebrating eight years of UVOT operations by collecting more than 100 of the instrument's best snapshots in a web-based photo gallery (http://www.swift.psu.edu/uvot/coolPics.php). The images also can be viewed with the free Swift Explorer Mission iPhone app (https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/swift-explorer/id465669299?mt=8) developed by the Swift Mission Operations Center (MOC), which is located in State College, Pa., and operated by Penn State.

Swift has detected an average of about 90 GRBs a year since its launch in 2004. "When we aren't studying GRBs, we use the satellite's unique capabilities to engage in other scientific investigations, some of which produce beautiful images from the UVOT that we're delighted to be able to share with the public," said Michael Siegel, the lead scientist on the UVOT and a research associate in astronomy and astrophysics at the MOC.

The targets range from comets and star clusters to supernova remnants, nearby galaxies and active galaxies powered by supermassive black holes.

"One of our more challenging projects in the past was completing an ultraviolet mosaic of M31, the famous Andromeda galaxy," said Stefan Immler, a member of the Swift team at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. "Because the galaxy is so much larger than the UVOT field of view, we had to take dozens of pictures and blend them together to show the whole object."

An ongoing mosaic project targets the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds, two small satellite galaxies orbiting our own, and makes the Andromeda effort look like child's play. Although the galaxies are much smaller than M31, they are both much closer to us and extend over much larger areas of the sky. The task involves acquiring and aligning hundreds of images and is far from complete.

With the UVOT's wavelength range of 1,700 to 6,000 angstroms, Swift remains one of few missions that study ultraviolet light, much of which is blocked by Earth's atmosphere.

The 6.5-foot-long (2 meter) UVOT is centered on an 11.8-inch (30 cm) primary mirror. Designed and built by the Mullard Space Science Laboratory in Surrey, England, the telescope module includes the primary and secondary mirrors, an external baffle to reduce scattered light, two redundant detectors -- only one has been used to date -- and a power supply.

Each detector lies behind an identical filter wheel. The wheel holds color filters that transmit a broad range of wavelengths as well as devices called grisms, which spread out incoming light in much the same way as a prism spreads sunlight into a rainbow of component colors. The detectors retain information on the position and arrival time of each photon of light, an operating mode similar to typical X-ray telescopes.

Because most ultraviolet light never reaches the ground, Swift's UVOT provides a unique perspective on the cosmos. For example, it can measure the amount of water produced in passing comets by detecting the ultraviolet emission of hydroxyl (OH), one of the molecular fragments created when ultraviolet sunlight breaks up water molecules. Other types of UVOT science include exploring emissions from the centers of active galaxies, studying regions undergoing star formation, and identifying some of the rarest and most exotic stars known.

Toward the end of its energy-producing life, a star like the sun will blow away its outer layers as its core transforms into a compact, Earth-sized remnant known as a white dwarf. This chapter of stellar evolution, known to astronomers as the post-asymptotic giant branch phase, lasts only about 100,000 years -- just an eye-blink in comparison to the star's total lifetime. To better understand the process, astronomers need to study large numbers of these unusual stars.

"The UVOT's capabilities give us a great tool for surveying stellar populations and cataloging rare types of ultraviolet-bright stars," Siegel explained.

One of the first targets for the stellar survey was the giant cluster Omega Centauri, which hosts millions of stars and may be the remains of a small galaxy. Thanks to Swift's UVOT, astronomers at Goddard and Penn State have cataloged hundreds of rare stellar types in the cluster and are now comparing their properties and numbers to predictions from theoretical models describing how stars evolve.

Hi,

You mean video and audio streaming?

You will need to have an ffmpeg, mp4 box, flvtool2,mencoder and mplayer, ffmpeg-php capable server. You can also look into red5 media server as an option.

Additional items you would need is a reliable flash player like the ones offered by jwplayer and flowmotion.

If you have a limited bandwidth on your hosting account, make sure to have your video metadata injected with flvtool2 (flv files only), for the h264 and mp4 you can move the moov atom in the front of the video, by using mp4box. These tools will allow you to pseudo-stream your contents without translating all the media file size into bandwidth consumptions.

Lastly, you will need to know all of the basics of ffmpeg-php and the basics ffmpeg encoding commands.

You will need to look for a reliable hosting company. This is the hosting company I used for developing video streaming applications.

I think they also have a ready to install FREE video streaming applications e.g. phpmotion, clic bucket, vidiscript and many others.

MORE INFO. NOT RELATED TO YOUR QUESTION
I was one of the developer of the vidiscript open-source version 1.0 to version 1.3, but that is the old version we wrote that is still being distributed by most ffmpeg hosting companies. I was able to released all the bug fixes two years ago 2010 and then it was followed by major fix for php 5.3+ in my last year release.

I wrote version 3.7 of the open source, but got really busy at my schooling, and then I have to trashed bin all of the 3.7 version because I want to write it as a video content management using my own mvc framework with an option of smarty, twig and tinybutstrong template engines. I am still on track for my projected release date by mid 2013. This will be called veedeoo scripts which is an open source.

Measuring Search Engines Advertising Campaigns

Advertising Search Engines provides the best means of placing the PPC Advertising on the internet which will attract many eyeballs for sure. This opportunity of presenting consumers with the PPC advertisements tailored to meet their immediate buying interests encourages consumers to click on searchads instead of unpaid search results, which are often less relevant and appealing. By smart and innovative way of advertisement designs all the customers tend to click on the ads thus driving higher traffic and revenues to the publishers.

This PPC Advertising is sold and delivered on the basis of keywords by all the Advertising Search Engines. Keywords are the phrases or queries that the internet users search for on the search engines to get their desired information. The keywords that the PPC ad campaign uses can be more than a single word in length. The Advertising Search Engines conduct running auctions to sell ads according to the bids received for keywords and relative relevance of user keywords to ads in the account. However, some keywords are more expensive and some are offered at a very low price based on their demand for the internet users. Also, Profit potential of the keywords also takes into account for the bids made on ads that advertisers want to display when the keywords are searched by the user.

All these bidding and selling of PPC Advertising on the Advertising Search Engines is measured using five different parameters. The advertisers have to pay according to the type of paying options they choose to pay the publishers. Let???s see here at all the five of them.

Cost Per Click (CPC):
CPC or Cost Per Click is an Internet advertising model used to direct traffic to websites, where advertisers pay the publisher when the particular ad is clicked. Advertising Search Engines offers advertisers to typically bid on keyword phrases relevant to their target market. However, content sites generally charge a fixed price per click rather than use a bidding system. In traditional marketing, CPC was viewed as a one way process of reaching target audiences through means such as direct mail, radio ads and television ads whereas of now two way contacts are possible through web based chat, Internet based calls, call back requests or mailing list sign ups and more.

Cost Per Action (CPA):

CPA or Cost Per Action is an online advertising pricing model, where the advertiser pays for each specified action linked to the advertisement. The CPA can be determined by different factors, depending where the online advertising inventory is being purchased. Affiliate networks operate on a CPA basis. CPA systems function most effectively when sales cycles are short and easily tracked. Longer sales cycles and sales requiring multiple customer contacts can be difficult to track, leading to reluctance by publishers to participate in CPA programs beyond initial lead generation.

Cost Per Mille (CPM):

Cost Per Mille or CPM also called as Cost Per Thousand is a commonly used measurement in advertising like TV, Radio and Online advertising. CPM remains the most common method for pricing banner ads.

Click Through Rate (CTR):

CTR or Click Through Rate is a way of measuring the success of an online advertising campaign for a particular website as well as the effectiveness of an email campaign. It measures the number of times an ad is clicked as a percentage of views of the Web page on which the ad appears.

Total Minutes (TM):

Total Minutes or TM is a metric used by net ratings to measure the total time spent on a Web page rather than the number of Web page views.

Certainly, PPC Advertising campaigns can produce immediate results by driving maximum traffic in less time and thus adding up to the revenues.

US household debt burden hits 29-year low

1 hr.

WASHINGTON --?A measure of the burden of U.S. household debt tumbled in the third quarter to its lowest level in 29 years, which should help free up money for consumer spending and support the economy.

The household debt service ratio -- an estimate of the share of debt payments to disposable personal income -- fell to 10.61 percent from 10.72 percent in the second quarter, the Federal Reserve said on Thursday.

It was the lowest level since the fourth quarter of 1983.

"Consumers have more money in their pockets to spend, which should be positive for the economic recovery going forward," said Gennadiy Goldberg, an economist at TD Securities in New York.

U.S. households built up a massive debt load as the housing bubble expanded and efforts to pay down those debts have been a restraint on spending and the economy's recovery.

The debt service ratio, which takes into account outstanding mortgage and consumer debt, peaked in the third quarter of 2007, shortly before the economy tipped into recession.

The Fed has sought to help consumers dig out by keeping interest rates near record lows. It has held overnight rates near zero since December 2008 and has bought around $2.4 trillion in bonds to further lower borrowing costs.

Even though households are now in better shape, analysts caution that consumer spending could stall if Congress fails to prevent higher taxes from taking hold next year.

An even broader measure of financial obligations that includes automobile lease payments and the cost of renting a home also fell in the third quarter, dropping to 15.74 percent of disposable income -- the lowest level since the first quarter of 1984.

That drop reflected an easier burden for homeowners as mortgage debt payments dropped to 8.90 percent of disposable income in the third quarter, the lowest in 11 years.

Both the overall homeowners measure and separate mortgage gauge peaked in the third quarter of 2007.

"You have a lot of people refinancing their mortgages at lower rates," Goldberg said.

In contrast, the relative cost of rent rose to its highest level since the first quarter of 2010.

The weak housing market has led Americans away from home ownership and toward renting, pushing up rents. At the same time, a modest economic recovery has encouraged some people who had moved in with family and friends to seek their own lodgings, further strengthening the rental market.

While a lightening of household debt burden puts the recovery on firmer ground, it also highlights a hesitance to take on new debt, which could be an obstacle to spending.

"We all (would) like to see better growth in credit, banks being more willing to make more loans to consumers, demand for loans rising," said Omair Sharif, an economist at RBS in Stamford, Connecticut.

"That would push the ratio higher, but that's not necessarily a such a bad thing, especially if rates are so low and you are able to service that debt."

(AP) ? Nearly a month after leaving the Los Angeles Galaxy, David Beckham is considering "a number of serious proposals" but is in no rush to find a new team.

He has been linked to clubs in France, Australia and Asia in what would be the final chapter of the illustrious career of the 37-year-old midfielder and former England captain.

A "host of clubs" have made offers, Beckham's management company said in a statement to The Associated Press on Thursday, but it remains "early days in the process."

"David is in no hurry to make a decision, the key is making the right one as he has always done successfully in his career," the statement said.

Beckham ended his five-year stint in the United States by helping the Galaxy win the MLS Cup on Dec. 1.

He has said it's unlikely he will return to the English Premier League, where he starred for Manchester United from 1993 to 2003. Beckham is also reported to have ruled out a move to Australia's A-League.

The French sports newspaper L'Equipe said Thursday that Monaco, an ambitious French second-division club, has ended talks with Beckham, although his advisers have refused to comment.

"David is enjoying spending quality time with his family over the holidays," his management company said.

Beckham has also played for Real Madrid in Spain and AC Milan on loan in Italy.

Study ties drug shortage to poorer cancer survival - Salt Lake Tribune

Young cancer patients who couldn?t get a key medicine because of a national drug shortage were more likely to suffer a relapse than others who were able to get the preferred treatment, doctors report. It?s the first evidence that a long-standing drug-supply problem probably has affected cancer treatment results in specific patients.

The study involved more than 200 children and young adults with a blood cancer called Hodgkin lymphoma. Like childhood leukemia, it can be cured nearly 80 percent of the time. But a drug shortage that has worsened since 2009 is threatening that success rate, doctors report in Thursday?s New England Journal of Medicine.

Hundreds of drugs, including sedatives, antibiotics, painkillers and cancer treatments, have gone in and out of short supply in recent years. Reasons include manufacturing and contamination problems, plant shutdowns, and fewer makers and lower profits for certain drugs, especially generics infused during surgery or cancer treatment.

Doctors sometimes substitute different drugs for ones in short supply. But proving that the swaps led to poorer results has been tough, especially for cancer patients whose disease and response to treatment vary so much.

"We really couldn?t put our finger on, did anybody really suffer?" said Dr. Michael Link, a cancer specialist at Stanford University and past president of the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

The new study, led by Dr. Monika Metzger of St. Jude Children?s Research Hospital in Memphis, gives the best evidence so far that patients are suffering.

It focused on mechlorethamine, or nitrogen mustard, a drug that has been in short supply until last month, when more became available. Doctors compared results among 181 Hodgkin lymphoma patients who received the drug to 40 others who were given a different chemotherapy, cyclophosphamide, when the first choice was unavailable.

Only 75 percent of those given the substitute drug stayed free of cancer for two years versus 88 percent who received the preferred treatment.

"We can think of no credible explanation for this dramatic difference" other than the drug substitution, the authors wrote.

No patients died, but those who relapsed were given more aggressive treatments, including stem-cell transplants that have more side effects and can harm fertility.

story continues below

One of them was Abby Alonzo, of Port St. Lucie, Fla. She was diagnosed with lymphoma three years ago, when she was 10. After eight weeks of treatment with the preferred drug, "she was doing wonderfully," said her mother, Katie Alonzo.

Then doctors said they were out of it.

"I said, what do you mean, we don?t have the medication my child needs?" Katie Alonzo said.

After four weeks on the substitute chemo, Abby?s cancer had returned and spread to more places, her mother said. The child received high doses of chemotherapy and radiation and now seems cancer-free, although the treatments damaged her lung capacity, leaving her short of breath.

"When your child has cancer you live day by day," and to find out a life-saving medicine isn?t available is "very, very frightening," Katie Alonzo said.

High Blood Pressure (Hypertension) | Fitness and Health Point ...

High blood pressure, the pressure in the vessels is increased. This increases the risk for stroke, vascular disease and other serious heart condition

Classic blood pressure: pressure cuff on the upper arm, listening to the sound when you release the pressure (Sphygmanometrie and auscultation)

Survey

Normal blood pressure is below 140/90 mmHg. High blood pressure (or hypertension also called arterial hypertension), these measurements are repeated or consistently exceeded.

High blood pressure occurs mainly as primary hypertension, ie high blood pressure ?in itself.? This means that it is not caused by other diseases. Only about ten to fifteen percent of people with specific diseases, such as kidney, adrenal or thyroid glands are the cause (secondary hypertension). With the treatment of these diseases is often regulated, the increased blood pressure.

However, the problem is that high blood pressure often initially makes no complaints. He usually remains undetected once. The health consequences are long term, however severe. Constantly high pressure strain on the heart. It also constricts the blood vessels, accelerating atherosclerosis (arteriosclerosis) and deteriorated to the circulation.

Therefore, high blood pressure is a leading risk factor for stroke and the next Diabetes (diabetes mellitus) and dyslipidemia a major cause of heart disease such as heart attack and heart failure. The risk of disability and death is high blood pressure increased significantly with these complications.

Wall Street drops in thin session, led by retailers

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks fell for a third straight day on Wednesday, dragged lower by retail stocks after a report showed consumers spent less in the holiday shopping season than last year.

Trading was light, with volume at a mere 4.01 billion shares traded on the New York Stock Exchange, the Nasdaq and NYSE MKT, well below the daily average so far this year of about 6.48 billion shares. The day's volume was the lightest full day of trading so far in 2012. Many senior traders were still on vacation during this holiday-shortened week and major European markets were closed for the day.

Many investors said concerns about the "fiscal cliff" kept shoppers away from stores, suggesting markets may struggle to gain any ground until that issue is resolved. The CBOE Volatility Index <.vix> or VIX, Wall Street's favorite barometer of investor anxiety, rose 4.46 percent, closing above 19 for the first time since November 7.

A number of 2012's strongest performers advanced, a sign that portfolio managers may be engaging in "window dressing," a practice where market participants buy securities with big gains to improve the appearance of their holdings before presenting the results to clients. Bank of America Corp , which has more than doubled in 2012, added 2.6 percent to $11.54 on Wednesday.

Holiday-related sales rose 0.7 percent from October 28 through December 24, compared with a 2 percent increase last year, according to data from MasterCard Advisors SpendingPulse. The Morgan Stanley retail index <.mvr> skidded 1.8 percent while the SPDR S&P Retail Trust slipped 1.7 percent.

"With the 'fiscal cliff' hanging over our heads, it was hard to convince people to shop, and now it's hard to convince investors that there's any reason to buy going into year-end," said Rick Fier, director of trading at Conifer Securities in New York, which has about $12 billion in assets under administration.

President Barack Obama is due back in Washington early Thursday for a final effort to negotiate a deal with Congress to bridge a series of tax increases and government spending cuts set to begin next week, the so-called "fiscal cliff" many economists worry could push the U.S. economy into recession if it takes effect.

Coach Inc fell 5.9 percent to $54.13 as the S&P 500's biggest decliner, followed by Amazon.com , down 3.9 percent at $248.63, and Abercrombie & Fitch , off 3.5 percent at $45.44. Ralph Lauren Corp , Limited Brands and Gap Inc also ranked among the S&P 500's biggest decliners.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> slipped 24.49 points, or 0.19 percent, to 13,114.59 at the close. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> shed 6.83 points, or 0.48 percent, to 1,419.83. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> dropped 22.44 points, or 0.74 percent, to 2,990.16.

J.C. Penney Co was a notable exception to the weakness in retail stocks, surging 4.4 percent to $20.75 as the S&P 500's biggest gainer. It was followed closely by Bank of America and Genworth Financial , which each gained nearly 3 percent for the day.

"People want to show they own names like these, making them prime 'window dressing' candidates," said Wayne Kaufman, chief market analyst at John Thomas Financial in New York.

"Bank of America keeps going up even though it's overbought and you'd expect a pullback at these levels. No one wanted it when it was under $10 a share, but they want it now."

The S&P 500 has fallen 1.5 percent over the past three sessions, the worst three-day decline since mid-November. The Dow Jones Transportation Average <.djt>, viewed as a proxy for business activity, fell 0.6 percent.

A Republican plan that failed to gain traction last week triggered the S&P 500's recent drop, highlighting the market's sensitivity to headlines centered on the budget talks.

During the last five trading days of the year and the first two of next year, it's possible for a "Santa rally" to occur. Since 1928, the S&P 500 has averaged a gain of 1.8 percent during that period and risen 79 percent of the time, according to data from PrinceRidge.

"While it's unlikely there could be a budget deal at any time, no one wants to get in front of that trade," said Conifer's Fier. "Investors can easily make up for any gains when there's more action in 2013."

Data showed U.S. single-family home prices rose in October, reinforcing the view that the domestic real estate market is improving, as the S&P/Case-Shiller composite index of 20 metropolitan areas gained 0.7 percent in October on a seasonally adjusted basis.

Decliners outnumbered advancers on the New York Stock Exchange by a ratio of about 2 to 1, while on the Nasdaq, more than five stocks fell for every three that rose.
