Stocks make a U-turn, rising after big decline
NEW YORK (AP) ? Investors on Wednesday all but forgot the previous day's burdens and sent stocks soaring. It was a stark turnaround from the day before, when they'd pushed the market into a free-fall on worries about European debt and corporate earnings in the U.S.
Those fears about problems festering on both sides of the Atlantic were calmed thanks to a surprising profit from Alcoa and news that borrowing costs in Spain had edged down, a potential sign that investors have more faith ? for now, anyway ? in that country's financial health.
The result was a U-turn on Wall Street. The Dow Jones industrial average climbed as much as 129 points in early trading before settling at 12,805.39, up 89.46 points. The previous day, it had lost 214 points, the cap to its biggest and longest losing streak this year.
European markets rose, too. Stocks climbed roughly 1 percent in major capitals, excluding Greece, after losing 2 to 3 percent the day before. Treasury prices fell, signaling that investors are more willing to put money in stocks.
Other U.S. indexes also erased much of the previous day's losses. The Standard & Poor's 500 rose 10.12 points to 1,368.71 after losing 24 points the day before. The Nasdaq composite climbed 25.24 points to 3,016.46 following a 56-point loss Tuesday.
Alcoa rose more than 6 percent after reporting late Tuesday that it turned a profit in the first three months of the year and handily beat the expectations of Wall Street analysts, who were predicting a loss. Since Alcoa is the first company in the Dow average to report earnings, its results have a greater ability to move the market compared with companies that report later. More first-quarter results will be released over the next few weeks.
Market watchers were divided over how long the gains would last and whether Alcoa's profits actually mean anything for the rest of the earnings season.
"I'm not predicting we're going to have a blowout earnings quarter," said David Armstrong, managing director of Monument Wealth Management in Alexandria, Va. "But I think if people thought earnings season was going to be bad, they may be pleasantly surprised."
"One earnings report?" countered Uri Landesman, president of the New York hedge fund Platinum Partners. The boost "will last until the first bad number."
For Europe as well, investors seemed anxious to latch onto any piece of good news. They were cheered that the rate on Spain's 10-year bonds dropped slightly after nearing 6 percent on Tuesday. Seven percent is generally considered the rate at which it becomes too expensive for a country to borrow money.
Investors chose, largely, to ignore other signs blaring that problems in Europe are only hibernating and not solved. Spain's borrowing costs are still dangerously high. Italy sold 12-month bonds but was forced to pay more than double the interest rate it paid last month. Even Germany, whose bonds are considered a safer investment, failed to sell all the 10-year bonds it had intended to.
In Greece and France, upcoming elections threaten to unravel the uneasy peace that has been reached between the weak and strong countries in Europe. New leaders could unwind hard-fought deals that require Greece and others to cut spending in order to get bailout loans. Greece's unpredictability rose to a new level Wednesday when the country announced it would hold parliamentary elections months ahead of schedule.
Landesman described the dealmaking as "Band-Aid after Band-Aid," rather than a real solution addressing Europe's deep-rooted problems of overspending. "You can't do that forever," Landesman said. "There is a day of reckoning."
If it is hard to predict news out of Europe, it's equally difficult to guess how investors will react to it ? panicking one day and shrugging off similar developments on another day. There are plenty of days the market swings on news out of Europe that is merely incremental, or even when there's no news at all.
"A possible European recession? I don't really think that's new," said Armstrong. "For people reacting as if this is new news, I think that's poor discipline as a (long-term) investor."
Europe's debt crisis and concerns about U.S. earnings haven't been the only problems for the market in recent weeks. There are also signs that job growth is slowing and that the Federal Reserve is disinclined to pump more money into the economy.
Wednesday's gains still don't make up for the market's second-quarter losses. Wednesday was just the second gain for the Dow in the seven trading days so far this quarter. The Dow was up 8 percent at the end of the first quarter, but it's down 3 percent so far for the second.
From a longer-term viewpoint, however, the market's recent swings have been relatively mild. The Dow plunged nearly 550 points in the five days ending Tuesday, a molehill compared to the mountain of last summer's frightening drops. Those included an 858-point, eight-day plunge in July and August, as Congress bickered over government debt limits and the S&P prepared to downgrade the U.S. debt rating.
In fact, the market's steady rise from Thanksgiving to the end of March has kept the losses of the last few days from being any worse, said Frank Fantozzi, CEO of Planned Financial Services in Cleveland.
"It's like a person," Fantozzi said. "If you're feeling good overall and a couple negative things happen, you just shrug it off. If you're feeling lousy and you get some good news, you still feel lousy."
Among stocks making big moves:
?Titan Machinery, which sells agricultural and construction equipment, jumped nearly 17 percent after reporting a big increase in quarterly profit.
?Cell phone maker Nokia plummeted nearly 16 percent after warning that heavy competition will hurt first-quarter results.
?Travelzoo, the online travel company, soared more than 28 percent after reports that it plans to sell itself to private firms.

Bats save energy by drawing in wings on upstroke
ScienceDaily (Apr. 11, 2012) ? Bat wings are like hands: meaty, bony and full of joints. A new Brown University study finds that bats take advantage of their flexibility by folding in their wings on the upstroke to save inertial energy. The research suggests that engineers looking at flapping flight should account for wing mass and consider a folding design.Whether people are building a flying machine or nature is evolving one, there is pressure to optimize efficiency. A new analysis by biologists, physicists, and engineers at Brown University reveals the subtle but important degree to which that pressure has literally shaped the flapping wings of bats.
The team's observations and calculations show that by flexing their wings inward to their bodies on the upstroke, bats use only 65 percent of the inertial energy they would expend if they kept their wings fully outstretched. Unlike insects, bats have heavy, muscular wings with hand-like bendable joints. The study suggests that they use their flexibility to compensate for that mass.
"Wing mass is important and it's normally not considered in flight," said Attila Bergou, who along with Daniel Riskin is co-lead author of the study that appears April 11 in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B. "Typically you analyze lift, drag, and you don't talk about the energy of moving the wings."
The findings not only help explain why bats and some birds tuck in their wings on the upstroke, but could also help inform human designers of small flapping vehicles. The team's research is funded by the U.S. Air Force Office of Sponsored Research.
"If you have a vehicle that has heavy wings, it would become energetically beneficial to fold the wings on the upstroke," said Sharon Swartz, professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at Brown. She and Kenneth Breuer, professor of engineering, are senior authors on the paper.
The physics of flexed flapping
The team originally set out to study something different: how wing motions vary among bats along a wide continuum of sizes. They published those results in 2010 in the Journal of Experimental Biology, but as they analyzed the data further, they started to consider the intriguing pattern of the inward flex on the upstroke.
That curiosity gave them a new perspective on their 1,000 frames-per-second videos of 27 bats performing five trials each aloft in a flight corridor or wind tunnel. They tracked markers on the bats, who hailed from six species, and measured how frequently the wings flapped, how far up and down they flapped, and the distribution of mass within them as they moved. They measured the mass by cutting the wing of a bat that had died into 32 pieces and weighing them.
The team fed the data in to a calculus-rich model that allowed them to determine what the inertial energy costs of flapping were and what they would have been if the wings were kept outstretched.
Bergou, a physicisist, said he was surprised that the energy savings was so great, especially because the calculations also showed that the bats have to spend a lot of energy -- 44 percent of the total inertial cost of flapping -- to fold their wings inward and then back outward ahead of the downstroke.
"Retracting your wings has an inertial cost," Bergou said. "It is significant but it is outweighed by the savings on the up and down stroke."
The conventional wisdom has always been that bats drew their wings in on the upstroke to reduce drag in the air, and although the team did not measure that, they acknowledge that aerodynamics plays the bigger role in the overall energy budget of flying. But the newly measured inertial savings of drawing in the wings on the upstroke seems too significant to be an accident.
"It really is an open question whether natural selection is so intense on the design and movement patterns of bats that it reaches details of how bats fold their wings," Swartz said. "This certainly suggests that this is not a random movement pattern and that it is likely that there is an energetic benefit to animals doing this."

Fitness is More than Just Exercising But You Can't Get Fit Without it ...
Everyone can get fit. There is no reason that you shouldn?t be able to get reasonably fit if you are patient and willing to do the work involved to change. More and more people are concerned with their health every year. Take a moment and think: how much do you think something like ?I really need to be healthier?? How many times do you think to yourself ?I need to exercise more?? Health and fitness are very real concerns all over the world. If you have been thinking about trying to get fit, here are a few hints that can help you out. Also, in case you?re interested, an effective way to build some additional muscle is with Bodylastics bands.
Work your entire body. Don?t listen to people who tell you that you only have to concentrate on the parts of your body that you want to improve. To be successful you will need to put together a routine that will work your whole body and all of its systems. You will need to train in endurance, strength and cardiovascular systems. All of your muscles need to be worked on if you really want to make your body healthy. Concentrating on just a few areas will only ?beef up? those same areas which will make you feel bigger than you felt before you started working out.
Seek help from a personal trainer. By now you are probably flirting with the idea of joining a gym or might have even already joined one. Your gym probably has a personal trainer on hand to help you put together and perfect a workout routine that you can use to increase your fitness. Your personal trainer will teach you how to use the machines and gym equipment, tell you which fitness classes you should take and help you decide just how much time you should be spending working out each day. Perhaps most importantly of all, a personal trainer will cheer you on when you need it. Putting together an exercise routine of your own can be scary. A great confidence booster is working with someone who is not only well versed in fitness but who is also very interested in seeing you succeed.
Use Wii Fit! Whether or not you want to believe it, this game is a godsend for people just starting out on the road to fitness. You can use this game to get in a full exercise routine right in your living room. It also teaches you some basic maneuvers so that, if you do decide to move to a public space to do your workout, you will have some knowledge under your belt. Working out in public is something that scares many people. Wii Fit helps you avoid this problem.
Getting in a full fitness routine has never been easier. Even if you don?t like the idea of Wii Fit there are plenty of other options available on the Wii system.
Fitness involves your whole life. There is more to fitness than going for a jog a few times a week. Fitness involves a healthy diet, healthy choices and a regular exercise routine. You have lots of options when it comes to finding success at fitness. Don?t forget that there is more to fitness than simply working out on a regular basis! Before you go, be sure to read our Bodylastics review.

Cash boost in bee parasite fight
Scientists are to try to turn a honey bee parasite's natural defences against itself in a bid to beat the pest.
University of Aberdeen researchers have won ?250,000 to study how to subvert the varroa mite's immune system.
The blood-sucking varroa mite is endemic in many honey bee colonies and saps the vitality of a hive if present in large numbers.
Novel ways to tackle varroa are needed because mites are becoming resistant to existing chemical treatments.
The cash will be used to extend a completed study that showed how to target specific genes used by the mite.
Potential targetsSo far, said Dr Alan Bowman of the University of Aberdeen who is leading the project, this "knock-down" approach has only been used to home in on non-lethal genes.
"The next step is to continue finding which are the best genes that will kill them quickly at very low doses and then we'll move on out to field trials in greenhouses," said Dr Bowman.
The knock-down technique attempts to trick part of the bug's immune system into thinking that one of its genes is a virus.
Typically the part of the immune system being subverted only tackles external threats in the form of a certain types of RNA-based viruses.
Continue reading the main story?Start Quote
End Quote Dr Alan Bowman University of AberdeenResistance to a single treatment can often develop quite quickly?
As active genes also use RNA, it should be possible to subvert this defence mechanism by making it think one of the genes keeping the mite living is actually an invader.
Varroa mites' genomes are being sequenced to discover which genes are being actively expressed and are potential targets.
Dr Bowman hoped to have identified likely genes by the autumn and to start small-scale trials in 2013.
Beekeepers are being asked to send in live varroa mites so the researchers have a stock of bugs on which to test candidate treatments.
Dr Bowman said it was unlikely that the research would produce a treatment that would completely rid hives of the pest.
"I do not think we are expecting any silver bullets and it's probably the wrong approach to look for them these days," he said. "It'll be another piece in the arsenal and at the moment it's a very small arsenal."
Max Watkins, technical director of Vita Europe, which is providing some of the research money, said finding treatments that kill mites but leave bees and the environment unharmed was very difficult.
"The challenge is heightened because the relatively short life cycle of the varroa mite means that resistance to a single treatment can often develop quite quickly," he said.
Honey bees, solitary bees and bumble bees play a hugely important role in pollinating crops, said Friends of the Earth as it kicked off its Bee Cause campaign.
The pressure group estimates that it would cost the UK about ?1.8bn a year to hand-pollinate crops if all bees died out.
It has called on David Cameron to back a national bee action plan that would limit urban expansion and pesticide use.

What triggers a mass extinction? Habitat loss and tropical cooling were once to blame
ScienceDaily (Apr. 10, 2012) ? The second-largest mass extinction in Earth's history coincided with a short but intense ice age during which enormous glaciers grew and sea levels dropped. Although it has long been agreed that the so-called Late Ordovician mass extinction -- which occurred about 450 million years ago -- was related to climate change, exactly how the climate change produced the extinction has not been known. Now, a team led by scientists at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) has created a framework for weighing the factors that might have led to mass extinction and has used that framework to determine that the majority of extinctions were caused by habitat loss due to falling sea levels and cooling of the tropical oceans.
The work -- performed by scientists at Caltech and the University of Wisconsin, Madison -- is described in a paper currently online in the early edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
The researchers combined information from two separate databases to overlay fossil occurrences on the sedimentary rock record of North America around the time of the extinction, an event that wiped out about 75 percent of marine species alive then. At that time, North America was an island continent geologists call Laurentia, located in the tropics.
Comparing the groups of species, or genera, that went extinct during the event with those that survived, the researchers were able to figure out the relative importance of several variables in dictating whether a genus went extinct during a 50-million-year interval around the mass extinction.
"What we did was essentially the same thing you'd do if confronted with a disease epidemic," says Seth Finnegan, postdoctoral scholar at Caltech and lead author of the study. "You ask who is affected and who is unaffected, and that can tell you a lot about what's causing the epidemic."
As it turns out, the strongest predictive factors of extinction on Laurentia were both the percentage of a genus's habitat that was lost when the sea level dropped and a genus's ability to tolerate broader ranges of temperatures. Groups that lost large portions of their habitat as ice sheets grew and sea levels fell, and those that had always been confined to warm tropical waters, were most likely to go extinct as a result of the rapid climate change.
"This is the first really attractive demonstration of how you can use multivariate approaches to try to understand extinctions, which reflect amazingly complex suites of processes," says Woodward Fischer, an assistant professor of geobiology at Caltech and principal investigator on the study. "As earth scientists, we love to debate different environmental and ecological factors in extinctions, but the truth is that all of these factors interact with one another in complicated ways, and you need a way of teasing these interactions apart. I'm sure this framework will be profitably applied to extinction events in other geologic intervals."
The analysis enabled the researchers to largely rule out a hypothesis, known as the record-bias hypothesis, which says that the extinction might be explained by a significant gap in the fossil record, also related to glaciation. After all, if sea levels fell and continents were no longer flooded, sedimentary rocks with fossils would not accumulate. Therefore, the last record of any species that went extinct during the gap would show up immediately before the gap, creating the appearance of a mass extinction.
Finnegan reasoned that this record-bias hypothesis would predict that the duration of a gap in the record should correlate with higher numbers of extinctions -- if a gap persisted longer, more groups should have gone extinct during that time, so it should appear that more species went extinct all at once than for shorter gaps. But in the case of the Late Ordovician, the researchers found that the duration of the gap did not matter, indicating that a mass extinction very likely did occur.
"We have found that the Late Ordovician mass extinction most likely represents a real pulse of extinction -- that many living things genuinely went extinct then," says Finnegan. "It's not that the record went bad and we just don't recover them after that."

AOC e2352Phz
If you've been waiting for 3D monitors to break the $300 barrier, your wait is over. The AOC e2352PHz ($299 list) is a 23-inch full HD (1,920-by-1,080) monitor that delivers 3D content to your desktop using passive Film-type Patterned Retarder (FPR) technology. You get two pairs of lightweight glasses in the box as well as TriDef's 3D software, which lets you convert 2D movies, photos, and games to 3D, but with mixed results. The monitor does a good job of displaying real 3D content and delivers good overall 2D image quality as well. However, the e2352PHz couldn't reproduce small fonts cleanly, and it suffers from a few annoying design flaws.
Design and Features
The e2352PHz uses a relatively thin cabinet that measures 0.75 inch at the top and juts out to
1 inch toward the bottom, where the ports and speakers reside. The 2-watt speaker system is adequate for low volume listening but bass response is lacking. The rear panel is matte black and the screen bezels are glossy black. A shiny silver AOC logo is affixed to the bottom bezel. The panel is perched atop an oval base and mounting arm that is a bit wobbly but not to the point of tipping over. The cabinet has forward and backward tilt maneuverability but cannot be swiveled, pivoted, or height adjusted. At the rear of the cabinet are HDMI, DVI, and VGA ports, as well as an audio input and a headphone jack. This model does not offer USB connectivity.
On the bottom edge of the lower bezel are five buttons, one of which is a power switch. The button labels are etched into the black bezel and are virtually impossible to see in a normally lit room without shining a light directly on them, and even then they are ridiculously small and difficult to identify. There's a button that lets you toggle between 2D and 3D viewing modes, a volume control button, a source select button, and a menu button. Pressing the menu button launches the OSD (on-screen display), which is arranged along the bottom of the screen.
Luminance settings include contrast, brightness, gamma, dynamic contrast ratio, and eco mode. Eco mode is typically called picture mode on most other monitors and includes standard, movie, sports, text, game, and internet presets. Movie mode works well for dark room viewing but standard mode offers the best all around picture. Sports mode, on the other hand, is over-saturated and much too bright for everyday use. If you're using an analog signal you can adjust clock, phase, sharpness, and screen position.
The "Color" screen offers four color temperature settings (warm, normal, cool, sRGB) and a user defined setting. The DCB (Dynamic Color Boost) settings can be used to enhance skin tones, greens, and blues. Or, you can set it to enhance the entire picture, but I found that reds and greens are way too saturated in this mode. There's an off timer that you can set to have the monitor shut itself down at a predetermined time, or you can use the included e-Saver utility to tell the monitor when to power down, go to sleep, or activate s a screen saver. If you'd rather tinker with picture adjustments from the comfort of your keyboard, the included i-Menu utility lets you do so and is much easier than trying to figure out which buttons to press.
3D Performance
As with the Acer HR274H ($599 list, 3.5 Stars), the AOC e2352PHz uses a passive 3D technology known as Film-type Patterned Retarder, or FPR. It uses lightweight, polarized glasses to create depth, unlike active shutter glasses, which are battery operated and heavier. The e2352PHz comes with two pairs of lightweight glasses so you and a friend can get your 3D on right out of the box. It also comes with TriDef's 3D conversion software, which lets you view your 2D photographs, movies, and games in a simulated 3D mode. I watched clips from several (2D) DVD movies and was not impressed; the 3D doesn't have the depth that you get with real 3D content (content designed to be watched in 3D) and isn't very convincing. The same goes for converting photos to 3D: depth was lacking, and sometimes the conversion can make things look freaky. For example, I converted a picture of my son and me sitting together on a couch. The software pretty much left my image alone but brought my son's head to the foreground while the rest of his body remained in the background, sort of like a funhouse mirror. Other pictures looked good in 3D when the correct objects are given depth, but its hit and miss as to how the software will convert your photos.
Watching real 3D content is a whole different story. I hooked the monitor up to a 3D Blu-ray player and ran my test disc, Disney's 3D Showcase. The picture was bright and colors remained true, and the 3D imagery was top notch. You don't get nearly as much crosstalk (a double image effect) with passive 3D as you do with active shutter, but there was still a trace of it here and there, particularly when looking at text. Even so, the picture looked awesome.
Gaming in 3D mode was also a pleasure; the TriDef software supports over 600 games, including Far Cry 2, which I loaded up for a few rounds of action. As was the case with the Acer HR274H, the game looked great in 3D; there was minimal crosstalk while sitting directly in front of the screen but it became more apparent when viewed from a side angle. The picture remained bright and colors were unaffected by the glasses.
Performance
The e2352PHz performed quite well for a budget-class monitor. Its dark and light grayscale performance, as measured by the DisplayMate 64-Step Grayscale test, was relatively good for a TN panel good, but it was unable to display deep, inky blacks, such as what you get from the BenQ XL2420T ($549 list, 4 stars). Additionally, there was a smidgeon of green tinting in the middle of the grayscale.
Color quality was good; reds, greens, and blues were robust and evenly saturated and skin tones were natural looking. Small text could have been cleaner though; it looked fine at 6 points but smaller fonts set to 5.3 points were a little muddy but were still legible. Viewing angle performance was decent for a TN panel but colors were a bit off when viewed from an angle.
The e2352PHz used 33-watts of power, which is high for an LED backlit display. That's almost as much as the Acer HR274H (35 watts), which uses a much larger panel. The Lenovo LS2421P Wide ($219.99 direct, 4 stars), on the other hand, used only 16 watts.
AOC covers the e2352PHz with a three-year parts and labors warranty. The panel is only covered for one year. AOC's EASE Program provides a brand new monitor, with absolutely no cost to the customer, if the monitor malfunctions within the first three months.
Conclusion
The AOC e2352PHz is a good choice for 3D enthusiasts on a budget. For less than $300 you get solid 2D and "true" 3D performance, two sets of glasses, and the ability to view your photos and DVDs in a simulated, albeit low-grade, 3D mode. Moreover, the glasses are much more comfortable than battery operated active shutter glasses and look like a regular pair of shades rather than something from a sci-fi movie. If you prefer a 3D monitor with a larger screen and a highly adjustable stand, the Asus VG278H ($699 list, 4 stars) is an excellent choice, but it's more than twice the price of the e2352PHz and it uses active shutter technology.

Polls in Indonesia's Aceh province test peace deal
BANDA ACEH, Indonesia (AP) ? Indonesians in the archipelago's westernmost province of Aceh voted for a new governor Monday, testing the strength of a peace deal signed by separatist rebels and the government after the 2004 tsunami.
Five candidates, including incumbent Irwandi Yusuf, were up for the top job. More than a dozen others ran for district chiefs and mayoral posts. Official results will be announced next week.
Aceh is the only region in the nation of 240 million ruled by Islamic law, sparking debate ahead of the poll as to how strictly it should be enforced. But on the forefront of most voters' minds was peace, stability and ways to ensure continued economic growth after the tsunami helped speed an end to a 30-year civil war.
"I don't care who wins," said Teuku Sayed Azhar, a farmer who lost his brother and dozens of friends and neighbors in the war that claimed more than 15,000 lives.
"As long as they make sure Aceh doesn't fall into that dark hole again.
"Nowadays I can go into my field anytime, day or night," he said. "That's what matters most ... that our lives can continue to improve. "
This is the second election in the province since a 9.0 magnitude quake triggered a tsunami that killed 230,000 people in a dozen nations ? three quarters of them in Aceh alone.
Saying they didn't want to add to people's suffering, both rebels and the army agreed to lay down their arms.
However, tensions have flared anew in recent months, mostly between past and former members of the Free Aceh Movement, or GAM, sometimes erupting in violence.
Yusuf, a former separatist who shocked the world by winning the governorship in 2006, is running as an independent.
His main challenger is Zaini Abdullah, backed by many former GAM members.
Each side has accused the other of intimidation.
"I will accept the result, whoever wins," said Yusuf. "As long as the election is free and fair ... that's how it should be in a democracy."
The election is being closely watched in part because Aceh's success in integrating former rebels into the political landscape is seen as a potential model for wartorn countries.
The province with more than 4 million people was also one of the biggest recipients of international aid, with billions of dollars arriving after the tsunami. Much more work still needs to be done to rebuild, however, and stability is key.
Eka Putra Herlambang, waiting with his wife to cast his ballot in the provincial capital of Banda Aceh, said what he wanted most was "peace and development."
Andiyan, a housewife, nodded. She would like to see Islamic law ? one of the concessions made by the government as part of the deal to end the fighting ? more strictly enforced.
"But yes," she said. "Most important is peace."

This Is How Badly iPhone Games Are Destroying Toys 'R' Us
Video game sales have tanked ever since kids have told their parents they prefer iPhones and iPads, according to Stephanie Clifford and Peter Lattman at the New York Times.
The company announced it was going public way back in May 2010, but the IPO was repeatedly delayed as management waited it out for a better time.
Now, there is concern that the time has passed. According to Cliiford and Lattman:
"A major challenge has been a sharp reversal in video game sales. Once an area of growth, thanks to Nintendo Wii and other consoles, they have fallen as children move to iPhone games and apps for iPads. Last year, about 8 percent of Toys ?R? Us?s business was in video game sales, down from 11 percent in 2009."
And this year is especially important for the company and CEO Jerry Storch:
?This is a very crucial year for Jerry Storch and Toys ?R? Us ? there have been expectations for them going public, and it hasn?t happened yet,? said Jim Silver, editor of TimetoPlayMag.com and an influential toy industry expert. ?They need to come back.?
During the 2011 holiday season, many shoppers opted to go to Amazon, which offers cheaper products, and Walmart, which offered layaway.
Last month, Moody's put a negative watch on the company's debt.

Berra Barden ? Swedish Political Cartoonist, Life-Long Socialist ...

Berra and Marilyn Barden - Turku-Marienheim Ferry, July, 1987
An email from old friend and companera, Marilyn Barden, this morning. Her husband, Berra Barden died in his sleep last night in a nursing home near their home in Varmo, Sweden. Berra was 88. A man with a gentle wit and sharp mind, he was a fine political cartoonist and life long socialist who has watched Sweden?s lurch to the right politically `the Americanization of Sweden? ?these past years with consternation. The Bardens and our family were a part of the same circle during our Helsinki years in the late 1980s. We visited their Varmo home outside Stockholm several times and have remained in touch with Marilyn and Berra all these years. Here is an extract from Marilyn?s email announcing Berra?s death. A daughter, Molly, preceded Berra in death.
?Berra, my husband since 51 years left us last night. After 2 weeks in hospital and a new pacemaker he was sent to an elder centre for sick people. He was therefore 10days and got more and more tired despite good care. He passed on in his sleep at 10.15 last night. He had his stroke 15 years ago and despite that has had a relatively good life. He was 88, older than any of his relatives and got to love and hug both children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. They and dogs were his real loves, aside from me. A huge golden retriever who worked as care dog at the centre jumped up in his bed and lay there with him for a long time. It is more and more common with dogs working in elder care centres. Jenny and family are on ski holiday in Northern Sweden but are coming home today to say goodbye to grandfather. Rebecca is here in Stockholm and after several years of misunderstandings Berra got to experience a loving daughter again. We will have memorial ceremonies in our home for friends and family in a couple of weeks. He will be cremated as he wished and the ashes will be spread in the beautiful memorial park in our Varmdo cemetery where Molly is buried.?
