Swiss Re selling its Admin Re business in the U.S. | www.Artemis ...

Reinsurer Swiss Re has announced that it is going to sell off its U.S. Admin Re? business for $600m in cash as it seeks to unlock capital that is tied up in it. Total cash proceeds from the sale will be $900m after a pre-closing dividend. Admin Re provides risk and capital management solutions by which Swiss Re assumes closed books of in-force life and health insurance business, entire lines of business, or the entire capital stock of life insurance companies.

The deal see?s Swiss Re sell their Admin Re holding company, Reassure America Life Insurance Company (REALIC), to Jackson National Life Insurance who interestingly are owned by longevity risk transfer stalwart Prudential. The deal is expected to close in the second half of the year and remains subject to regulatory approval. Swiss Re says that it will retain certain books of business.

Swiss Re Executive Committee Member and Chairman of Admin?Re David?Blumer said; ?After conducting a thorough review of the Admin Re portfolio and evaluating the level of capital allocated to the Admin?Re US business, we concluded that we should redeploy the capital in other parts of our business.?

Swiss Re Group Chief Executive Michel M. Li?s says: ?We consistently said the Group?s 2011-2015 financial targets are our top priority. Redeploying the funds freed up through this transaction within the Swiss Re Group will have a beneficial impact on all three of our financial targets in the future, that is to say return on equity, earnings per share and economic net worth growth.?

Swiss Re intend to continue their Admin Re business in the UK and continental Europe where it says they see more opportunity, attractive growth potential, more active insurance deal-flow and higher profit potential.

?Swiss Re is committed to being a recognised force in the closed life book business through the Admin Re Business Unit. By executing transactions in select markets that meet our strict hurdle rates, Admin?Re can continue to extend its global market presence, while further strengthening its class-leading asset and capital management disciplines,? said Michel?M.?Li?s.

Europe is definitely where the opportunity is for taking on large books of life and health business right now. It will be interesting to see whether a renewed focus on Admin Re business in Europe could lead to Swiss Re turning to the capital markets for risk transfer again as the Admin Re business model involves them assuming significant life insurance, longevity and mortality risks which could be offloaded via insurance-linked securities.

China Sets Outsourcing Sights High ? BPO News & Trends

Traditionally a provider of cost arbitrage in its outsourcing services, during the last five years China has begun shifting its focus beyond simply offering lower labor and operational expenses. ?China is looking to become a value-add player,? said John Peng, EVP of Chinese information technology outsourcing (ITO) provider iSoftStone, during a session, ?Sourcing IT Services Globally: What China Has To Offer,? at the recent MIT CIO Symposium in Cambridge, MA.

BPO on Path to Higher-End Services
According to Peng, BPO business taken on by China will develop into higher-end areas such as HR, direct material procurement, financial and accounting planning, risk management, and customer/sales management. ?China is transitioning its (BPO) market to services,? he stated. ?All major global companies now have a center or third party delivery center in China.?

In addition, Peng said the Chinese ITO market is evolving to move beyond software development to include higher-end areas such as system integration, database management, IS management, content management and IT advisory. Peng added that ITO and BPO development often occur hand-in-hand.

?Outsourcing projects often enter China as ITO, and then we get good leads to BPO,? he said.

China?s Outsourcing Advantages
Both Peng and Karl Pessinis, SVP of iSoftStone, stressed that China offers many advantages as a destination for outsourcing either business processes and/or IT. ?A large amount of college graduates are underutilized,? said Peng. ?Six million graduate a year, and more than half of them are engineering graduates.?

Pessinis said companies in many industries are looking to expand their outsourcing operations from the mature Indian market and diversify their risk by outsourcing some functions to emerging markets, including China as well Brazil, Russia and the Philippines. In addition, he said Chinese outsourcing is in a position for ?pretty significant? growth as its rapidly expanding middle class increasingly seeks access to retail, automotive, manufacturing, and financial products and services, and global companies seek to establish a local presence.

Furthermore, Pessinis said with its 12-hour time zone difference from the US (China operates on a single time zone), China is an ideal part of a ?follow the sun strategy,? and commonly spoken languages include German, Russian and Japanese as well as various dialects of Chinese.

Ensuring Success
Pessinis stressed that companies outsourcing business processes and/or IT to China need to fully develop a strategy and conduct due diligence before launching any kind of program. ?Know why you want to use China,? he advised.

Pessinis presented a comparison of China, India and the Philippines as outsourcing destinations based on data collected by TPI. China has a cost structure roughly equivalent to the Philippines and 10-20% higher than India, but comes out ahead of the other two leading global outsourcing destinations in areas including regulatory risk, political stability, and inflation. TPI data shows the area where China poses the biggest comparative risk is in data security.

To help minimize data security issues, Pessinis urged companies outsourcing to China to ?pick the right partner,? emphasizing global companies with stock exchanges as the safest choices. Of course, Chinese outsourcing providers also have their own priorities when it comes to selecting foreign business partners.

?Initially, Chinese companies worked with leaders,? said Pessinis. ?Now they pick based on long-term vs. short-term relationships coming from the project.?

How to Make the Most of a Caravan Holiday

Caravan holidays are unique in the way that they provide the best of all holiday worlds. You have a comfortable base from which to stage days out and explore the region, you have the freedom to eat what you want, when you want with no hotel or B&B schedules to adhere to and you often have all the electrical comforts of home to keep the kids occupied during down times or bad weather.

If you`ve never tried a caravan holiday, you`re in for a treat.

Modern Luxury

Those who are new to caravanning are often surprised at the high quality of furnishings and fittings. People often comment, on returning home, that the caravan was better equipped and more luxurious than their own home.

Static caravans on commercial sites are particularly high quality; although so too are modern, privately owned trailer caravans.

A modern static caravan is well-designed to make the most of the limited space available. Though they can be large, with multiple bedrooms, they`re still likely to be smaller than the average house. Still, you`ll find comfortable sitting rooms with sumptuously upholstered seating, fitted kitchen areas with all the modern conveniences you`d expect in a contemporary kitchen, along with a dining area. Depending on the size and style of caravan, the furniture may be fitted or moveable. Either way, you`ll find it`s perfectly suited for its purpose.

Hot and cold running water and flushing toilets are, of course, standard, as are fitted wardrobes in bedrooms. You`ll find ingenious storage solutions packed into every conceivable nook and cranny so there`s not a single wasted inch.

Holiday Preparation

Whether you`re taking a caravan holiday at home or abroad will dictate how much luggage you can carry, but if you`re holidaying in your home country and driving to your location, you can truly make your home from home.

Your caravan will likely have a TV, but check to make sure. If you`re taking children, take along the games console and a selection of games to keep them occupied on rainy days or those times when you`re not around to entertain them.

Make your holiday into a bonding family time by taking board games or decks of cards and use them. Even though you`ll have familiar electronic entertainment, just being on holiday in different surroundings often means you`re willing to try things you wouldn`t normally try at home. Sitting round the table, playing cards or a board game draws the family together, sharing laughs and jokes. It`s an experience that can have benefits that last beyond the duration of the break.

Take food. Pack enough basic food to last at least for the first day. Being able to put the kettle on and have a snack as soon as you arrive helps you settle in, explore your caravan, unpack and unwind after the journey. Don`t add pressure by creating a need to go food shopping as soon as you arrive. Your caravan may be well-equipped, but that doesn`t extend to food.

Set Boundaries for Kids

Caravan sites can be hugely exciting places for children. Many have on-site entertainment facilities like bars, restaurants and swimming pools, or games areas such as mini-golf or bike hire and adventure swing-parks or climbing frames.

Setting boundaries for children, especially younger children, lets them know where they can and cannot go. Make it plain they`re not to go to the pool alone, or enter bars and restaurants without your permission. Naturally they`ll want to explore and possibly make friends with other children staying on the campsite, so make sure they know where to go and what to do if they lose their bearings during the early days on the site. Kids, however, are natural explorers and within a couple of days will know their way around better than you.

If you can carry bikes along and the site allows it, then do so. Biking around a site is faster and more fun for kids and a ready ice-breaker to help them make new friends.

Get Set to Explore

You`ll sleep well in your comfortable caravan bed, leaving you refreshed and relaxed each day, ready for exploration trips in the surrounding area. If you`ve chosen a beach location, alternate the days on the beach with trips further afield into nearby towns.

The reception area of the caravan site will have plenty of brochures detailing what`s on hand nearby. From attractions for kids to local history, art and museums there will be a wealth of entertainment right on your doorstep. Planning the next day`s excursion as you sit comfortably in your own dining area is one of the joys of caravanning.

Let everyone have their say and alternate who gets to choose what to do and where to go. This is especially important with children. Let them have a say and allow them their choice even if it`s not your idea of ideal entertainment. Remember, it`s their holiday too.

Make it plain to all the family members that give and take means sharing. You`ll be living in quite close quarters for the duration of your holiday, so setting a few ground rules, preferable before you even leave home, can ease tensions and improve harmony.

Domestic Duties

Self-catering holidays involve the normal household tasks. Caravan living is charming, snug and comfortable and even more so when it`s kept spic-and-span during your stay.

One way of sharing the chores is to have a family rota. Take it in turns to share cooking, washing up, sweeping or hoovering. Leaving it all to one family member is unfair can lead to arguments.

If it helps, write a rota on paper and pin it up in the kitchen. Everyone then knows what their job for the day is and can get on with it without prompting, which is another thing that can lead to arguments.

This morning, we have driven the four-wheel-drive truck up the 35 miles and 5,000 feet of elevation from Hilo to the turn onto a gravel road that will take us back to the study area. We pass through the gate, enter the Upper Waiakea Forest Reserve, and begin to pick our way across a road bulldozed across the lava. Sitting in the truck as it rumbles and creaks over this road, you are in a constant state of motion, jostling against the person sitting next to you, the truck door and, if you are not wearing your seat belt, the roof. To the farthest kipuka, it is about 30 minutes on this lava road. From there, it is a 45-minute hike across boot-shredding lava to the most distant kipuka.

In bird research, you don?t lift anything heavier than a pair of binoculars. Here, the hardest days are when we move the mist-net poles, nets, sledgehammer, and the bird banding kit to the most distant kipuka. Mist nets are fine nets that were invented in Japan in the 1600s and made of silk to catch small birds for food; they?re now made of nylon, adapted by 20th-century researchers as a way to humanely capture birds for measurement and marking. After banding for two days in one of the 34 kipuka involved in our studies, the poles, nets, sledgehammer and banding equipment are hiked across the lava to set up in another kipuka.

Our poles are made of galvanized electrical conduit pipe, and because most Hawaiian forest birds spend their time in the tall forest canopy, we use double- or even triple-high mist nets to reach 25 feet up. Once in the kipuka, we search for a natural net lane in the forest. Two people work to thread the net over the poles, and raise and steady the poles with guy ropes. A rope and pulley system is used to raise the net, and to lower it when a bird is caught.

To date, we have banded about 1,500 birds over two breeding seasons, each released with a unique combination of colored bands so it can be identified when it is sighted again. From this information, we can estimate annual survival and adult and juvenile dispersal.

?I knew I had to play big shots and I tried,? said Salas of his straight-set loss to Brogan. ?But he just hit everything back.?

Brogan will play third-seeded Matt Gilman of Cape Elizabeth in one boys semifinal Monday, with the other semifinal matching top-seeded Patrick Ordway ? the defending champion ? against No. 5 Jordan Friedland of Lincoln Academy in Newcastle.

Monday?s girls semifinals will include three players from Falmouth High School and top-seeded Maisie Silverman, a sophomore from Brunswick who reached last year?s final. Silverman will face fifth-seeded freshman Olivia Leavitt in one matchup, while No. 2 Annie Criscione will play No. 3 Analise Kump in a clash of Falmouth seniors.

Longtime tournament official Don Atkinson couldn?t remember the last time an unseeded player defeated two seeds to reach the quarterfinals, but Salas found himself in that position after upending No. 7 Jordan Doutreluigne of Oceanside of Rockland-Thomaston 6-4, 6-2 in the Round of 32 late Friday and No. 10 Jesse Butler of Deering of Portland 6-3, 6-1 in his Round of 16 match earlier Saturday.

Salas and Doutreluigne, an exchange student from Belgium, were familiar opponents, having met last fall at the Midcoast Recreation Center in Rockport.

?Whenever we played at MRC we always had really close matches, so I kind of knew what I needed to do,? said Salas. ?I needed to stay consistent, and I played well and he played well.?

Salas had similar success with Butler, a player he had lost to in a match last summer. After a relatively tight first set, Salas ? normally a baseline player ? became more aggressive as the match progressed.

?Mostly I just stayed consistent, tried to keep it deep and waited for a short ball to come in,? said Salas. ?I started to come in more in the second set.?

Salas, who plays third singles for Waynflete, which has won the last four Class B boys state team championships, was no match for Brogan, a sophomore who took Ordway to three sets in last year?s final before falling 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Brogan, who has lost just two games in his three tournament matches to date this year, swept to a 6-0, 6-0 victory that left Salas disappointed for the moment but ultimately not so low about his effort in reaching the quarters as a first-year high school player.

?I had a good tournament,? he said.

As expected, Ordway had little difficulty Saturday, as the junior dispatched No. 9 Satchel McCarthy of Cape Elizabeth 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals after a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Jai Aslam of Messalonskee of Oakland.

In Seychelles, when you go fishing, you catch fish, and this the South African fishermen just love,? the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture said.

Earlier the same day, the Seychelles Minister St.Ange had met with the South African Minister responsible for Tourism, Mr. Marthinus Van Schalkwyk. The two Ministers discussed cooperation between their two countries and the coming Routes Africa conference due to be held in Seychelles in July. Minister Van Schalkwyk is one of the ministers from Africa who has been invited to address Routes AFrica alongside the Seychelles Minister responsible for Internal Affairs&Transport, the Zimbabwe Minister for Tourism, the President of La Reunion, and the CEO of Ethiopian Airlines among other industry leaders and professionals.

The South Africa TV and written press are also expected to be traveling to Seychelles to cover Routes Africa 2012 and the presentation by their Minister Marthinus Van Schalkwyk.

?The visit by the South African Minister to Seychelles will be an opportunity to consolidate the friendly ties that exist between Seychelles and South Africa. This will be the first visit by Minister Marthinus Van Schalkwyk, and we remain convinced that he will leave our shores as an Ambassador for our islands,? the Seychelles Minister told the press in Durban, South Africa.

You MUST get back to basics: 4 minute showers ? no steam NO SHIT!!! No face cloths, lufas, rags, netty-things, sponges, buff-puffs, etc. NONE for LIFE!!!! The look of disbelief I get in my practice when i tell these things is always entertaining?. Wash gently with HIBICLENS gentle hands ONLY!!!!. Use a combination of a corticosteroid CREAM or ointment like triamcinolone .1% and Mupirocin 2% Ointment (both Rxs) on the inflamed areas. Cut out any foods you KNOW to cause problems ? in some it is wheat.. whey? milk? Avoid (that means NO!!!) lotions?.. for now?

Seal in the rest of the dry skin areas with small amounts of Aquafor while you are still damp after the shower. TRY TRY TRY to STOP rubbing , scratching.. picking!!!!!!!! Work at it!!! it IS work!!! Talk to yourself! The habits will eventually also be removed from your half-sleep.
