Coffee is more than just a stimulant, it's a way of life | Pipe Dream

When I drink coffee I feel like Popeye eating spinach: alive, empowered, emboldened and ablaze. (Be my Olive Oyl, won?t you?)

My morning ritual involves two cups on average. I wouldn?t conceive of making it to class (and/or staying awake) before having at least a large one to start the day. I need my caffeine fix because, well, how else could I get anything done?

I?ve been told that my caffeine intake is high. And it?s true, I?ve developed a self-diagnosed intolerance to lactose, my stomach making it clear that more than three cups of coffee isn?t what it wants. Are the wholesome pages of Pipe Dream too pure for me to insinuate the free-falling, deleterious effects of a caffeine dependency coupled with all that healthy, agreeable Sodexo food? Let?s just say it?s a slippery slope.

Before we go down that path though, let?s not be dramatic. Surely the sensations drinking coffee engenders are somewhat psychosomatic and not strictly chemical. Sure, caffeine induces some stimulation and alertness. But the feelings of confidence, attentiveness and even restlessness which I and many of you associate with coffee dramatically exceed its chemical effects.

It seems that at least part of the draw and effect of drinking coffee as habitually and excessively as I do is psychological. Coffee is like any other commodity in our culture, then, in the sense that we attach certain feelings and ideologies to it which are not necessarily contained in the drink itself. In this case, the feelings of energy, edginess and dependency are simply exaggerated reports of authentic chemical reactions.

There is also the image factor. Marx was the first to talk about commodity fetishism, wherein we transplant subjective emotions, relationships and statuses onto objective objects. Just as an iPod is more than an MP3 player ? it represents individuality and personalization, too ? carrying a cup of coffee earns you an aura of ambition and intelligence.

These two factors ? the inflated expectations along with the superficial image ? may very well be at the heart of my attraction to coffee. Yet this awareness prompts a perplexing question: How come it still works after the fact?

What we are saying is that at least part of the draw to caffeine is psychological. Sure, the chemicals are still all there. But the intense feelings of dependency we attach to coffee are seemingly the results of a self-deceptive placebo effect, right? Why am I still drawn to the warm, milky beverage when I know that at least part of the promise it holds is made up?

We?ve all construed and upheld the myth that coffee will help you get what you need to do done. Psychologically, I can hardly get started on that looming term paper without a cup of coffee at my side. I know drinking coffee won?t make me any smarter, but I?m still not really sure if my computer or thermos is more indispensable for me to achieve any writing.

I suppose it?s comparable to Hemingway?s relationship with alcohol, Burroughs?s heroin habit or Rand?s dependency on amphetamines (not that I include myself in that list of greats). Point being, as writers and artists, we attach our creative juices to particular substances. In those cases, the substances had addictive features far greater than caffeine. But the initial association between productivity and some external substance is the heart of the matter. It functions like a crutch. It?s sort of like saying, ?Once I?ve got a warm cup then the paper will be doable.?

Sure, we?re limiting ourselves by thinking that we can?t accomplish whatever we?ve got on the plate before then. But if all it takes for me to study another hour to come up with a thesis or memorize these 25 index cards is another $2 off the meal plan and a little jitteriness, why not?

Gunman sentenced to life in Giffords case

The gunman who killed six people and tried to assassinated U.S. congresswoman Gabby Giffords showed no emotion in court as a judge sentenced him to life in prison. NBC's Miguel Almaguer reports.

By NBC News staff and wire reports

TUCSON, Ariz. -- The man who pleaded guilty to a deadly Arizona shooting rampage that wounded former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords has been sentenced to life in prison.

Ross D. Franklin / AP

Former Democratic Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, left, and her husband, Mark Kelly, leave U.S. District Court in Tucson, Ariz., on Thursday, Nov. 8, after the sentencing of Jared Loughner.

U.S. District Judge Larry Burns sentenced 24-year-old Jared Lee Loughner on Thursday for the January 2011 attack that left six people dead and Giffords and others wounded.

Loughner pleaded guilty to federal charges under an agreement that guarantees he will spend the rest of his life in prison without the possibility of parole. He received seven life terms, one for each death and one for the attempt on Giffords' life, plus 140 years.

Giffords hugged her husband, retired astronaut Mark Kelly, after the sentencing was handed down.

Loughner showed little response to the sentence.

The hearing marked the first time victims -- including Giffords -- could confront Loughner in court. Her husband spoke on her behalf, saying Loughner changed his wife's life forever but couldn't dent her spirit.

At the courtroom podium,?Giffords held?Kelly?s hand silently and stared directly at Loughner as?Kelly addressed him in a stern tone, NBC News reported.

"That bright and chilly morning you killed six innocent people," Kelly said. "Gabby would trade her own life to save any of those you savagely murdered that day."

Kelly then named the six victims and talked a little about each. Afterward he said:

"Then there's Gabby... Now she struggles to deliver each and every sentence ... ?Gabby struggles to walk. Her right arm is paralyzed. She is partially blind."

"Mr. Loughner, by making death and producing tragedy ... you tried to extinguish life ... But know this and remember always -- you failed. You may have put a bullet through her head, but you haven't put a dent in her spirit and commitment ... " ...

"You have decades upon decades to contemplate what you did. But after today. After this moment. Here and now. Gabby and I are done thinking about you.

Kelly also?lambasted elected officials for their positions on gun control, naming Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer?as one of many "feckless" state elected?leaders who?"look at gun violence, not as a problem to solve, but as the white elephant in the room to ignore."

Brewer spokesman Matthew Benson declined comment on the criticism leveled against the governor.?

"This is a day of justice and peace," he said.

Read Mark Kelly's complete?testimony as prepared for delivery?

Loughner, asked at the outset of the hearing by?Burns if he had chosen to waive his right to make a statement, answered in a low voice, "That's true."

He was otherwise silent as he sat next to his lawyer, Judy Clarke.

Clarke put her hand on Loughner's arm after Kelly spoke, a contrast to?last year when the defendant spat on his lawyer from his jail cell, NBC News reported.

Other survivors also addressed Loughner.

"You forgot to shoot yourself," Mavanell Stoddard, whose husband died shielding her from bullets, told Loughner, according to a reporter from The Arizona Republic.

Suzi Hileman, who was shot three times while trying to save her 9-year-old neighbor, told Loughner she would think of him as dead. "You turned a civics lesson into a nightmare."

The 24-year-old Loughner pleaded guilty three months ago to 19 federal charges under a plea?agreement.

Both sides reached the deal after a judge declared that Loughner was able to understand the charges against him. After the shooting, he was diagnosed with schizophrenia and underwent forcible psychotropic drug treatments.

Some victims, including Giffords, welcomed the deal as a way to move on. It spared victims and their families from having to go through a potentially lengthy and traumatic trial and locks up the defendant for life.

Christina Pietz, the court-appointed psychologist who treated Loughner, had warned that although Loughner was competent to plead guilty, he remained severely mentally ill and his condition could deteriorate under the stress of a trial.

When Loughner first arrived at a Missouri prison facility for treatment, he was convinced Giffords was dead, even though he was shown a video of the shooting. He eventually realized she was alive after he was forcibly medicated.

'Home for good': Giffords, husband move back to Tucson

It's unknown whether Pima County prosecutors, who have discretion on whether to seek the death penalty against Loughner, will file state charges against him. Stephanie Coronado, a spokeswoman for Pima County Attorney Barbara LaWall, said Wednesday that no decision had been made.

It's also unclear where Loughner will be sent to serve his federal sentence. He could return to a prison medical facility like the one in Springfield, Mo., where he's been treated for more than a year. Or he could end up in a prison such as the federal lockup in Florence, Colo., that houses some of the country's most notorious criminals, including Oklahoma City bombing conspirator Terry Nichols and "Unabomber" Ted Kaczynski.

The exact placement will depend on the nature of his mental illness and its treatment.

Next weekend, the ?Showdown In Chinatown? film challenge and competition celebrates seven years of underground filmmaking with its annual Championship Challenge event. You can enter, if so inclined ? but you might just want to stop by for a laugh.

Film and slam poetry challenge

Where: Nextdoor, 43 N. Hotel St.
When: 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17
Cost: $10
Info: showdowninchinatown.com

I mean that literally. ?SIC? is asking for comedy from its filmmakers this time around.

And on top of that, the challenge has been expanded to include poets ? slam poets, that is.

Most contests during the year give filmmakers a week to put together a short (seven minutes or less), using a required prop and phrase. This annual challenge has a longer timeframe ? the challenge went out in October, to allow filmmakers to stretch out and raise their ambitions ? but if you?re game, you still have time to shoot and score. Films are due Friday, Nov. 16; drop them off between 5 and 7 p.m. at thirtyninehotel, 39 N. Hotel St.

?We wanted to see how filmmakers responded to comedy,? said organizer Cyrina Hadad. ?Part of it is that comedy is not easy to do. It?s easier to make someone cry than to make them laugh.?

Here?s what?s required: a package and a teapot as props; the line of dialogue, ?That?s one way to do it?; and a sense of humor. The event will take place, as usual, at Nextdoor, 43 N. Hotel St. in Chinatown.

?We want to see how much they can do,? Hadad said. ?Ideally, we want them to take (the shorts) to film festivals. ? storyboard it. The whole point is to refine the craft ? challenge yourself to do something you wouldn?t normally.?

Expect to see (or offer) different kinds of comedy, from slapstick to black humor.

?I personally like comedy noir,? Hadad said. ?I?m really curious to see how Hawaii makes a comedy.

It?s the last SIC event of the year.

?So if anyone wants to make a film and show it, now is the time,? said Hadad.

The ?SIC Poetry Challenge? is brand new and adds some creative layering to the event, with live spoken word between short film screenings. (Poets also need to use the line of dialogue, and bring the laughs.)

After the films are screened, around 10 p.m., charismatic slam poetry champ Bridget Gray will host an open mic at thirtyninehotel, which also hosts bangout dance night ?Soul Clap!? that night. (I?ve got more thirtyninehotel news for you below.)

?This is a call for ALL writers, performance poets, lyricists, slammers, MCs, etc. to participate in the Showdown fun!? said Hadad. Poets can sign up at Nextdoor starting at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17.

(Note: Your admission to ?Showdown in Chinatown? gets you into the open mic and ?Soul Clap!? at no additional charge.?

Next year, ?Showdown in Chinatown? is going to be making some changes, Hadad revealed, with fewer challenges ? just five a year ? and more events along the lines of this year-end shabang, getting creatives such as poets, musicians and screenwriters involved.

?Hopefully, this will build a stronger community,? she said.

Ryan Richardson and Hadad put together their first promo video for ?Showdown in Chinatown? this time around. Check it out.

CLUB PICK: Saturday, Nov. 10, promises to be special at thirtyninehotel. Check out U.K. DJ Gerry Rooney, endorsed by England?s DJ guide residentadvisor.net for his ?deep, sexy, funky, sleazy and always a little ironic record selections. ? Afro, Dub, Disco, Funky Rock, Latin, House, he has it all pretty much, and then some.? Gerry Rooney and partner in musical crime DJ Harvey on a previous Hawaii visit. (Courtesy Sarcastic Disco)

Rooney?s partner in left-field, ?90s conoisseur label Black Cock Records, thirtyninehotel fundamental and internationally respected DJ Harvey, also of the U.K. but now as likely to turn up at L.A. massives or selective New York events, praises Rooney for ?access to unbelievably incredibly great music.?

In a recent Australian interview, Harvey reminisced about crate-digging adventures at long-neglected, rat-filled warehouses and abandoned storage units ? this is a heritage he shares with Rooney. In another music mag interview from 2005, Harvey said, ?Gerry and I could play records to each other for weeks and still not get through ?em all.?

I?m sure the collection has only grown since then, but what?s really important is that in Rooney?s hands, the music matters. What you?ll hear won?t be trendy, and it?s not all about the bpm ? it?s about going for an aural ride. You can hear some selective cuts from this obsessive audiophile by turning up at the club tonight.

Tomorrow?s party marks eight years in business for thirtyninehotel. The artspace and club, created out of a passion for art and music, has come a long way, building on its handbuilt origins. This year, thirtyninehotel?s kitchen, manned by Cody Pierce, was my Critic?s Pick for an Ilima Award. Stop by and congratulate founder Gelareh Khoie, master mixologist Christian Self (this bar is also one of my top picks, hands down), Pierce and the rest of this awesome crew starting at 9 p.m. Cover is $15.

Kodak did not mislead investors before bankruptcy: court

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Eastman Kodak Co executives did not mislead investors about the photography pioneer's deteriorating financial health in the year prior to its bankruptcy, a Manhattan federal judge ruled.

U.S. District Judge Harold Baer on Thursday dismissed a shareholder lawsuit against Chief Executive Antonio Perez and three former Kodak executives. The Rochester, New York-based company was not a defendant because it is in Chapter 11.

Shareholders led by Bret Jones, who claimed to have lost $720,384 by investing in Kodak stock, accused the company of making false and misleading statements that suggested optimism it would become profitable, maintain sufficient liquidity, and sell a digital patent portfolio once thought to be worth as much as $3 billion.

The shareholders also said that in the four months leading up to Kodak's January 19, 2012 bankruptcy filing, the company misled investors about its intention to seek protection from creditors.

Baer concluded, however, that there was no showing that the executives intended to defraud anyone, and indeed they had used their "best efforts" to successfully transform the company.

The judge said there are "serious policy reasons" not to force nearly-insolvent companies to disclose their plans too soon. "No multi-billion dollar company would file for bankruptcy without first engaging in internal deliberations," he said.

Baer added that many of the alleged fraudulent statements, including Perez's expression of confidence on February 3, 2011 that Kodak would transform into a "sustainable, profitable company," were too general for reasonable investors to rely on.

Other defendants included former chief operating officer Philip Faraci; former chief financial officer Antoinette McCorvey; and Pradeep Jotwani, a former president of Kodak's consumer businesses.

The class period ran from January 26, 2011 to January 19, 2012, during which Kodak's share price fell to 30 cents from nearly $4. Kodak shares once traded above $94.

Aelish Baig, a partner at Robbins Geller Rudman & Dowd representing the investors, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Jonathan Dickey, a partner at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher representing the defendants, did not immediately respond to similar requests.

Kodak filed for bankruptcy after failing to keep up as consumers and rivals shifted to digital photography from film photography.

The company has shuttered its digital camera business, set plans to stop selling inkjet printers, and been exploring options to sell the digital patents after failing to win acceptable bids in an August auction. Kodak has said it hopes to emerge from Chapter 11 next year.

The case, whose named plaintiff is not the lead plaintiff, is Hutchinson et al v. Perez et al, U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York, No. 12-01073.

(AP) ? Stocks slid on Wall Street Thursday, a day after the Dow Jones industrial average logged its biggest one-day drop of the year, as investors fretted about the potential for gridlock in Washington.

The Dow was down 73 points to 12,859 as of 2:40 p.m. Eastern. The Standard and Poor's 500 index fell 11 points to 1,383 and the Nasdaq composite slipped 31 to 2,906.

The Dow plunged 313 points Wednesday, its fifth worst one-day drop following a U.S. presidential election. The biggest, in 2008, came in the midst of the financial crisis on the day after President Barack Obama won his first term.

The sell-off came the day after Obama was elected for a second four-year term as investors turned their focus back to Europe's problems and the so-called fiscal cliff, a package of tax increases and government spending cuts in the U.S. that will occur unless Congress acts by Jan. 1. Investors see it as a serious threat to the economic recovery.

"The thinking before the election was that it would remove some of the uncertainty, but it seems to have done the opposite," said Tyler Vernon, chief investment officer at Biltmore Capital Advisors in Princeton, N.J.

Stocks are still up on the year, but well below the peak they reached in September. That was when the Federal Reserve announced a third round of its bond-buying program, which is intended to hold down borrowing costs and encourage lending.

The S&P 500 is 5 percent below its high close of the year, 1,465, which it reached on Sept. 14. That was its highest level in nearly five years. It's still up 10 percent for the year.

Investors may be tempted to sell appreciated stock before a possible increase in the capital gains tax at the end of the year, Vernon said. Tax cuts enacted by President George W. Bush expire at the end of this year and the U.S. government wants to cut a $1 trillion budget deficit.

Investors were encouraged by two reports on the U.S. economy that came out before the market opened. The Dow climbed as much as 48 points in the morning but started to sink after the first hour of trading.

The Labor Department reported that the number of people seeking unemployment benefits fell 8,000 last week to 355,000, a possible sign that the job market is healing. Officials cautioned that the figures were distorted by Superstorm Sandy.

A separate report showed that the U.S. trade deficit narrowed to its lowest level in almost two years as exports rose to a record high.

There was also encouraging news from Europe, where leaders shocked markets a day earlier with a dire forecast for economic growth next year.

European Central Bank head Mario Draghi said financial market confidence "has visibly improved" as the 17-country group that uses the euro struggles with its debt crisis. But he said the outlook for the economy remains "weak." Draghi spoke after the bank's governing council left its key interest rate unchanged at 0.75 percent.

The European Commission, the executive arm of the European Union, on Wednesday slashed its outlook for growth for this year and 2013. The report helped set off a sharp decline in stocks in the U.S and Europe.

Spain's government said that it had met its financing needs for the year after raising the equivalent of $6.07 billion in a series of bond auctions on Thursday. Spain became the focal point of the European debt crisis earlier this year amid concern that it would struggle to refinance its debt at affordable rates.

Among stocks making big moves:

? Energy drink maker Monster Beverage sank 56 cents to $4.41 after the company said its revenue growth slowed in the third quarter.

? Dean Foods rose 55 cents to $16.63 after the company reported a third quarter profit of $36 million for the third quarter, compared with a $1.5 billion loss in the same period a year earlier.

? Burger chain Wendy's rose 17 cents to $4.43 after the company said that a key sales figure rose. Revenue at restaurants open at least 15 months rose 2.7 percent, the sixth straight quarter of growth.

? CBS rose 40 cents to $34.39 after the company said that earnings rose 16 percent as falling ad revenue was offset by higher fees from pay TV distributors.

(AP) ? Vice President Joe Biden is making an unannounced stop in Cleveland.

Biden voted Tuesday morning in his home state of Delaware and then boarded a plane for Chicago, where he's joining President Barack Obama to await the election returns.

An hour after takeoff, the small group of reporters traveling with the vice president alerted the rest of the news media that Biden had landed in the Ohio city just before noon.

The stop was described as long-scheduled but unannounced.

Republican candidates Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan also had scheduled Election Day stops in Cleveland at about the same time.

Ohio has become a central battleground in the presidential race.

Beneath the hype: What, actually, will China's party Congress do?

The Communist Party Congress most certainly will laud President Hu?s review of China's accomplishments over his past five years in office.

By Peter Ford,?Staff writer / November 6, 2012

A man walks past a wall engraved with the insignia of the Chinese Communist Party on Tuesday, Nov. 6, in Shanghai, China. The party will hold its 18th National Congress on Thursday, Nov. 8 in Beijing.

Amid all the hype surrounding Thursday?s opening of the ruling Communist Party?s 18th Congress, the headlines declaring it ?crucial? to China?s future and the crush of more than 1,000 foreign reporters accredited to cover the confab, it is sometimes hard to remember that the weeklong meeting is not actually going to decide anything.

The only question of interest to anyone outside the Great Hall of the People is who will emerge from the Congress at the top of the Communist Party. And that will have been decided in much smaller conclaves before the delegates take their seats.

The Congress ?is a show for mass consumption,? says Zheng Yongnian, head of the East Asia Institute at the National University of Singapore. ?But it matters because it is very symbolic, and the new leaders who have been selected have to go through the formal procedures.?

The 2,270 delegates will in fact elect only the 300 or so members and alternate members of the party?s Central Committee. It is they, meeting next week once the Congress is over, who will elect the two-dozen members of the decisionmaking Politburo, who in turn will name a handful of men ? either seven or nine, rumors vary ? to the Politburo Standing Committee at the summit of the pyramid.

?But 95 percent of the election results have been fixed before the Congress,? says Li Datong, a former editor of ?Freezing Point,? a Communist Party youth magazine. ?The Congress has meaning only as propaganda, showing off the achievements of the past 10 years? since outgoing party General Secretary Hu Jintao took the top job.

'Sailing the broad sea'

The slogans are indeed self-congratulatory. ?Welcome the successful 18th?Party Congress Marking Great Achievements? reads an electronic signboard splashing party propaganda across Tiananmen Square.

?Sailing the broad sea under a boundless sky? proclaimed a headline in Tuesday?s People?s Daily, the official party organ, above a dense page-long account of accomplishments such as the launching of space rockets, the planting of trees, record grain harvests, and the construction of high-speed railways.

ELECTION WATCH: Voting in darkness, author's tips

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Around the country on Election Day 2012 with AP reporters bringing the latest developments to you:

THE SCENE IN HOBOKEN

Standing in front of a pile of junked refrigerators, a flood-destroyed car and a curbside mountain of waterlogged debris in front of his Hoboken home on Tuesday morning, Anthony Morrone didn't even realize it was Election Day. Since immigrating to New Jersey in 1967, the 76-year-old retired mechanic had never missed a vote. Until today.

"No time, no time to vote, too much to do," Morrone said, rattling off a list of things he needed to do after Superstorm Sandy ravaged his home last week, including mucking out the first floor, ripping out drywall, scooping Hudson River debris out of his driveway in a home a good quarter mile from the river. "Too much going on," he added.

At Hoboken's city hall, an American flag was draped over the railing where a huge board covered with handwritten instructions on where to get ice, hot food or other types of assistance was flanked by a printed sign saying "vote here." A steady stream of voters were climbing the steps, despite the FEMA and National Guard trucks that still form a ring around the building a week after the storm.

TASTE OF DEMOCRACY

It's not at all scientific, but it is delicious: A Roseville, Minn., bakery is offering Obama and Romney cookies to test its customers' preference in the presidential race.

Roseville Bakery owner Amy Johnson says she's done her cookie poll in the past two elections, and it correctly predicted the winner both times.

It boosts cookie sales, too. Customer Muriel Sharpe read about the cookie poll online and when she heard Obama was behind, she drove in Tuesday morning and snatched up two dozen Obama cookies.

She passed some out to other customers. Then she bought eight more.

Despite her efforts, Romney still held an 830-to-731 lead over Obama in cookie sales.

Johnson says the political cookies have sparked some heated discussion between customers and gotten her young staff more engaged in what's going on.

VOTING IN THE DARK

On New York City's Staten Island, voters lined up outside dark tents to vote in areas still without power after Superstorm Sandy. In the Jersey Shore community of Little Egg Harbor Township, voters cast ballots in a mobile polling station dubbed the "vote-a-bago", just one week after Sandy devastated towns and cities along the state's coastline.

AUTHOR'S ADVICE: VOTE

Judy Blume has been writing for young readers for decades, and she posted an election-day message to them on Facebook.

"I'm voting because voting is a privilege and I've never missed an election since I turned 21 and got the right to cast my vote. (Yes, you had to be 21 to vote then)," the author writes. "It makes me crazy when I hear young people say elections have nothing to do with them. I've got news for you if you think this election has nothing to do with your life. It has everything to do with your life."

Blume says the issues most important to her this election are women's rights, the environment, health care, foreign relations and "to have a say in who will be appointed to the Supreme Court."

"I'm voting for the candidate I trust more," she says.

BURGERS VS. OMELETTES

France's version of the U.S. Election Day is playing out ... on the plate.

For 24 hours, the popular Breakfast in America diner in central Paris is offering two special additions to the menu: an Obama Burger and a Romney Omelette. The owner will count how many dishes are sold by the end of the day and the U.S. election winner, as decided by French palates, will be declared.

One problem: The Obama Burger is bursting with sausages and pickles, whereas the Romney Omelet is plain and simple ? almost guaranteed to sell less.

"This morning we had some customers from America who were very unhappy. They were Romney supporters and were offended," says diner owner Craig Carlson, a U.S. citizen from California.

"We tried to explain it's just a joke and we tried to put a little slant on it. (Romney) always says he is a regular American, a plain American."

AT STORM POLLS, EMOTION

For some in the storm recovery zone, voting today is an emotional event.

On Long Island, Sarah Brewster, 39, was shaken when she entered the East Elementary School in Long Beach to vote and noticed that the clocks were all stopped at 7:27 ? the time on Monday evening when everyone in the community lost power. She started crying when she emerged from the crowded school cafeteria, surrounded by more reminders of the hurricane ? the loud hum of generators to keep the school open and the portable toilets on the sidewalk.

"It's emotional. You go into the building here and you see the clocks stopped at 7:27 when we lost power. It's right there in the polling place, 7:27, when it all happened here, so..."

She trailed off. Tears streamed down her face as she spoke.

"Seeing the generators and all that but it's important to be here. We've just got to keep going forward and doing the best we can in the midst of the destruction."

"It's part of our civic responsibility in the midst of all this crisis."

VIEW FROM SOUTH KOREA

Two North Korean defectors working at a Seoul-based shortwave radio station that targets audiences in North Korea planned a special section on the U.S. election in their regular program Tuesday night.

In the recorded program, the defectors explained the U.S. election system and compared it with the North Korean system, where a sole parliamentary candidate will win with nearly 100 percent of the vote, according to station head Kim Seong Min.

"We also explained that in South Korea it's hard for one candidate to win more than 50 percent of votes cast, as there are diverse opinions. (In the U.S.), challengers often compete against an incumbent president, and we stressed that that's something that couldn't happen in North Korea," he said.

"We said that we hope this kind of election system will someday be possible in North Korea, and that there were revolutions in the Middle East to achieve this kind of system," Kim said.

Kim said many North Korean defectors have testified that they listened to the station's radio programs before leaving North Korea, though he doesn't know how many listen daily.

Later, reporters asked whether he had any prediction for the outcome. "Oh, I'm feeling pretty good," Biden said.

Concerns raised over fee-charging debt management plans - AOL ...

After some years of financial pressures, many consumers in the UK have been forced to seek help with mounting debts. But new research suggests many are paying unnecessary fees for help that is readily available for free.

Experts urge consumers to seek fee-free debt help

The survey, by the Money Advice Trust and Lloyds Banking Group, found that 50 per cent of cash-strapped Brits are handing over hundreds of pounds to private companies for the set-up of debt management plans, unaware that there is a fee-free option.

In general, those who had turned to a debt management plan with a private company were unclear as to what they had signed up for, particularly when it came to fees and charges, while one in 10 had even paid fees upfront.

Moreover, the poll suggested that plans set up by fee-charging companies were more likely to end in failure than those that were arranged for free.

The researchers argued that the failure rate of paid-for debt management plans pointed to poorer practices by private companies, and suggested upfront fees should be banned.

Joanna Elson, chief executive of the Money Advice Trust, urged consumers to seek free advice.

She told the Daily Express: "People deal with unmanageable debts in a variety of ways. When people take the brave step of confronting their financial difficulties, we owe it to them to ensure they stand the best possible chance of finding a fair and sustainable way back to financial health."

The National Debtline, Citizens Advice and the StepChange Debt Charity all provide free help.

Wii U's Miiverse, Chat, TVii, and eShop features will arrive in a day-one software update

Wii U's Miiverse, Chat, TVii, and eShop features will arrive in a dayone software update

Are you ready for Nintendo's Wii U console to arrive in a couple of weeks, packing not only a GamePad but also extensive online-enabled features like the Miiverse, Wii U Chat, TVii and eShop? Good, because as IGN mentions, the Wii U isn't. Not unlike many games shipping lately, the console will see a software update available at debut that downloads all of those features for the first time. That shouldn't be a problem for early adopting gamers as long as everything goes smoothly, but so far early-arriving review / preview units don't have the functionality, although it should be delivered in an update before the launch. It's been a few years since we had a new console launch (relive the PS3 fat, pre-RROD Xbox 360 and Wii here) and quickly-changing software is certainly the name of the game, we'll let you know as soon as we can how the Nintendo Network delivers.
