S.Africa's Massmart profit down as spending slows

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - Massmart, the South African unit of Wal-Mart Stores Inc reported a 21 percent drop in first-half profit, hit by costs related to its deal with the world's biggest retailer.

Massmart, the high volume, low margin retailer that sells everything from televisions to groceries, said diluted headline earnings per share totalled 321.7 cents in the six months to end-December compared with 407.3 cents a year earlier.

Headline EPS, the primary measure of profit in South African, exclude certain one-off items.

A South African court last year ordered Massmart to double a planned fund to develop local suppliers to 240 million rand to win regulatory approval for Wal-Mart's acquisition.

Wal-Mart paid $2.4 billion for 51 percent of Massmart.

Excluding that cost, the company said headline EPS would have shown single-digit growth, reflecting tight margins from an aggressive cut-price strategy to double market share in food sales.

"As consumer expenditure slowed, we saw increased discounting amongst most retailers and the inevitable fight to hold or gain market share," the company said.

Massmart said last week that first-half earnings would likely drop by as much as 25 percent.

Massmart, South Africa's third-largest retailer by value, is expanding into food retailing, pitting it against dominant grocers such as Shoprite and Pick n Pay.

The Johannesburg-based company aims to take its grocery market share to as much as 20 percent in the next few years from 10 percent now.

Massmart said sales increased 14.7 percent to 36.1 billion rand. It said sales for eight weeks to February 17, increased 11 percent.

"We are concerned that sales growth may be under some pressure for the remainder of the financial year," the company said.

Gettysburg College women hope home court leads to Centennial crown

The Gettysburg College women's basketball team will aim to make the most of its first experience as the top team in the conference when the Bullets host the Centennial Conference Championship Friday and Saturday in Bream Gym.

Gettysburg (19-6, 16-4 Centennial) earned the top seed in the conference for the first time in the 20-year history of the event.

"I think it's awesome, first of all, because it's the first time we've ever had the opportunity," head coach Mike Kirkpatrick said. "Secondly, we don't have to travel and the kids get to sleep in their own beds and have a normal routine. I think it's a great thing."

Gettysburg has not hosted a conference championship in nearly three decades. The last time the Bullets hosted a championship game was in 1985 when the team won the Middle Atlantic Conference Southern Division title. Gettysburg has hosted only one Centennial Conference playoff game, beating McDaniel 79-71 in the opening round of the 2008 postseason event.

The inexperience in postseason play at home is countered by the success inside Bream Gym this winter. The Bullets are 11-2 inside the friendly confines and have not lost since a 53-52 decision to Swarthmore on Dec. 8.

Gettysburg is suffocating its opponents on its own floor, holding teams to 28-percent shooting from the field and 46.6 points per game.

Gettysburg could claim to be the hottest team in the conference heading into the postseason. Since the beginning of 2013, the Bullets have

won 15 of 17 contests, falling only to Ursinus by two points and Johns Hopkins by seven. The team grabbed the top seed thanks to a defense that leads the Centennial Conference in scoring defense (48.1 points per game).

To Kirkpatrick, the key to winning the conference title will come down to more than just a solid defensive effort. Gettysburg was outrebounded in five of its six losses this season.

"I think the biggest thing for us is to rebound," said the coach. "If we're rebounding really well, I think we have a good shot, no matter who we play. If we're not rebounding that day, I think it's a toss-up and something else special needs to happen."

The Centennial Conference playoffs began with Johns Hopkins' 64-59 win over Haverford on Wednesday. Johns Hopkins will draw the Bullets in the first semifinal at 6 p.m. Friday. Muhlenberg and Swarthmore facing each other in the second game at 8 p.m. The championship game is set for 7 p.m. Saturday.

Jazz pianist Ahmad Jamal specifies Bose loudspeakers for London gig

The American jazz pianist-composer Ahmad Jamal has insisted on a full Bose RoomMatch system being installed especially for his sell-out concert at the Barbican Centre in London.

Ahmad Jamal concert at the Barbican

Considering his four piece ensemble ?an orchestra?, Jamal wanted a system that would deliver the most lifelike venue-filling sound to every member of the audience.

Audio design engineers worked alongside Ahmad Jamal?s production team to design a system specifically for the Barbican venue, with Bose RoomMatch arrays positioned to each side of the stage, and a central cardioid steered bass cluster in the centre.

Two ground stacked arrays consisting of modules and subs provided in-fill, and the whole system was powered with PowerMatch amplification.

The stage also featured on stage monitors ? one Bose L1 Model II with B2 bass for each of the four musicians.

Vegas shooting 'like something out of a movie'

LAS VEGAS (AP) ? Police say a deadly car-to-car shooting and fiery crash at a major Las Vegas Strip intersection started with an argument in the valet area of the Aria resort.

Sheriff Doug Gillespie made the disclosure Thursday about the early morning incident that left three people dead and at least six injured. Police withheld the names citing the ongoing investigation.

Police are seeking a black Range Rover Sport that fled the scene at Las Vegas Boulevard and Flamingo Road.

The intersection is home to famous casinos including Bellagio, Caesars Palace and Bally's.

Authorities say at least one person in the Range Rover shot at a Maserati that then ran a red light and crashed into a taxi.

The taxi burst into flames, and the driver and passenger died. The driver of the Maserati also died, and his passenger was shot.

Florida Basketball: Gators' Takeaway from Stunning Loss at Missouri

So much for balanced scoring and solid defense. That formula, which had propelled the University of Florida basketball team to the top of the SEC, fell woefully short Tuesday night as the Missouri Tigers exposed the Gators as a team with virtually no inside presence and an inability to finish.

The result was a crushing 3-point loss for the Gators, who led for most of the game until Missouri took their first lead with 2:47 remaining. The Gators, who only days ago appeared to have a lock on the SEC title, are now clinging to a 1 1/2 game lead over Alabama, with five conference games remaining before the SEC tournament.

The Gators (21-4,11-2), enter the final stretch of the regular SEC season with a myriad of concerns, not the least of which is an inconsistent, inside post game. Against Missouri, Florida center Patric Young was virtually invisible offensively, scoring only two points in four field-goal attempts in his 26 minutes on the court.

Never was the lack of an inside game more apparent than in the Gators' next-to-last possession, trailing by one point with 18 seconds remaining.

The Gators never threatened to go low, before senior guard Kenny Boynton launched an errant 3-pointer with seven seconds remaining. Missouri's Junior Cadougan grabbed the rebound and was fouled by Florida forward Erik Murphy. Cadougan sank two free-throws, sealing the victory for Missouri, which remained undefeated at home (15-0) and improved to 8-5 in the SEC (19-7 overall).

It was an impressive turnaround for Missouri, which lost to Florida by 31 points (52-83) earlier this season in Gainesville.

Biggest Challenge Facing Florida's Basketball Team

Biggest Challenge Facing Florida's Basketball Team

  • Lack of an inside game

  • Inability to finish

  • Lack of a go-to-shooter

  • Loss of Will Yeguete

  • Poor shooting from the foul line

The Gators' inability to finish was very reminiscent of its early season loss at Arizona, where the Gators blew an 11-point lead with 10 minutes remaining, before losing by one point, 65-64. The Gators actually led Arizona by 6 points with 56 seconds left in the game.

?

The Gators have blown similar leads in their back-to-back Elite 8 losses to Louisville and Butler during the last two NCAA tournaments.

In spite of a lineup that features balanced scoring, the Gators showed once again that?they lack a prolific scorer they can turn to with the game on the line.

Compounding the Gators' problems at Missouri was poor free-throw shooting. The Gators shot 50 percent from the free-throw line (6-12), including a stretch of five misses in a row during the second half.

Despite these obstacles, the Gators are still in the driver's seat for an SEC title and could secure a No. 2 seed at the NCAA tournament barring any additional setbacks.

But to do so, Gator coach Billy Donovan will have to find a way overcome a number of Achilles' heels, or the Gators could be headed for a disappointing finish. The possible return of injured forward Will Yeguete for the post-season could help, although forward Casey Prather has filled in admirably.

Florida's road to the Final Four has now detoured into the road to recovery. That journey begins Saturday night in Gainesville, when the Gators look to avenge their most lopsided loss of the season in a rematch with Arkansas. The Razorbacks defeated the Gators 80-69 on February 5 in Fayetteville.

Mark Nepo: Come With Me

I was on retreat, in deep silence and solitude, when I felt a moment of great aliveness and a sudden want to share that sense. It led to this poem, which I thought was a song for company. It was only upon reading it later that I realized that the voice of the poem was a call from my soul for me to spend more time with it.

Come With Me

I can't be more in love with life.
And still, your eyes crack me wider.
It's more than I can stand, if not for
the flower of all time slipping from
my mouth when all words fail. Come
with me to the ledge I've found within.
You can see the valley below where the
greatest minds have all been shattered
by love. I am so at peace on that ledge,
halfway between life and death. This
sweetness is like a nail of light that
pins me to the moment we have.
Come, please. I can't stand
all this wonder by myself.

A Question to Walk With: A month ago, we discussed the notion that everyone has their own genius, their own attendant spirit. What is your attendant spirit, your soul asking of you today?

Many in local law enforcement lean on their military training

Deputy Joel Lancaster, from the Alachua County Sheriff's Office.

Published: Sunday, February 17, 2013 at 5:09 p.m.
Last Modified: Sunday, February 17, 2013 at 5:09 p.m.

Joel Lancaster says he never felt comfortable in Iraq. The military base was confusing. It was hot and dusty. Mornings started at 4 a.m., long before first light dared to crack the skyline, with his squad scanning the streets for car bombs and detonation devices.

?Iraq always keeps you on edge,? said the 34-year-old deputy from the Alachua County Sheriff's Office. ?It's very stressful, so you have to find something to keep you going.?

He was in the small town of Q-West for about half a year. When he returned to the U.S. last spring, he received shipping orders again for Tuesday. He doesn't know where he'll be stationed yet.

But it didn't stop him. He enlisted at the police academy immediately and took a job with the Sheriff's Office in August 2012.

?I asked them if it would be a problem, me being in the military,? he said. ?They (ASO) just took me in with open arms.?

The deputy isn't alone. Locally, it's common for military members to also work at the Sheriff's Office or the police department between or after stretches of active duty.

Since 2008, nearly 60 ASO officers and deputies have been called upon for training or deployment, according to an office spreadsheet.

Lt. Todd Kelly said the majority of employees at the Sheriff's Office have military experience. It only makes sense, he said.

?They understand team concept, organization. They understand the importance of their role, and the structure is similar to things they've learned in the military,? he said.

At the Gainesville Police Department, four officers are currently activated, with another 12 who could be at any moment, spokesman Ben Tobias said.

?They still want to be able to serve their country,? he said. ?I think those are definitely officers we want protecting the citizens of Gainesville.?

For Lancaster, it's something in his blood. He feels hard-wired to help and protect people, he said. Gainesville or Iraq, service is his life.

Since first grade, he has wanted to be a police officer, he said.

He grew up in a run-down neighborhood in the South Bronx. Litter piled in the street. Vacant, crumbling houses lined the block. And out of fear, police rarely patrolled, Lancaster recalled.

?I hardly ever saw cops come through,? he said. ?I wanted to become one to help communities.?

Now, he does what he loves. But each military trip remains a challenge.

He's married with children, so goodbyes are heartaches, he said.

Regardless, duty has its place.

?I want to serve and protect,? he said. ?I feel like that's why I'm here on Earth, that's my purpose.?

Their service isn't forgotten, Kelly said, even when they're overseas for months.

Down the hallway of the Sheriff's Office, a section of the wall is devoted to the military members. Against a green backdrop, in gold letters, it reads: ?Deployed Military Personnel,? and black frames house the smiles of 12 burly officers. Underneath, a folded American flag rests inside a wooden triangle box.

Kelly said he empathizes with those in active duty. Their service is invaluable and puts day-to-day squabbles into perspective.

?I walk by it every day,? he said. ?It's a constant reminder. You can't look at it and not think about them.

?It hits a little closer to home because these are people who work here. No matter how bad your day is, it's a heck of a lot better than what they're going through.?

2014 Ford Edge Photo and Global Ford Lineup Leaked

Not everything can be kept top secret, especially with so many people working on the same brand new project. Anticipations may be running high, and who knows, some pesky friends could be nudging you for some juicy details, or maybe some previously trashed items resurfaced. You never know.

It looks like one of the new 2014 Ford Edge photos has been leaked from some sort of Powerpoint presentation from Ford Motor Company?s corporate headquarters. While the picture here is a bit pixelated and blurry, it looks to be a photo of the brand new and next generation 2014 Edge SUV.

While still similar to prior models, it has received a few new upgrades for the new model year which includes a new grille connected to a new front clip, new headlamps, and integrated fog lights within a lower fascia.
While its last redesign was back in mid-year 2011. We have no clue what?s hiding in the interior. While that hasn?t been that long ago, it looks like it is going under the knife again. Hopefully the interior is just as slick as the exterior.

Hopefully the new Ford Edge will venture further away from its smaller sibling, the Escape. While the Escape is alright and all, the Edge has more of, well, edge to it. It?s a bit more sleek and stylish and it will be quite interesting to see what Ford has in store in the future for their edgy Edge.

Included in the gallery was this image of the 2014 full global lineup. Check it out.

Freezing Russians fix shattered windows after meteor

Traveling at 33,000 mph, a massive meteor hit the Earth's atmosphere creating a giant shockwave that blew out windows of glass, injuring nearly 1,000 people and creating panic. On the same day, an asteroid half the size of a football field came within 17,000 miles from Earth. NBC's Tom Costello reports.

By Laura Mills, The Associated Press

CHELYABINSK, Russia -- A small army of workers set to work Saturday to replace the estimated 124 square miles of windows shattered by the shock wave from a meteor that exploded over Russia's Chelyabinsk region.

The astonishing Friday morning event blew out windows in more than 4,000 buildings in the region, mostly in the capital city of the same name and injured some 1,200 people, largely with cuts from the flying glass.

NBC's Tom Costello spoke with Canadian hockey player Michael Garnett about what he saw and felt when a meteorite struck near his apartment in Chelyabinsk, Russia.

Fifteen of the injured remained hospitalized on Saturday, one of them in a coma, the regional health ministry said, according to the Interfax news agency.

Regional governor Mikhail Yurevich on Saturday said damage from the high-altitude explosion ? estimated to have the force of 20 atomic bombs ? is estimated at $33 million. He promised to have all the broken windows replaced within a week.

But that is a long wait in a frigid region. The midday temperature in Chelyabinsk was 10 F, and for many the immediate task was to put up plastic sheeting and boards on shattered residential windows.

More than 24,000 people, including volunteers, have mobilized in the region to cover windows, gather warm clothes and food and make other relief efforts, the regional governor's office said. Crews from glass companies in adjacent regions were being flown in.

In the town of Chebarkul, 50 miles west of Chelyabinsk city, divers explored the bottom of an ice-crusted lake looking for meteor fragments believed to have fallen there, leaving a 20-foot-wide hole. Emergency Ministry spokeswoman Irina Rossius told Russian news agencies the search hadn't found anything.

Police kept a small crowd of curious onlookers from venturing out onto the icy lake, where a tent was set up for the divers.

Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, director of the Hayden Planetarium, speaks to NBC's Lester Holt about the meteor and asteroid that approached Earth on Friday.

Many of them were still trying to process the memories of the strange day they'd lived through.

Valery Fomichov said he had been out for a run when the meteor streaked across the sky shortly after sunrise.

"I glanced up and saw a glowing dot in the west. And it got bigger and bigger, like a soccer ball, until it became blindingly white and I turned away," he said.

In a local church, clergyman Sexton Sergei sought to derive a larger lesson.

"Perhaps God was giving a kind of sign, so that people don't simply think about their own trifles on earth, but rather look to the heavens once in a while."

Josh Groban beats Tim McGraw to top of Billboard 200 album chart

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Singer Josh Groban scored his third No. 1 on Wednesday as his latest album shot to the top of the Billboard 200 album chart, edging out new entries from Tim McGraw and rock band Coheed and Cambria.

"All That Echoes," Groban's sixth studio album, sold 145,000 copies in its first week, according to figures from Nielsen SoundScan, making it the singer's third chart-topping album since 2007's holiday set, "Noel."

Country crooner McGraw debuted at No. 2 with his 12th studio album, "Two Lanes of Freedom," selling 107,000 copies. McGraw and his country singer wife, Faith Hill, were also presenters at Sunday's Grammy Awards.

"Now 45," the latest installment of the "Now Music" compilations featuring chart hits by One Direction, Maroon 5 and Pink, landed at No. 3 this week.

British folk band Mumford & Sons' album "Babel" climbed the chart from No. 7 to No. 4, following the band's big Grammy night win on Sunday for Album of the Year.

The album is likely to get a bigger boost from the Grammy Awards win, to be reflected in next week's chart, which accumulates all sales from a Monday to Sunday weekly cycle.

Other new entries on this week's top 10 include Nashville rock band Red with their fourth studio album, "Release the Panic," at No. 7 and New York rockers Coheed and Cambria at No. 9 with their latest set, "The Afterman: Descension."

Thomas Jefferson University Hospital Participates in Major Study to Treat Challenging Hypertension

Thomas Jefferson University Hospital Participates in Major Study to Treat Challenging Hypertension

Nicholas Ruggiero, II, MD

Nicholas Ruggiero II, MD

Uncontrolled or treatment-resistant hypertension poses a serious health threat to nearly six million Americans and 100 million people worldwide.

Patients between the ages of 18 and 80 who have medication-resistant hypertension, defined as a blood pressure greater than 160/90 despite treatment with three or more antihypertensive medications, are needed for a new clinical trial at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. The trial will evaluate renal denervation as an investigational approach to treating treatment-resistant hypertension, a deactivation of the nerves that line the walls of the arteries leading to the kidneys. The renal nerves are part of the sympathetic nervous system, which is one of the ways the body controls blood pressure.

In people with hypertension, the renal nerves can be hyperactive, raising blood pressure and contributing to heart, kidney and blood vessel damage. Renal denervation is an investigational catheter-based procedure.

Hypertension is an especially dangerous chronic disease because of its association with increased cardiovascular risk, including stroke and heart attack, as well as heart failure and kidney disease. Research suggests that 28 percent of medication-treated hypertensive individuals are considered resistant to treatment. Additionally, these patients have a threefold increase in the risk of cardiovascular events compared with individuals with controlled high blood pressure.

?We?re excited to participate in this trial evaluating this investigational interventional therapy, which may represent a new and innovative approach to treating the growing number of treatment-resistant hypertension patients in the United States,? says Nicholas J. Ruggiero II, MD, Director of Structural Heart Disease and Non-Coronary Interventions and principal investigator for the study at Jefferson. ?Renal denervation and ongoing treatment with antihypertensive medications have the potential to help patients with this challenging form of hypertension achieve their target blood pressure levels.?

SYMPLICITY HTN-3 is a randomized, controlled trial designed to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of renal denervation with the investigational Symplicity? renal denervation system in patients with treatment-resistant hypertension and systolic blood pressure higher than 160 mmHg.

?This study has a unique design since patients in the control group may have the option to receive renal denervation treatment six months following randomization if they continue to meet eligibility criteria, which may help extend the potential benefit of renal denervation to all participants in the trial if the trial demonstrates benefit,? says Dr. Ruggerio.

Patients can contact Lisha Anthony, research nurse at 215-503-5521 for more information about the clinical trial at Jefferson. Prospective participants also are encouraged to visit www.SymplifyBPtrial.com to learn more about the SYMPLICITY HTN-3 study and their potential eligibility for the trial. People considering participation in the trial should be diagnosed with hypertension (high blood pressure) and unable to control their hypertension even when taking maximum-tolerated doses of three or more blood pressure medications.

Lynne Peeples: State Of The Union: Obama Addresses Climate Change And Green Energy, Short On Details

President Barack Obama's State of the Union remarks fell in line with what many energy experts, industry representatives and environmental advocates predicted to me earlier today -- lots of rhetoric yet little detail on how to tackle climate change and propel green energy.

Also unsurprisingly, his words on the issues have already generated a range of reactions.

Obama focused his clean energy comments not only on the promise of green jobs, as he primarily has in the past, but on the dire consequences of not taking action on climate change.

"Yes, it's true that no single event makes a trend," Obama said. "But the fact is, the 12 hottest years on record have all come in the last 15.?Heat waves, droughts, wildfires, and floods -- all are now more frequent and intense.?We can choose to believe that Superstorm Sandy, and the most severe drought in decades, and the worst wildfires some states have ever seen were all just a freak coincidence.?Or we can choose to believe in the overwhelming judgment of science -- and act before it's too late."

The Institute for Energy Research was not impressed.

"It is telling that President Obama seemed more concerned about climate change than job creation, clearly following a well-worn path for this administration where no crisis goes to waste in pursuit of the President's progressive agenda," said IER president Thomas Pyle. "For this administration, a deadly hurricane means a chance for carbon taxes."

Frank Maisano, an energy strategist at the law firm Bracewell & Giuliani, was generally unexcited about the climate and energy section of Obama's speech, going as far as to suggest it "put everybody to sleep."

"His rhetoric was very similar to previous State of the Unions," Maisano told The Huffington Post. "And there was lots of similar hype from the environmental community in advance of it, and I suspect there will be following it."

Sure enough, responses so far from the environmental community appear animated -- and fairly positive.

Frances Beinecke, president of the Natural Resources Defense Council, used the term "assertive" as she described the agenda Obama laid out for reducing carbon pollution.

"The president has a full box of tools to strike back at climate chaos," she said in a statement. "The best tool he has is the Clean Air Act. It gives him the authority to reduce the carbon pollution from our dirtiest power plants, the single greatest threat to our climate future. That will take presidential leadership. Americans are counting on it -- and that's what the president delivered tonight."

Trip Van Noppen, president of Earthjustice, offered a similarly optimistic response: "We applaud President Obama's commitment to 'reduce pollution, prepare our communities for the consequences of climate change, and speed the transition to more sustainable sources of energy'," Van Noppen said in a statement. "The President's plan to 'cut in half the energy wasted by our homes and businesses over the next twenty years' is a great idea."

Forecast the Facts campaign director Daniel Souweine was more critical, however.

"While we are excited to hear the President connect the dots between climate change and increasingly severe weather, accurately explaining the problem is not nearly enough," he said in a statement. "Tonight, President Obama set the lowest possible bar for action -- he did not pledge to stop the carbon-spewing Keystone XL Pipeline nor promise carbon regulations on existing power plants. In fact, he pledged no specific actions at all."

Going after something like existing power plants in the State of the Union would have been "too much in the weeds," said Maisano, revisiting his suggestion from earlier today that the speech is about "broad strokes."

Also much to the chagrin of some environmentalists, Obama emphasized energy independence heavily in terms of home-harvested oil and natural gas. "We produce more natural gas than ever before -- and nearly everyone's energy bill is lower because of it," he said.

Still, Pyle of the energy group IER suggested that Obama isn't moving fast enough on oil and gas. "The President promised to 'keep cutting red tape and speeding up new oil and gas permits.' Yet his record is a more reliable indicator of his agenda than his rhetoric," he said. "Currently, it takes more than 300 days to get a permit to drill for oil or gas on federal lands, compared with 10 days in North Dakota where an energy boom has led to the lowest unemployment in the country. For all his talk of speeding up permits, it is telling that one permit remains on ice: the Keystone XL pipeline."

The President also pledged to continue the progress he's made in reducing carbon emissions -- from the doubling of renewable energy from wind and solar to increasing fuel economy standards for cars. He pleased environmentalists with a promise that, going forward, he won't let partisan politics get in his way.

"I urge this Congress to pursue a bipartisan, market-based solution to climate change," Obama said.?"But if Congress won't act soon to protect future generations, I will."

Gigabyte P2742G gaming laptop goes up for sale in UK, priced at 909

Gigabyte unleashed the beast today with a 17.3-inch gaming laptop that's named, awkwardly enough, the P2742G. The system combines a quad-core Core i7 CPU and a GeForce GTX 660M GPU with Windows 8 and a 1080p display. First announced last fall, the P2742G is now available from £909 in the UK via retailers such as Amazon. Likewise, we've spotted similar pre-order prices for US markets in the neighborhood of $1,450. The laptop boasts two storage bays with RAID array support, an optional Blu-ray combo drive and THX TruStudio Pro enhancements. You'll also find a 2-megapixel webcam in the mix, but your color choices are limited to either orange or black. That said, if you're able to grab both, you'll be well-coordinated for when Halloween comes around. In the meantime, you'll find the full spec sheet at the source link.

Unknown Mortal Orchestra: II - Music Review - No Ripcord

Music Reviews (Jagjaguwar) Buy it from Insound Rating - 8/10

Working as a cart attendant at Target was about as fulfilling as a glamorous eight bucks an hour could afford, but there was one hidden aspect of the job I grew to love: Finding weird stuff in the shopping carts. Oh sure, the occasional unopened container of shaving cream was certainly useful and welcomed, but it was the totally out-of nowhere stuff, like, say, a custom-made Simpsons yarmulke, that would mysteriously catch my eye and beckon me to bring it home to proudly show my friends my unique find. Sure it may lose its luster as the days turn to weeks, but you never forget the initial ?wow? factor of your first experience.

If Portland/New Zealand trio Unknown Mortal Orchestra?s debut single, Ffunny Ffriends, was one of these random curiosities, it would be the kind that crashes into the parking lot like a meteorite, glowing lime green and blasting pop music from outer space. Complete with warped guitars, ambiguous vocals, and a sputtering drum beat that feels like it?s been oscillating for centuries, the song felt totally unique and incredibly hard to explain, with the song wrapped in a lo-fi cloak that made it sound not from a past decade but more like a crackling radio transmission picked up from some dance hall on Mars. Their following self-titled debut would follow suit in this endeavor, feeling more like a pack of Wacky Packages cards as each song proved to be more inventive and grotesque than the next. However, these tracks inevitably felt more like looped sketches than fully-concocted songs, and, as the memory of their whacked-out debut began to fade, it became clear that UMO needed to grow as a band if they hoped to stay relevant.

Fortunately, this is where UMO?s latest, II, excels furthest, as both the album's strongest and weakest moments display a level of maturity and growth that couldn?t have been achieved while the group was little more than an anonymous Bandcamp oddity. While their self-titled debut featured an interesting smorgasbord of twisted pop curiosities, the group?s sophomore album feels vastly more complete and fully realized, with an array of bright, varied pop songs mixed with some more expansive moments that feel more defined and human than anything before it. The core elements present on their debut are still intact, but with songs like the light-as-air Swim and Sleep (Like a Shark) and the sultry So Good at Being in Trouble, UMO find a way to work these quirky elements into well-developed pop songs that balance personality with honesty. There are still a number of surprises to be found, such as the infectious One At a Time, which switches between Bootsy Collins funk and Lennon-esque 60s rock while never stumbling. However, II on the whole feels less interested in throwing listeners off than it does welcoming them to their own unique idea of pop.

One of the aspects of II that immediately caught me off guard was the lyrics, which couldn?t have been more of an afterthought on the band?s debut. On II, however, it seems like singer/songwriter Rubin Nielson is determined to make sure we know exactly how he?s hurting right from the get-go, with the otherwise upbeat and noodly From the Sun opening with the downer, ?Isolation can put a gun in your hand,? with more clarity and honesty than we?re used to hearing from these guys. Themes of isolation and uncertainty stalk the album like a hungry hammerhead, as even the crisp suspended chords of Swim and Sleep (Like a Shark) can?t hide downcast ?lines like ?I'd fall to the bottom and I'd hide 'til the end of time?/ In that sweet cool darkness.? This comes to a catharsis in the track Faded in the Morning, the one track where the uncertainty and claustrophobia of the lyrics is fully reflected in the music itself, with Nielsons gnarled, knotted riffs bringing an added level of tension to the track not seen in anything the band has written before.

The songs on II also help re-cast UMO as an actual full-functioning band rather than a weird studio experiment, with Nielson?s inventive and proficient guitar gymnastics, ranging from tangled prog licks to space-funk riffs, often leading the charge while band mates Jake Portrait and Riley Geare keep things on track with their propulsive rhythm section. It?s been a while since indie pop ? of all genres ? had anything resembling a ?guitar hero,? but Nielson?s bright, spindly guitar lines, which practically ooze slime out of the frets, show what some creative riffage can do to help your band stand out. As a singular band unit, however, UMO add a bit of freeform exploration into the mix, allowing almost every track to explore their boundaries for a moment before safely settling down. This, however, ends up backfiring in the case of some of the longer tracks, like No Need For a Leader and the drawn out Monki, which end up drastically overstaying their welcome and drift a little too in and out of focus. This, unfortunately, does cause a bit of a mid-album lull, but not one that?s detrimental, especially when considering the superb quality of many of the album's other tracks.

I had initially thought that UMO would suffer the tragic fate of those weird little tchotchke items found in the ?miscellaneous? sections of department stores ? the ones that draw you in with their unique charm and character yet end up gathering dust on your shelf and leave you with nothing but a bad case of buyer?s remorse. To my surprise, however, II triumphantly bypasses novelty for a more meaningful level of significance: An album whose songs, personality, and band-chemistry come together for something that could well outlast its own current weirdness ? a knick knack that, for me, will be spending a lot of time off the shelf.

Pig Manure Reveals More Reason To Worry About Antibiotics

Pigs at a farm in Beijing peer out at visitors. Half of all the pigs in the world live in China.

There's a global campaign to force meat producers to rein in their use of antibiotics on pigs, chickens and cattle. European countries, especially Denmark and the Netherlands, have taken the lead. The U.S. is moving, haltingly, toward similar restrictions. Now the concerns about rampant antibiotic use appear to have reached China, where meat production and antibiotic use have been growing fast.

Half of all the pigs in the world live in China ? a consequence of the country's swelling appetite for pork. And like pork producers in many other countries, Chinese farmers have turned to antibiotics and other feed additives to control disease in their herds and also to make the animals grow faster.

The exact extent of antibiotic use in Chinese agriculture is unknown, because authorities don't monitor it. But researchers have sometimes found disturbingly high levels of antibiotic residues in manure from Chinese pig farms.

A study published Monday by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences adds to evidence that antibiotic use by Chinese pork producers poses health risks. According to the study, manure from pig farms doesn't just contain antibiotic residues. It also carries high concentrations of bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics. This increases the risk that antibiotic resistance will move into bacteria that infect humans, and the resulting diseases will be more difficult to treat.

But there's also good news. Scientists from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, who took the lead in the new study, are increasingly aware of the problem and looking for ways to fight it. They invited James Tiedje, a microbiologist from Michigan State University, to join their effort.

"They were quite forthcoming," Tiedje tells The Salt.

The Chinese scientists monitored antibiotic residues in manure from three different pig farms. They found plenty, but not at exceptionally high levels.

Tiedje then tested those manure samples, looking for genes that make bacteria resistant to particular antibiotics. That's when he hit the jackpot: He found more than 100 different resistance genes. The concentration of resistance genes was almost 200 times higher in these samples, compared to manure from a pig farm that had never used antibiotics.

"We're not trying to single out the Chinese here. This is a global problem," says Tiedje. Similar levels of antibiotic residues, for instance, have been found in manure on European farms.

The study indicates that treating the manure after it leaves the farm can significantly reduce the potential for this manure to spread antibiotic resistance to other bacteria in the surrounding environment. Composting it, for instance, cuts the total population of microbes in manure ? which means fewer microbes carrying antibiotic resistance genes.

How to Stay Together: Changes for a Successful Relationship ...

Feeling obligated instead of infatuated this Valentine?s Day? Don?t worry you aren?t alone. A recent study by WhatsYourPrice.com?s sister website, SeekingArrangement.com, found that 56% of couples are making Valentine?s Day plans because they believe it is a requirement. Did you know that we set ourselves up for failure when it comes to relationships?
When you take two single people and spin them into a relationship you are dealing with just that. Two single people. In fact, to make it work, in a conventional relationship or in online dating, we have to change our environment and go against nature.

2f4112f1686a50ed923275a3b3e1542c (1)
On a personal note, while researching this topic the overall lack of romance in ways to make a relationship work bothered me. Please note that if none of these changes work, it might be time to consider a relationship counselor, or even part ways.

1. Spend time with other couples, but avoid toxic couples.
Don?t waste your time with double dates. Rather, go out or engage in regular activities with other couples. Being with happy couples subliminally makes you notice all the good things about your relationship. Spending too much time with singles triggers envy. Our natural need to have what everyone else has. In this case, many people confuse being unavailable with a lack of freedom.

2. Don?t do anything. Seriously just sit there.

Remember when you would do everything to be alone with your significant other? When was the last time you spent time with him/ her without the television or computer on? Unplug and listen. You might be surprised as to what has been running through both your minds.

3. Have a first date every month.

Newlyweds, committed couple, or rounding the Copper Anniversary. Reserve one day of each month to go on a first date with your significant other. Date nights are common and feel obligatory. Pull out all the stops like you did on the first date. Ladies, primp up and act as if you were on a first date?that means no nagging and actually inquiring about his interests. Gentlemen, mind your manners and treat her as if you are trying to win her over.

4. Go on vacation or stay-cation together.
Did you have another argument about the dishes or dirty clothes on the bathroom floor? Was last week?s ?somewhere special? the local pizza shop? Mixing travel and dating is a proven formula for romance. Whether it?s a vacation or a stay-cation at your local resort, taking a break from your everyday routine can help rejuvenate any relationship and mend frazzled nerves.

What did you think about these tips?
What are additional ways to make a relationship work?

Stars show skin, but adhere to Grammy dress code

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - There were no "wardrobe malfunctions" but stars at the 55th Grammy Awards were not covering up either, despite being asked to dress "appropriately."

Presenter Jennifer Lopez, wearing a black off-the-shoulder Anthony Vaccarello gown slit up her thigh on one side, joked about her attire.

"As you can see, I read the memo," said the diva who caused a stir a few years ago when she appeared at the Grammys in a Versace gown with a neckline that dropped below her navel.

"You inspired the memo!" said her co-presenter Pitbull, getting a big laugh from the audience.

Broadcaster CBS last week issued a memo asking that Grammy performers and presenters keep their breasts, buttocks and genitals covered up.

"I thought about the dress code. And thought about it again. And that's about it. I respect it. See, I wore clothes," Destiny's Child singer Kelly Rowland told reporters backstage of her black Georges Chakra gown that featured several strategically placed cutouts.

Singer Kimbra, who recorded "Somebody That I Used to Know" with Gotye, and won Record of the Year, wore a sheer, sparkly dress with a skin-colored layer beneath, giving the illusion she was covered by strategically placed baubles. "I'm fine with the dress code," she said on the red carpet.

Katy Perry bared her cleavage in a green gown, but Beyonce covered up in a black pantsuit for the red carpet and Rihanna chose an elegant red gown.

Redfoo, the flamboyant 37-year-old LMFAO singer, had some fun and showed off his legs on the red carpet, sporting knee length pants to go with his suit.

"I couldn't wear no Speedo ... so I got my suit on," he told Reuters on the red carpet.

Singer Adele's look was a little too conservative for some people's tastes. Her red and pink, flowered-covered frock featured a high neck.

As usual, there were some kooky outfits on display. Al Walser, who was nominated for Best Dance Recording for his single, "I Can't Live Without You," donned an astronaut's space suit.

Born in Switzerland to a mother from Lichtenstein and an African father, Walser explained that being from Lichtenstein was like being from another planet because it is so small.

Blues singer Dr. John wore a Mardi Gras-inspired feathered headdress for his performance with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band.

Report: Chinese Cyber-Espionage Campaign Targeting the U.S.

According to the The Washington Post, a U.S. government report details an ongoing cyber-espionage campaign that threatens the nation's economy. The report identifies China as the country behind the majority of the cyberattacks.

The Washington Post's Ellen Nakashima reported, "A new intelligence assessment has concluded that the United States is the target of a massive, sustained cyber-espionage campaign that is threatening the country?s economic competitiveness, according to individuals familiar with the report. The National Intelligence Estimate identifies China as the country most aggressively seeking to penetrate the computer systems of American businesses and institutions to gain access to data that could be used for economic gain. The report, which represents the consensus view of the U.S. intelligence community, describes a wide range of sectors that have been the focus of hacking over the past five years, including energy, finance, information technology, aerospace and automotives, according to the individuals familiar with the report, who spoke on the condition of anonymity about the classified document. The assessment does not quantify the financial impact of the espionage, but outside experts have estimated it in the tens of billions of dollars. "

CNET's Don Reisinger added, "The cyberwar between the U.S. and China has been well-documented. The countries have not publicly said that they're targeting each other, but both sides have said that they're being hit with cyberattacks. It's also been widely believed that China has been attempting to access corporate information for its gain. Interestingly, China might not be the only threat the U.S. faces. According to the Post, the NIE says Russia, Israel, and France have all conducted cyber-espionage efforts aimed at economic efforts in the U.S. Still, China's efforts are most frequent."

New York Magazine's Margaret Hartmann noted, "While it appears the hackers were targeting the media companies to keep tabs on their reporting on China, the National Intelligence Estimate found that the larger aim of the larger cyber-espionage campaign is to steal trade secrets and other data that could give China an economic edge. (The report found that Russia, Israel, and France have also pilfered economic intelligence, but not nearly as much). One frequent target is thought to be companies involved in military technology, such as Lockheed Martin."

Voice of America quoted Brad Glosserman, executive director of the Hawaii-based Pacific Forum think tank, who said, "As for the vulnerabilities to the financial sector, I would assume that's correct, but I would suggest that the vulnerabilities are throughout the U.S. economy." He added. "The problem is that many people do not like to speak about these things because either they're unaware they are being attacked or very reluctant to publicize their vulnerabilities."

Health-Conscious Foodies Must Discover ... - Diets in Review

Even though I have lost several hundred pounds, this has not diminished one iota my love of good food. Even when I was tipping the scales at close to 450 pounds, I adored fine dining, unique flavors, and overall great food finds. You see, I wasn?t that morbidly obese guy who spent all day eating fast food. Did I eat drive thru? You bet I did, but I also have more of a refined palate than that.

I had the good fortune of being in Baltimore for the FitBloggin? convention last fall, which helped me network with tons of like-minded people in the health and fitness world, as well as aid me in furthering knowledge on my health journey. It just so happened that the natural products expo (Expo East) was right next door! I wandered over there and was like a kid in a candy store! Being the foodie I am, one of the booths that stuck out was Seitenbacher?s selection of oils.

Being a foodie I not only enjoy EATING the food, but also COOKING it (so I can then eat it). There are some bad food oils out there that aren?t too good for you, but this, being the natural products expo, I was expecting something exceptional, and I was not disappointed.

Seitenbacher is a German company with a varied offering of natural products, but I was definitely drawn to their oils. The first several I tried were unrefined seed oils. The pumpkin seed oil had a very gentle pumpkin flavoring I could definitely use in some recipes. The poppy seed was great as well, which I really recommend for cooking as I think it would be a perfect complement to some meaty dishes. The last one was probably the healthiest in my opinion, but also the one with an acquired taste: hemp seed oil. I LOVE hemp seed products, they are so beneficial to your health. I like the taste as well, but I understand it is not for everyone. It?s probably the one I would use the most, however.

Now for the fun part ? the flavored oils. They use sunflower oil as the base and take the flavors to a whole new level! The lemon oil is so light and fruity it would be PERFECT on any good salad or as a dressing for chicken and fish. The chili oil has one of the most beautiful colors I?ve ever seen in an oil, this vibrant red, and my only (very small) argument would be to have just a tad more heat to it. My absolute favorite, as I love this herb, is the rosemary oil. Just a little drizzle of this on some freshly baked or toasted bread would be a dream. It would also stand up very well to bold meats like beef or lamb. The best part is, all of these oils are organic!

Expo East left a great impression on me with several great standouts, such as Seitenbacher. Even though my body is much smaller, my taste buds still loom large. I just make much healthier choices overall. Here?s looking forward to Expo West in March!

DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) ? Syrian President Bashar Assad reshuffled his Cabinet on Saturday, appointing seven new ministers in a move that appeared aimed at trying to shore up an economy that has been ravaged by the country's 2-year-old revolt, state media said.

State TV said Assad replaced the heads of the oil, finance, social affairs, labor, housing, public works and agriculture ministries. Key security ministries such as defense and interior, which are on the front lines of the civil war, remained unchanged.

Syria's economy has been devastated by the civil war, which has left major cities in ruins and gutted the nation's industries. Power outages are common and Syrians in some areas must stand in hours-long lines for bread and gasoline.

The reshuffle took place as fighting in Damascus and its suburbs raged for a fourth consecutive day, with clashes focused in southern and northeastern neighborhoods of the capital.

Rebels brought their fight within a mile of the heart of Damascus on Friday, seizing army checkpoints and cutting a key highway with a row of burning tires as they pressed their campaign for the city, the seat of Assad's power.

Both the rebels and the government consider the fight for Damascus the most likely endgame in a civil war that has already killed more than 60,000. The regime controls movement in and out of the heavily defended city with a network of checkpoints, and rebels have failed so far to make significant inroads and hold them.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported intense air raids on several Damascus suburbs on Saturday, including Zamalka and Douma, and near a major highway that leads to the capital. It added that troops shelled the northeastern neighborhoods of Jobar and Qaboun that have witnessed fighting and shelling since Thursday.

A resident who lives near Jobar said he fled with his family Friday afternoon to a safer area close to central Damascus because of the intensity of the fighting.

"It was a bad day. We heard lots of explosions," he said speaking on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals.

The Observatory and the Local Coordination Committees reported that rebels captured a housing compound for army officers in the Damascus suburb of Adra. To the north, the Observatory said rebels entered parts of the Mannagh air base near the border with Turkey that has been subjected to attacks by rebels for weeks.

The civil war has heavily damaged infrastructure like oil pipelines, bridges and water and power stations. The airport in Syria's largest city and commercial hub, Aleppo, is closed due to fighting. The exchange rate for one U.S. dollar today is around 95 Syrian pounds on the black market, which is more than double the 47 pounds to the dollar when the crisis began in March 2011.

The presidential decrees issued Saturday appeared to be an attempt to address some of the fallout ? economic and social ? from the civil war.

The order split what used to be the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs into two posts, apparently to give the new Ministry of Social Affairs responsibility for rising number of people who have fled from one part of the country to another to escape the fighting.

Jens Laerke, a spokesman for the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, said Tuesday that 2 million people have been displaced inside Syria while 4 million need urgent help. Those numbers could rise if fighting continues, he said. He said the humanitarian situation in Syria had reached "catastrophic" proportions, with some 2.5 million people lacking food.

Syria's civil war has settled into a bloody stalemate that shows no signs of stopping, despite several tentative proposals from both sides to find a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

Syria's Information Minister Omran al-Zoubi floated the latest proposal late Friday, saying Damascus is ready for dialogue with the opposition, so long as they lay down their weapons. He said anyone who responds will not be harmed.

The offer is unlikely to gain much traction among the Syrian opposition. The rebel movement is highly decentralized and deeply distrusts the regime, and most groups are unlikely to stop fighting so long as Assad remains president.

Assad in a rare speech in January outlined his own vision for ending the country's conflict with a plan that would keep him in power. He also dismissed any chance of dialogue with the armed opposition and called on Syrians to fight what he called "murderous criminals."

He offered a national reconciliation conference, elections and a new constitution but demanded regional and Western countries stop funding and arming rebels trying to overthrow his regime first.

Syria's opposition rejected the proposal. Those fighting to topple the regime have repeatedly said they will accept nothing less than the president's departure.

On Jan. 30, in a sharp shift from their resolve, the Syrian National Coalition's president, Mouaz al-Khatib, said he is willing to talk to the regime if that would help end bloodshed. His call was sharply criticized by members of the opposition.

Al-Khatib suggested that Assad should begin releasing tens of thousands of political prisoners as a first step before Sunday or the offer will be void.
