New charges - and maybe a new home - coming for Maine hermit

By Tracy Connor, Staff Writer, NBC News

The Maine "hermit" wants to get back to the land, but first he'll have to deal with up to a dozen new burglary charges.

When he was arrested for a break-in earlier this month, Christopher Knight, 47, amazed the public with his story of spending 27 years in the woods with no human contact, surviving on whatever he could steal from surrounding camps.

Kennebec County District Attorney Maeghan Maloney said Friday that police are combing through burglary reports from the last six years ? the statute of limitations ? and matching them to Knight's confession of hundreds of thefts.

Kennebec County Sheriff's Office

Christopher Knight was arrested on April 4, 2013, while stealing food from a camp in Rome, Maine.

In the next two weeks, Knight will be hit with a new round of charges. Maloney, though, said no one is anxious to throw the book at the remorseful recluse, who wants to pay back his victims.

"Christopher Knight has a bank account and all money put into that bank account will go first to pay restitution and any more left over goes to him," Maloney said.

"He has said it is his dream to have enough to buy his own piece of land."

Knight, who told police he simply walked into the forest when he was 19 and never looked back, built a makeshift camp for himself in Rome that has since been dismantled.

There were rumors of a "North Pond Hermit" who was breaking into camps that ring the pond, but no one saw him until Knight tripped an alarm three weeks ago and was arrested.

He was charged with one burglary and then a second. His bail was raised to $250,000 then lowered to $25,000, with the restriction that it couldn't be posted by a third party, to stop someone from taking advantage of him.

While he's been held in the county jail, where he's awaiting a mental health evaluation, his only complaint has been "the television is too loud," Maloney said.

He mainly speaks to his lawyer, who declined to speak about him, and the investigating officer, Trooper Diane Perkins-Vance. The trooper has befriended Knight, visiting when she's off the clock.

"He told me it's not that he dislikes people, he just doesn?t want to be around people," Perkins-Vance told WCSH.

Knight's apparent restraint in stealing only what he needed and his apologies to the victims have made him a sympathetic figure. He even got a marriage proposal, and there's talk of a book deal.

Maloney said the suspect lucked out by getting Perkins-Vance as an investigator and herself as the prosecutor.

"[She] hasn?t viewed this case as 'I want to lock him up and throw away the key," the DA said, "And I ran on a platform of being smart on crime and differentiating between crimes where a person can be rehabilitated and ones where they cannot."

Novel therapeutic approaches may cure chronic HBV infection

Apr. 25, 2013 ? Exciting new data presented today at the International Liver Congress? 2013 include results from early in vitro and in vivo studies targeting covalently closed circular DNA (cccDNA), which may form the basis of a cure for chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection.

HBV cccDNA is organized into mini-chromosomes within the nucleus of infected cells by histone and non-histone proteins. Despite the availability of efficient therapies against HBV, long-term persistence of cccDNA necessitates life-long treatments to suppress the virus. The following three experimental studies demonstrate effective HBV-cccDNA targeting/depletion using novel therapeutic approaches which offer the potential of a cure.

Liver regeneration induces strong reduction of viral replication and cccDNA levels, but not complete cccDNA eradication; without antiviral treatment, de novo HBV infection can be re-established.

Key findings of research in HBV-infected human hepatocytes using the uPA/SCID chimeric mouse system show that liver regeneration induces strong reduction of viral replication and cccDNA levels, with rapid formation of cccDNA-free hepatocytes. However, because complete cccDNA eradication is not achieved, in the absence of antiviral treatment, de novo HBV infection could be re-established in quiescent (non-dividing) human hepatocytes. This suggests that induction of hepatocyte turn-over together with antiviral drugs inducing viral suppression, such as nucleoside analogues and IFN, or blocking cell entry, may accelerate the clearance of the viral minichromosome.

Targeting epigenetic control of nuclear cccDNA minichromosome to suppress HBV transcription and replication may form basis for other therapeutic approaches to curing chronic HBV infection.

In the infected liver cell the rate of replication of HBV is regulated by the acetylation or methylation of histone proteins which surround the cccDNA minichromosome -- so called epigenetic regulation. In a separate innovative study, the suppression of HBV transcription and replication by small molecules that target the epigenetic control of nuclear cccDNA minichromosome was investigated. The different classes of small molecules studied included: Class I, II and III histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDACi); p300 and PCAF histone acetyltransferases (HAT) inhibitors; hSirt1 activators; JMJD3 histone demethylase inhibitors.

The combined inhibition of p300 and PCAF HATs resulted in an evident reduction of HBV replication which mirrored the decrease of pgRNA transcription. The hSirt1/2 activator MC2791 and the JMJD3 inhibitor MC3119, albeit with different efficiency, inhibited both HBV replication and cccDNA transcription. Results represent a proof of concept that activation of hSirt1 and Ezh2 (through the inhibition of its functional antagonist JMJD3) by small molecules can induce an active epigenetic suppression of HBV cccDNA minichromosome similar to that observed with IFN?, and lead to persistent cccDNA silencing.

Lymphtoxin beta receptor (LTbR) agonisation represents basis for novel alternative therapeutic approach to curing chronic HBV infection.

The final study demonstrated that stimulating the lymphtoxin beta receptor (LTbR) provides an effective, long lasting and non-cytopathic mechanism for achieving effective HBV-cccDNA depletion in infected hepatocytes. Cell culture models including HBV-infected HepaRG cells and primary human hepatocytes were used to test the effect of antibodies stimulating human LTbR (BS1 or CBE11). Results show that a strong and dose-dependent anti-HBV effect was achieved by activation of the LTbR. All HBV replication markers were decreased with this treatment, including cccDNA in cells where HBV infection was already established.

Hepatitis B is the most prevalent cause of chronic viral hepatitis and a major global health problem. Prof. Fabien Zoulim, EASL Educational Councillor commented on the exciting new data: "In chronic hepatitis B infection, the viral genome forms a stable minichromosome -- the covalently closed circular DNA (cccDNA) -- which can persist throughout the lifespan of the hepatocyte."

"Current treatments focus on suppression of HBV and discovery of compounds directly targeting cccDNA has been one of the major challenges to curing HBV infection; but these preliminary data show novel therapeutic approaches can be applied to successfully target cccDNA with the long-term aspiration of finding a cure" added Prof. Fabien Zoulim.

This Beginner's DSLR Is Your Deal of the Day

Nikon's D3000 came out in 2009, and even back then it was a cheap DSLR. It's meant for beginners. In addition to the decidedly non-professional $500 price, the D3000 actually features educational menus to help a first time photographer learn the ropes. Still, it wasn't cheap, especially for tyros or students—if you're not sure you're gonna stick with the hobby, it's hard to spend what amounts to a rent payment. But flash forward to 2013, and Adorama is selling the D3000 for $210—a price even broke college students can afford. More »

Four children die in S. Carolina mobile home fire

HARTSVILLE, S.C. (AP) ? Four young children, including twin girls, perished Wednesday afternoon when fire swept through a mobile home in the South Carolina city of Hartsville, authorities said.

The 1-year-old twins and their brothers aged 3 and 4 were found dead in the home after firefighters put out the blaze, Darlington County Coroner Todd Hardee said.

Hardee said autopsies are planned Thursday as part of an investigation to determine the cause of death and their identities.

Sheriff Wayne Byrd said the mother was in the yard when firefighters arrived. He didn't elaborate.

The fire is under investigation by both the sheriff 's department and the State Law Enforcement Division. No charges have been filed and authorities were preparing to talk with the mother.

Russell Cox, a spokesman for the city of Hartsville, said firefighters took about 10 minutes to put out the flames and then found the victims in the charred interior of the home, which was located on a street lined with mobile homes

While a photograph tweeted by the Darlington County sheriff's office showed the charred interior of the home, it indicated the outside appeared to be relatively undamaged. A tricycle and another children's toy could be seen in the yard.

Smoke could be seen still wafting from an open front door where fire hoses snaked through the opening.

Hartsville is a city of some 8,000 people about 60 miles east of the state capital, Columbia.

Solid Advice For People Thinking About Homeschooling | Exciting ...

An excellent education is vital, but this doesn?t have to take place in a traditional school setting. Homeschooling is increasing in popularity every day. The home learning environment can be a brilliant setting for delivering a solid education. If this interests you, you?re sure to appreciate the insights that follow.

Create a meal plan at the start of the week to save time and reduce stress. It is a great idea to bake a big lasagna, divide it into pieces and freeze the portions so you can serve it during the week. Preparing food in advance is a smart plan if you plan to be busy or if you are frequently tired after a day of instruction. Try various cooking plans to find the one that suits your needs and schedule.

TIP! Set up an online blog for your child. Since writing is part of any curriculum, this is a great learning tool for your child.

Remember to take time for family relations, even though you are homeschooling. Set aside time to spend with your partner. Otherwise, homeschooling your child could consume all of your time. No one should feel excluded or neglected because you spend a lot of time with the child you are homeschooling. Some togetherness can really help.

Before making the final decision to homeschool, consider your personal qualifications and make sure you are prepared to take on the roll of teacher. Address and take care of any issues with your child before beginning the program.

TIP! Become familiar with homeschooling laws in your state. There are state regulations that must be complied with when you choose to home school your children.

Make sure that craft supplies are always within reach for your children. While one child is engaged in serious learning, the other can be kept occupied with crafts. This keeps them happy and busy. This is an excellent way to teach and for children to learn.

If you?re teaching a student in high school, then you are aware that the goal is passing the GED exam. You can learn what areas they are weak in by having them take an example GED test ahead of time. This will let you enact remedial education strategies to shore up weaknesses.

TIP! Visit the library often. Reading skills are the cornerstone to any educational process.

Your child?s interests and strengths should serve as a starting point in the development of the curriculum and teaching approaches. Ask what they would prefer to do, and give their imagination freedom to go wild. Having this type of input will make learning more fun for them. You might be amazed at the ideas they have!

Don?t give lectures the same way as a teacher. You are not a professional, so it is not necessary to act like one. Also, these are your kids you are dealing with, and you know how much your kids hate listening to your lectures. You will get better results if you read a book or watch a documentary together. There is a good chance you will do quite a bit of learning as well.

TIP! Unless you can commit to disciplining your child as both a teacher and a student, it will be difficult to set boundaries. Sit down before your school year starts and make a plan for each of your children.

It?s important that you be realistic with yourself when it comes to your weakness, if you plan to homeschool. A lot of parents tend to skip subjects that they do not feel they know very well. This will leave gaps in your child?s education. You can hire a tutor to teach subjects that you don?t feel qualified teaching.

Find other families that are part of the homeschooling community. Homeschooling is very rewarding, but it is not always easy. Other parents can provide you with some great information and support that will help you make it through the tough times. You can provide expertise to them as well, bonding yourselves for a lifetime. On top of that, your children can become friends as well. Homeschooling may be a bit isolating for your child, so a group like this is a great opportunity for him to make friends. Making sure to be part of a homeschool group will go a long way toward benefiting you and the your kids.

TIP! Look into the wide variety of learning options available. Children will learn efficiently in different ways.

Due to the close bond you share with your children, it is inevitable that your homeschooling journey will at times become very tense. Keep day-to-day home concerns out of the classroom. If things get too tense, you?ve got the ability to take a bit of a break. This is helpful for your child as well as you.

Try to split up some of the children?s activities outside of the classroom with your partner, to help make your life a little easier. Your spouse can be in charge of extra-curricular activities. It is imperative that you set aside some time to relax with the other part of the team as well.

TIP! Homeschooling requires extreme patience. This is important.

If you have smaller children around while homeschooling, you need to set some ground rules for them. Set up a little spot for them with special toys, and let them know that they have to leave if they can not stay quiet. Take breaks several times to let them have extra attention and act silly. This will ensure that there are no distractions in the classroom and the area remains quiet for studying.

Just like you would make sure your child had a good breakfast and packed a lunch for a public school day, you need to feed your child a meal or snack before a homeschooling session. You have to keep their energy level up. It will also help them stay focused while you teach.

TIP! Can you homeschool effectively? Teaching any child, especially your own, is never easy. Homeschooling also carries with it a large financial commitment.

Homeschooling support groups are found across the nation. This is a growing trend. You may be surprised at how many other families you can find within your community. You can also find families that homeschool their kids while online. There is so much information to be shared! In addition, your kids can make new friends. A support group makes the entire homeschool process easier.

You should know more about homeschooling now that you have read this information. Armed with this information, you can now make a wise decision regarding your children?s education. Even if you decide to look elsewhere for your child?s education, you can use much of this information to supplement what the public or private schools are offering.

TIP! Older children can help their younger siblings. It some of your children are further ahead academically or are older than your other children, let them help the littler ones study.

Intractable seizures halted with experimental treatment for rare pediatric 'Pretzel syndrome'

Apr. 24, 2013 ? With a better understanding of underlying mechanisms that cause a rare neurodevelopmental disorder in the Old Order Mennonite population, referred to as Pretzel syndrome, a new study reports that five children were successfully treated with a drug that modifies the disease process, minimizing seizures and improving receptive language.

The study, by researchers including experts from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, appears in the journal Science Translational Medicine.

The disease -- PSME or polyhydramnios, megalencephaly, and symptomatic epilepsy syndrome, commonly called Pretzel syndrome -- is caused by a double-deletion of a specific gene that encodes for STRADA. About 4 percent of Old Order Mennonite individuals in Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York have a single copy of the deleted gene. When a double-deletion occurs, the loss of STRADA causes an activation of mTORC1 and, subsequently, the kinase p70S6K. This causes intractable seizures and results in limited cognitive development and language function, leaving PSME patients wheelchair-bound, mute and completely dependent.

When five children, ranging from 8 months old to nearly 5 years old, were given doses of a drug that inhibits mTOR, the drug Sirolimus (rapamycin) significantly reduced seizures. Four of the five patients have been seizure free for the last year; previously no PSME patients had achieved freedom from seizures, even while on anti-epileptic medication. Starting the drug by three months of age seemed to stave off seizures; one patient who started treatment early had a single seizure and another has had no seizures.

The use of this drug in Pretzel syndrome patients stems from earlier research showing that sirolimus was an effective treatment for a related and more common disorder, tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC), which is also associated with seizures, altered brain structure and enhanced mTOR activation.

The research was conducted by a team including the study's senior author, Peter Crino, MD, PhD, now at Temple University School of Medicine and Shriners Pediatric Research Center; lead author and MD/PhD candidate Whitney Parker, and Ksenia Orlova, William Parker, Jacqueline Birnbaum, Marianna Baybis, Jetle Helfferich, and Kei Okochi from the Penn Epilepsy Center and Department of Neurology; Vera Krymskaya and Dmitry Goncharov from Penn's Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care division, and collagues from the University of Groningen School of Medicine in the Netherlands, as well as partners from the Clinic for Special Children in Strasburg, Pa., the Department of Biology in Franklin and Marshall College and Lancaster General Hospital in Lancaster, Pa.

The study was funded by the National Institutes of Health (NS045022, HL110551, GM008216) and the Penn-Pfizer Collaborative Program, and a Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award.

Advisers warn UK CO2 emissions 'up'

A new report has laid bare the UK's pretensions to have cut greenhouse gas emissions over recent years.

Ministers have claimed global leadership in reducing CO2 emissions and urged other nations to follow suit.

But the official Climate Change Committee (CCC) said that the UK's total contribution towards heating the climate has actually increased.

This is because the UK is importing goods that produce CO2 in other countries.

The UK has been cutting emissions at home, but it has been importing more goods from other countries, pushing up CO2 emissions there.

The UK is second highest importer in the world of these so-called "embodied" emissions.

Each individual in the UK is responsible for double the imported emissions of someone in Germany, which has kept its manufacturing base.

BBC News has been highlighting this issue for some time and MPs asked the committee to examine it last year.

Total emissions target?

The committee said although production of CO2 is down 20% in the past two decades, the overall trend is up 10% because the cuts in production emissions have been outweighed by CO2 in the form of imported goods.

Some commentators have argued that the UK should switch to declaring its total emissions, instead of its production emissions.

The committee rejected this option as it is hard to quantify imported emissions and difficult to influence other nations' climate policies.

The CCC's chief executive, David Kennedy, told the BBC that it would be a mistake to target imported emissions in official analysis.

"High levels of imported emissions reflect the need for emissions reductions in other countries if climate objectives are to be achieved," he said.

"We should focus on reducing emissions produced in the UK, and proactively supporting an international agreement to reduce global emissions, following which our imported emissions would fall."

Mr Kennedy said border tariffs on CO2 embodied in imported goods should not be ruled out as an interim measure while the world struggles towards a global agreement.

The report did contain some good news on climate policy for the government.

Some lobbyists have argued that UK's unilateral climate targets are forcing up energy prices and driving manufacturing jobs abroad, but the committee found this false.

Impact on jobs 'negligible'

It said the UK exported its manufacturing jobs during the structural changes of the 1980s (during the Thatcher government) and pointed out that few industrial jobs are being lost at present.

It said the impact of carbon policies on jobs is "negligible", although it did not offer a figure.

The committee also said that energy costs due to low-carbon policies are expected to rise by 20-25% from 2011 to 2020 for industrial users.

But it said that across industry as a whole, energy costs account for around 3% of total costs, so increasing energy prices are unlikely to have much impact.

It admitted that the government may need to continue support for firms needing large amounts of power.

The energy-intensive industries account for around 2% of UK GDP and 2% of jobs.

The committee agreed that if nations fail to agree a meaningful deal on CO2, the UK should reconsider in 2020 its own unilateral climate change targets.

Gareth Stace from the manufacturers' association EEF said: "This report (shows) unilateral climate change policies are adding costs that are not borne by our competitors. The government must ensure that cost effectiveness is at the heart of its approach to securing investment in new low carbon energy."

But the green group WWF said the report showed the German government had over-compensated its industry and urged the UK government not to follow suit.

Friends of the Earth's Shrubsole said: "Ministers must come clean about our carbon emissions - it's no good pretending they're falling, when UK imports have actually caused them to rise. This reveals the truth behind attempts to blame countries like China for climate change, when a significant proportion of their emissions are produced in order to maintain our quality of life."

Heavy fighting in northeast Nigeria, death toll unclear

By Tim Cocks and Isaac Abrak

ABUJA (Reuters) - Nigerian authorities said on Monday there had been heavy fighting between security forces and Islamist militants in a remote part of the northeast, but there was no confirmation of reports from a local official that 185 people had been killed.

Fighting erupted on Thursday in Baga, a fishing town in Borno state on the shores of Lake Chad, by the Chadian border -- an area officials say is a stronghold for Islamist fighters and a smuggling point for weapons from across the Sahara.

Defense spokesman Brigadier General Chris Olukolade said Nigerian forces had exchanged fire with militants, killing 25 of them, while only one soldier was killed.

Many hundreds have died in the rebellion by Boko Haram, a movement loosely modeled on the Afghan Taliban that is seen as the number one security threat to Africa's top energy producer.

A local community representative had put the death toll at 185, Umar Gusau, spokesman for Borno state which administers the area, said after visiting the town with a delegation on Sunday.

"For now, we don't have a very good basis for the figure," Gusau said. "These people say ... they have buried them. From my experience, most times residents exaggerate figures."

He said since they had buried the victims quickly, in line with the Muslim custom, authorities had been unable to count the bodies independently, although an investigation was ongoing.

Sagir Musa, a spokesman for the mixed military and police Joint Task Force (JTF) in Borno state, said by telephone that the death toll had been "terribly inflated" by residents.

The military, which rarely admits killing civilians, is often accused by locals of understating civilian casualties.

A spokesman for U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said he was "shocked and saddened at reports of high numbers of civilians killed", adding that he urged "all concerned to fully respect human rights and safeguard the lives of civilians".

President Goodluck Jonathan's office said he had ordered a full investigation into the report of civilian casualties in Baga.

The statement said his administration would "do everything possible to avoid the killing or injuring of innocent bystanders in security operations against terrorists and insurgents."

The violence came as Jonathan awaits a report from a panel he set up to offer an amnesty to the insurgents if they give up their struggle for an Islamic state.

Boko Haram has so far shown no interest in talks and two mediators have already pulled out, including Islamic cleric Ahmed Datti, the only person whom Boko Haram have said they trusted.

Jonathan, a Christian, has failed to quell the violence through military means and traditional leaders in the mostly Muslim north have put pressure on him to cut a deal.

If 185 people did die in the Baga fighting, it would be the greatest loss of life in the conflict since 186 people were killed in coordinated strikes by Boko Haram fighters in January 2012 in the north's main city of Kano.

Gusau said parts of Baga were badly damaged when he visited it on Sunday, with several houses burned. He said Nigerian soldiers sometimes over-reacted when attacked by Boko Haram gunmen, killing many in retaliation.

Immigration bill could fix some Boston security issues: official

By Richard Cowan

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A top Obama administration official said on Tuesday that an immigration bill starting to move through Congress would fix some border control weaknesses that may have contributed to last week's Boston Marathon bombings.

The immigration to the United States of two ethnic Chechen brothers who are suspects in the bombings has become a point of controversy in the early debate over the legislation, with some conservatives saying that Congress should now go slower.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano repeatedly was asked at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing about the Boston violence that killed three and injured more than 250, as the panel was wrapping up its hearings on a comprehensive immigration bill.

Napolitano told the panel that the legislation will "strengthen security at our borders."

But in three hearings held by the committee since the Boston bombings, some Republicans have raised new concerns about the legislation.

"If these two individuals used our immigration system to assist their attacks, it's important to our ongoing discussion," said Senator Charles Grassley, the senior Republican on the panel.

One of the two suspects, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, who was killed last week after a gunfight with police, traveled from the U.S. to Russia in 2012, returning six months later. He and his brother both came to the United States legally a decade ago.

Officials have said that a misspelling of Tsarnaev's name on flight records when departing the United States last year may have contributed to some law enforcement agencies not being alerted to his movements.

CALMING NEW ANXIETIES

"The bill will help with this because it requires that passports be electronically readable as opposed to having manual input," Napolitano testified, adding the legislation "really does a good job of getting human error out of the process."

The bill's supporters also have tried to calm new anxieties over the legislation, arguing that by moving approximately 11 million illegal residents onto a path to citizenship - if they meet certain requirements - law enforcement will be able to learn more about those undocumented people.

"The bipartisan immigration reform proposal introduced last week would enable us to identify and perform criminal background and national security checks on immigrants who are here unlawfully," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said in a letter to Republican Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky.

Paul, who earlier this year expressed support for comprehensive immigration legislation, said on Monday that Congress "should not proceed" until more is known about failures in the immigration system related to the Boston bombing.

The Senate Judiciary Committee plans to spend the month of May debating and voting on panel members' amendments to the immigration bill introduced last week by four Democratic and four Republican senators.

Reid hopes to have the legislation, a top priority of President Barack Obama, ready for a long debate by the full Senate in June.

During Tuesday's Senate hearing, Napolitano heard criticisms from both Democrats and Republicans about specific aspects of the immigration bill that will take center stage in coming weeks.

"I question whether spending billions more on a fence between the United States and Mexico is really the best use of taxpayer dollars as we're furloughing air traffic controllers," said Senator Patrick Leahy, the Democratic chairman of the Judiciary Committee.

Republican Senator John Cornyn of Texas questioned whether the bill's emphasis on tightening border security at major "hot spots" in Arizona and Texas would merely encourage drug cartels and other criminals to shift their activities to border crossings that are monitored less.

Pakistan police defuse 110-pound bomb near Musharraf house

By Mehreen Zahra-Malik

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - Pakistani police said on Tuesday they had defused 50 kg (110 lb) of explosives hidden in a car wired with remote-controlled detonators near the fortified farmhouse where former president Pervez Musharraf is under house arrest.

The discovery added a new sub-plot to the saga of Musharraf's deepening legal woes, which have transfixed Pakistanis unaccustomed to the sight of a once all-powerful military ruler submitting to the will of judges.

"When we checked the car we found explosives," police bomb squad constable Rehmat Ali told Reuters television. "When we unlocked one of the doors we saw a detonator cord."

Ali added that police had discovered several remote-controlled detonators rigged to the explosives, which they disarmed.

There was no immediate word from police on who they suspected might have planted the device.

Pakistan's Taliban movement, which threatened to kill Musharraf shortly before he returned to Pakistan last month after almost four years of self-imposed exile, denied any involvement in the incident.

"We would have sent suicide bombers," Taliban spokesman Ehsanullah Ehsan said.

MADE ENEMIES

Musharraf made many enemies during his stint in power, notably among militant groups who felt betrayed by his decision to align Pakistan with the United States following the September 11, 2001 attacks.

Musharraf had hoped to relaunch his political career by running for a seat in the National Assembly at general elections on May 11, Pakistan's first transition between elected civilian-led governments.

Instead, election officials disqualified him from running and a court ordered he be placed under house arrest last week over allegations he unlawfully ordered the detention of judges during a showdown with the judiciary in 2007.

Police found the explosives several hours after Musharraf made his latest court appearance over separate allegations that he failed to provide adequate security to prevent the 2007 assassination of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto.

Pakistani television broadcast video showing scores of lawyers, who have not forgiven Musharraf for the crackdown he launched on the judiciary, scuffling with supporters of the ex-president after the hearing.

Police arrested Musharraf on Friday, treating Pakistanis to the rare spectacle of a former army commander being humbled by judges in a country where the military has ruled for more than half the years since Pakistan's creation in 1947.

Musharraf's office has dismissed the allegations against him as baseless and politically motivated.

Musharraf, who seized power in a coup in 1999, resigned in 2008 and left Pakistan for residences in London and Dubai.

His legal troubles have provided a stark symbol of the changing balance of power in Pakistan, where the military still retains enormous behind-the-scenes influence but has retreated from the overt meddling and coups of the past.

As You Like It Combines the Bard and Body Language for Comic ...

The Setup:

As You Like It is one of William Shakespeare's most pastoral comedies, with most of the scenes played in the Forest of Arden and with not one, not two, but four intense courtships proceeding apace. While there is a struggle for political power, this is very minor indeed and is settled with an offstage solution shoehorned in at the end. This work is as close to pure entertainment as the bard gets.

The Execution:

The set of the Forest of Arden is simplicity itself: several sets of huge branches tossed together, like oversized pick-up sticks that landed in a tepee formation. Adequate indeed, for "the play's the thing!"

The plot is boy gets girl, after overcoming obstacles, but the master playwright injects so much wit in the obstacles, and so much variety in the characterizations, that none of the courtships are at all repetitive. The prime lovers are Rosalind (Shannon Hill) and Orlando (Martel Manning), and Manning is a find indeed, as he brings to the party masculine charm, a robust physique and the grace in movement of a dancer, creating a vibrant character and anchoring the comedy. Hill, who was emotionally powerful in The Crucible last year, contributes here a perky, cheerful persona, and carries the narrative with a sprightly mien, but the interpretation lacks depth and variety, and her delivery of the brief epilogue disappointed.

Tim Sailer as Touchstone is brilliant, enhancing the wit with a romantic spring in his walk. One of the most admirable directorial touches is the rich body language of Sailer and the other actors; director Sara Becker understands that what one sees is more important than what one hears, and it pays off beautifully. The object of Touchstone's intended lust is the rural Audrey, played with seductive restraint by the beautiful and voluptuous Suzelle Palacios.

Rosalind in the forest is disguised as a man, and the shepherdess Phebe (Kayla Brown) falls for "him," rejecting her pursuing swain Silvius (Colin David) until the masquerade is revealed. Both Brown and David are excellent, and capture the lighthearted passion of the comedy. David Huyhn plays Oliver, who enters as a villain but repents in time to wed Celia (Christine Arnold). Arnold has the grace of a duke's daughter, as intended, and an easy charm. I wondered if Oliver might be less menacing early on, less of a heavy and more nuanced, so that the repentance and instant wedding become easier to accept.

Joshua Kyle Hoppe is captivating as the melancholy Jaques, with quicksilver gestures and an interesting presence. Jaques's probing intellect and philosophical bent serve as contrast to the rambunctious cavorting of the hormonal youths. This is a large cast, and they work well together, creating a unified ensemble.

Shakespeare here "punks" his audience, turning convention on its head. Whereas courtiers usually speak verse and the rurals prose, it is reversed here, a clear sign that the goal is simply "Entertainment tonight!"

Director Becker delivers on this. I would say Beckers delivers a "rollicking good time," but the pace would have to be picked up a bit to merit "rollicking." This is definitely a date play, especially if you are trying to persuade her of the rich rewards of love at first sight, which we have here in spades.

The Verdict:

A fun-filled event, channeling love in a variety of forms, and embellished with richly comic body language that enhances the comedy enormously.

The Importance of Relationship Building: Negotiating in China | The ...

As a general rule, when you are dealing with Chinese business people it is best to hire someone with some sort of ties to them so that you can gain some leverage into their social network. A large part of the Chinese society is centered around guanxi, which is the concept of building personal relationship with people that you can give and receive special favors from. As an outsider you are immediately at a disadvantage unless you can increase the level of trust which is ultimately at the heart of this issue.

Cultivating guanxi with your potential business partners in China can be helped along by hiring people that are already close to them as part of your team, or by developing relationships with some of their key contacts. This is not uncommon to the way that business is conducted throughout the world but in China the intensity of this practice is greater. The sense of guanxi is a powerful tool that you can leverage by spending time cultivating the key relationships with all of the business people that you need to know.

The normal business practices aside, the Chinese will trust you more once you have cultivated the relationship with them rather than just signing a binding contract. This method continues due to the fact that China?s legal system in underdeveloped and under-enforced. Once you have gained the trust through guanxi your business interactions will become a lot easier as they will go above and beyond to help you and your business. Don?t forget that they will also expect something in return for any favors that they provide for you.

Just as the trust of a handshake has been replaced with a mountain of paperwork in the western business world, China?s legal system is improving. But the speed at which they are improving will leave plenty of time for the concept of guanxi to infiltrate another generation or two. Until the legal reform makes this kind of inner circle business relationships more flexible and open, you have to play by the rules that are dictated. Trust is the lynch pin that can expedite and alleviate all of your business transactions throughout the world, but in China you need to manage your network and ensure that you have multiple guanxi links to your business partners to maintain a close bond. Keep in mind that any favors that you receive, even if you didn?t ask for them, have to be reciprocated to maintain the relationships.

What are you think about it? Please ?leave a response in comment?.

Some fliers headed to Los Angeles International Airport were met with delays yesterday on the first day of staffing cuts for air traffic controllers because of government spending reductions. Budget cuts that kicked in last month forced the FAA to give controllers extra days off. Commercial airline flights moved smoothly throughout most of the country on Sunday, April 21, 2013, the first day air traffic controllers were subject to furloughs resulting from government spending cuts, though some delays appeared in the late evening in and around New York. (AP Photo/Damian Dovarganes)

(AP) ? Flight delays piled up across the country Monday as thousands of air traffic controllers began taking unpaid days off because of federal budget cuts, providing the most visible impact yet of Congress and the White House's failure to agree on a long-term deficit-reduction plan.

The Federal Aviation Administration kept planes on the ground because there weren't enough controllers to monitor busy air corridors. Cascading delays held up flights at some of nation's busiest airports, including New York, Baltimore and Washington. Many operations were more than two hours behind schedule.

At one point, the delays were so bad that passengers on several Washington-New York shuttle flights could have reached their destination faster by taking the train.

Nearly a third of flights at New York's LaGuardia airport scheduled to take off before 3 p.m. were delayed 15 minutes or more, according to flight-tracking service FlightAware. Last Monday, just 6 percent of LaGuardia's flights were delayed.

The situation was similar at Washington's Reagan National Airport, in Newark, N.J., and in Philadelphia, with roughly 20 percent of flights delayed.

At airports, Monday is typically one of the busiest days, when many high-paying business travelers depart for a week on the road. The FAA's controller cuts ? a 10 percent reduction of its staff ? went into effect Sunday. The full force was not felt until Monday morning.

Travel writer Tim Leffel had just boarded a US Airways plane from Charlotte, N.C., to Tampa, when the flight crew had an announcement.

"They said: 'The weather's fine, but there aren't enough air traffic controllers,'" Leffel said. Passengers were asked to head back into the terminal. "People were just kind of rolling their eyes."

His flight landed one hour and 13 minutes late.

One thing working in fliers' favor Monday was relatively good weather at most major airports. A few wind gusts in New York, snow in Denver and thunderstorms in Miami added to some delays, but generally there were clear skies and no major storms.

However, the furloughs will continue for months, raising the risk of a turbulent summer travel season. And the lack of controllers could exacerbate weather problems, especially spring and summer thunderstorms.

There's no way for passengers to tell in advance which airport or flights will experience delays.

FAA officials have said they have no choice but to furlough all 47,000 agency employees ? including nearly 15,000 controllers ? because the agency's budget is dominated by salaries. Each employee will lose one day of work every other week. The FAA has said that planes will have to take off and land less frequently, so as not to overload the remaining controllers on duty.

Critics have said the FAA could reduce its budget in other spots that wouldn't delay travelers.

"There's a lot finger-pointing going on, but the simple truth is that it is Congress's job to fix this," said Rep. Rick Larsen, a Washington Democrat and member of the House aviation panel. "Flight delays are just the latest example of how the sequester is damaging the economy and hurting families across the country."

Some travel groups have warned that the disruptions could hurt the economy.

"If these disruptions unfold as predicted, business travelers will stay home, severely impacting not only the travel industry but the economy overall," the Global Business Travel Association warned the head of the FAA in a letter Friday.

Deborah Seymour was one of the first fliers to face the headaches. She was supposed to fly Sunday night from Los Angles to Tucson, Ariz. First her 9:55 p.m. flight was delayed for four hours. Then at 2 a.m., Southwest Airlines canceled it.

"It's pretty discouraging that Congress can't get it together, and now it's reached the point that we can't get on an airplane and fly," Seymour said.

On some routes Monday, it was actually faster to take ground transportation. The 8 a.m. US Airways shuttle from Washington to New York pushed back from the gate six minutes early but didn't take off until almost 10 a.m.

The plane landed at 10:48 a.m. ? more than two and a half hours late. If travelers instead took Amtrak's 8 a.m. Acela Express train from Washington, they arrived in New York at 10:42 a.m. ? four minutes early.

Normally, there are 10 air traffic controllers at a regional facility handling arrivals for Los Angeles International Airport. On Sunday night, there were just seven, according to Mike Foote, a local union president with the National Air Traffic Controllers Association. A low layer of clouds late compounded the situation.

In such weather, two controllers do nothing but watch planes as they descend below 15,000 feet to ensure they don't veer off course. That allows 68 to 70 planes to land each hour. Because of the furloughs, there were no controllers to do that Sunday, dropping the arrival rate to 42 planes an hour, Foote said.

United Airlines said there were "alarming pockets" of delays and warned that if a solution isn't found, the problem could "affect air travel reliability for our customers."

Delta Air Lines cautioned travelers to expect delays in New York, Philadelphia, Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego.

Many flights heading to Florida were seeing delays of up to an hour. By late Monday, delays into Los Angeles were expected to average three hours.

Having just one fewer controller to handle arrivals to Newark Liberty International Airport can result in the airport being unable to use a relief runway to handle peak traffic, reducing arrivals by about 15 percent, said Dean Iacopelli, a union official at an FAA regional facility for New York's airports.

"It is not just telling one out of 10 people to stay home and so one out of 10 planes get delayed. It's much more complicated that," Iacopelli said.

Prior to the furloughs, if a controller called in sick, there were enough people to take on the extra work, Iacopelli said, or somebody could be asked to work overtime. Now that isn't possible.

The FAA has also furloughed other critical employees, including airline and airport safety inspectors.

In a letter to the FAA Friday, Delta general counsel Ben Hirst asked the agency to reconsider the furloughs, saying it could make the cuts elsewhere and transfer funds from "non-safety activities" to support the FAA's "core mission of efficiently managing the nation's airspace."

Two airline trade associations and the nation's largest pilots union filed a lawsuit Friday asking the U.S. Court of Appeals to halt the furloughs. No hearing date has been set.

The two airline associations ? Airlines for America, which represents major carriers, and the Regional Airline Association ? are asking the court to place a moratorium on enforcement of the Department of Transportation's three-hour limit on the length of time airlines can keep passengers waiting inside planes on the tarmac without giving them the opportunity to return to a terminal.

Airlines can be fined as much as $27,500 per passenger for violating the limit. The Transportation Department said it is reviewing the industry's request.

Quantcast Passes $100M Run-Rate, Lands Senior Hires As Ads Business Booms

feldman-konrad-quantcast_largeOnline display advertising has been a murky business -- who is actually viewing all those ads, and do those ads make a difference to them? Quantcast has been quietly trying to solve this problem since 2006, and now it's starting to break out. I'm hearing from a reliable industry source that it has been EBITDA-profitable for a couple years, and reached a $100 million revenue run-rate six months ago. That number, I'm told, should go significantly above that by the end of 2013.

Sarah Dille: Dear Teachers: Let's Not Be the Demise of Our Own Profession

I am a clich?; I was born a teacher. A school photographer first snapped my photo when I was six months old, sitting on the lap of my very proud father, a kindergarten teacher who had taken me along for his school photo. I used to line my dolls up to teach them lessons from workbooks my dad's class had finished with and when my younger brother was old enough to comply and not quite old enough to protest, I sat him down in my class and tutored him from math and reading workbooks. My mother became an elementary school teacher when I was in middle school, though she had certainly been a teacher long before that. And almost every one of my aunts and uncles was a teacher or a principal. Little did my family know that they would not only mold me into a life-long learner, but into a life-long teacher as well.

See, it's true; I am that clich? -- the teacher who knew all along that the classroom is where she was meant to be. There have been, however, a few times in my life that I've tried to resist the lure of the classroom, where I've tried to deny that teaching is a part of my blood. I thought about law school, working for a law firm in college for a while. I've thought about entertaining my dreams of making a living from setting words on a page -- being a writer full time and not as an additional part of my life. But nothing else feels quite like the ground under my feet in my classroom. Nothing else fulfills me and challenges me quite like the art of teaching.

Lately I've wondered if I'd be here, standing in front of a room of students, challenging them to write and think and create if I knew what I know now. If I was making my decision in the culture of viral posts warning young people not to teach, claiming our profession no longer even exists.

I read these posts and I'm saddened. I'm saddened and disheartened and, really, when it gets down to it, I'm mad. I'm mad that other teachers are using their voices to warn off others, to claim that things are so dire it's time for all of us to jump ship. Because in my eyes, it's time to bring in more bright young people with a passion for learning, with a drive to do the real hard work that teaching requires. In my eyes all of the problems running rampant in our educational system signal a need for new blood, for new ideas, for a resurgence of the importance of what I do in room 265 every day.

On one hand, I identify with way too much of what these other teachers claim. But as someone who has taught for 13 years, I don't at all have the same feelings that Randy Turner has after working as a teacher for 14. Is it a bad time for education? Yes. Are there bad decisions being made? Yes. Is testing culture sucking the life-blood out of what a true education should be? Yes. But I say that is all the more reason that we need young people to make the hard choice to be teachers. How else will we ever guarantee that this all changes? That my children and your children won't go to school in this breaking system. We need young teachers more than ever perhaps because of all that he points out, not despite it.

In my department this year I have six teachers with fewer than five years experience. Some are brand new and others are a few years in. Each one of them has been met head on with the struggles of balancing learning and testing, figuring out how to manage students in a culture that is sometimes not supportive. They have seen first-hand the truth of what Randy Turner lays out in his argument. But they are creative and intelligent and hard-working. They challenge students to think, to create, to see the value in what they are learning. The new teachers around me are certainly not the types to fall victim to a world of pressures to conform to a new norm that none of them are comfortable with. They, instead, are the future leaders of a profession that cannot die. A profession that can only be saved by intelligent, stubborn, creative people who, at heart, are teachers. The new teachers around me? They are aware of their own power.

So my message to young people deciding whether to teach is this: Come help us take back our profession. Don't give in to the rhetoric warning you against stepping into a classroom. Because changing all of this? It starts with us. It starts with our voices and our ideas and our power. It starts with good teaching in our classrooms, with strong relationships with our students, with our stubborn cry to make this system better. It starts with teachers.

Bob Perry, megadonor behind 'swift boat' ads, dies

Bob Perry donated over $75 million dollars to political causes, including bankrolling the 'swift boat' attack ads against John Kerry in the 2004 presidential race.

Once in a rare interview, the Texas tycoon who gave at least $75 million in political contributions over his lifetime argued that writing big checks didn't buy big influence.

"It is my view that government is not owned by anyone, least of all wealthy contributors," Bob Perry told the Houston Chronicle, his hometown newspaper, in 2002.

Perry was remembered Monday by friends and foes alike for his prolific bankrolling that gave him both stature and notoriety. Republicans chiefly benefited from the wealthy Houston homebuilder, who became a titan of spending in modern American politics.

Perry died at age 80 Saturday night "peacefully in his sleep," said former Texas state Rep. Neal Jones, a close family friend. Public word of his death didn't spread until late the next day ? perhaps a final victory for Perry and his aversion to the spotlight. He rarely spoke to the press, skipped fancy fundraisers and was a mystery to even some of his benefactors.

That top was blown off that low profile in 2004 when Perry spent $4.4 million financing the famous 2004 Swift Boat Veterans campaign against Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry, which remains among the most famous political television ads in history.

Critics sought to highlight the buying power Perry's largesse afforded ? particularly as the issue of campaign finance and the role of big money came before the U.S. Supreme Court in the 2000s and vaulted to new levels of public consciousness.

Perry's supporters saw him as a quiet champion of conservative causes who wasn't merely an ideologue.

"His astonishing success story as a businessman serves as an inspiration to anyone who ever dreamed of bigger things, and his selfless dedication to the people and causes he believed in serves as an inspiration to anyone who has ever felt the call to get involved," said Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who is of no relation and has received reliable financial support from Bob Perry.

Bob Perry was a fixture of GOP fundraising in Texas ? and nationally ? dating back to former President George W. Bush's Texas gubernatorial races in the mid-1990s.
