Pakistani minister urges reopening border to NATO (AP)

ISLAMABAD ? Pakistan's defense minister said Tuesday that the country should reopen its Afghan border crossings to NATO troop supplies after negotiating a better deal with the coalition.

Pakistan closed the crossings over two months ago in response to American airstrikes that accidentally killed 24 Pakistani soldiers at two Afghan border posts. The closure has forced the United States to spend six times as much money to send supplies to Afghanistan through alternative routes.

Pakistani Defense Minister Ahmad Mukhtar told the private Geo TV that the government should negotiate new "terms and conditions" with NATO, then reopen the border.

He did not provide specific details. But other Pakistani officials have suggested that the government levy additional fees on the coalition for using the route since the heavy trucks cause damage to the roads.

Pakistan's parliament is expected to vote on a revised framework for relations with the U.S. in mid-February that could pave the way for the government to reopen the supply line.

Pakistani Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar said last week that she didn't think it would be much of a problem to reopen the route after the parliament vote.

The defense minister echoed this view, saying "I think the people who are deciding, who are giving recommendations, will make the right decision."

For most of the 10-year war in Afghanistan, 90 percent of supplies shipped to coalition forces came through Pakistan, via the port of Karachi. But over the past three years, NATO has increased its road and rail shipments through an alternate route that runs through Russia and Central Asia. The northern route was longer and more expensive, but provided a hedge against the riskier Pakistan route.

Before the accidental American airstrikes on Nov. 26, about 30 percent of non-lethal supplies for U.S. and coalition troops in Afghanistan traveled through Pakistan.

The U.S. has since increased the amount of supplies running through the northern route, but this has cost it a lot more money. Pentagon figures provided to the AP show it is now costing about $104 million per month to send supplies. That is $87 million more per month than when the cargo moved through Pakistan.

Ghana, Mali scrape through to African Cup semis

FRANCEVILLE, Gabon (AP) -Ghana and Mali scraped through to the African Cup of Nations semifinals on Sunday, as Tunisia and Gabon fell in agonizing fashion.

Ghana beat Tunisia 2-1 in extra time after goalkeeper Aymen Mathlouthi's blunder gifted the Black Stars a 101st-minute winner in a tense, bad tempered quarterfinal at Stade de Franceville that the Tunisians had controlled before Mathlouthi's decisive error.

Mali beat co-host Gabon 5-4 in a penalty shootout in the quarterfinal in Libreville after they were level at 1-1 at the end of 120 minutes.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Gabon's hero of the group stage, missed the decisive spot kick and dissolved into tears in the middle of a huddle of players as the home team's tournament ended in bitter disappointment.

Gabon won its first three games and was six minutes away from a first appearance in the semifinals, only for Cheick Diabate to equalize in the 84th and give Mali the chance to steal victory and a place in the last four in the shootout.

Ghana faces Zambia and Mali plays Ivory Coast in Wednesday's semifinals, leaving top-ranked African teams and tournament favorites Ghana and Ivory Coast still on course to meet in the Feb. 12 final.

"I think we were lucky there," Ghana striker Asamoah Gyan said after his team pounced on Mathlouthi's mistake. "You know in football anything can happen, luck also counts and you see the error the keeper made. I wouldn't blame him, but it happens in football."

Eric Mouloungui scored for Gabon from close-range after Aubameyang's cutback in the 55th minute at Stade de l'Amitie to seemingly continue a dream African Cup for the co-host.

But Diabate turned cleverly and forced his late shot under goalkeeper Didier Ovono to keep a stubborn Mali team alive at the tournament.

Aubameyang, who had also hit the post in normal time, then had his penalty saved by Soumaila Diakite in a gut-wrenching end for the co-host, allowing Mali captain Seydou Keita to step up and send his team through and Gabon out.

Mali's players, led by Keita, celebrated wildly on the running track around the field as the weeping Aubameyang was consoled by team mates and the previously rowdy, joyous Libreville crowd was silenced for the first time in two weeks.

At Franceville, the sparse groups of local supporters spent the buildup to the Ghana-Tunisia quarterfinal with their backs to the field watching the live broadcast of Gabon's game on giant TV screens at the stadium.

The crowd danced and sang at Stade de Franceville and a group of ball boys ran up and down behind one goal doing back flips and somersaults when Gabon took the lead.

Ghana led Tunisia in the 10th minute as John Mensah's rollercoaster ride of a tournament continued when he headed in at the far post from an Andre Ayew corner having scored and been sent off in his country's first game. He later left the field injured.

Saber Khalifa put Tunisia level, but despite holding the upper hand for large parts of the game the North Africans were undone by Mathlouthi's extra-time howler, which allowed Ayew to side foot into an empty net and Ghana to progress.

"It's a pity it ended like this for us," said Mathlouthi, who ironically won the game's fair play award. "It was my fault on every level."

Neither team deserved a fair play award as the match - which was already physical - descended into an ugly end when Tunisia's Aymen Abdennour was sent off for elbowing Ayew, leading to a shoving match near the corner flag between both sets of players.

Issam Jemaa made two reckless challenges in quick succession that went unpunished and Ghana's defense also mercilessly scythed down Youssef Msakni in the final minutes.

"They made a game look like a war," Ghana assistant coach Kwesi Appiah said.

Censors MIA on M.I.A.'s finger flip

NEW YORK (AP) ? Less than a second stood between British singer M.I.A. giving the finger to 114 million people watching the Super Bowl halftime show and no one noticing at all.

That's how close NBC censors came to preventing the gesture from being seen Sunday night, but the Super Bowl instead wound up with another entertainment oops moment. The gesture swept across social media, showing up in screen grabs and video, reminding everyone of Janet Jackson's infamous wardrobe malfunction in 2004 when a nipple was exposed ever so briefly to a Super Bowl audience.

Both NBC and the NFL, which puts on the halftime show, apologized.

M.I.A.'s record label said Monday it had no comment and her Twitter account was silent since noting she was in Lucas Oil Stadium with Madonna. And the Material Girl, who invited M.I.A. to appear during her performance of "Give Me All Your Luvin'," had no immediate comment.

The Nielsen Co. said that 114 million people watched Madonna's halftime show, even more than the average of 111.3 million who watched the game. It was the most-watched halftime entertainment show ever.

The gesture was "so shocking that I had no idea she even did it until NBC issued an apology for it," wrote Time magazine TV critic James Poniewozik on his blog.

The digital video recorder maker Tivo said there were no appreciable bumps in playbacks at the time of M.I.A.'s gesture, meaning many people either didn't see it or shrugged it off. Tivo has some 2 million customers in the U.S., said Tara Maitra, the company's senior vice president.

"I never even noticed," said Joan Kistner, a marketer from Chicago who watched the game. "It wasn't until this morning when I heard the news" and so many people were talking about it that she knew it happened.

"I don't know why they glorify bad behavior," Kistner said. "Some things should just be left alone. I really think she owes Madonna, who obviously wanted her to be part of the show, an apology."

The NFL and NBC should take steps to hold people accountable for their actions, said Tim Winter, president of the Parents Television Council.

"Most families would agree that the middle finger aimed directly at them is not appropriate, especially during the most-watched television event of the year," Winter said.

Back in M.I.A.'s native Britain, the London Times noted that while all eyes may have been on Madonna at halftime, "it was the extended middle finger of the British hip-hop star M.I.A. that caused the most controversy."

The Guardian wondered whether anyone would really be outraged.

"You'd be forgiven for not having a coronary over the fact M.I.A. gave Super Bowl viewers the finger during her halftime guest spot with Madonna," the newspaper wrote in its music blog. "For most fans, it was probably more shocking to see M.I.A. performing a rehearsed dance routine than flipping the bird."

Indeed, M.I.A. is provocative and an artist taking advantage of all those TV viewers might not be all that surprising. Still, host Gretchen Carlson on Fox News Channel's "Fox & Friends" urged M.I.A. to "get a life" and culture vulture Perez Hilton tweeted: "Think she'll ever be invited on live TV again?"

Jackson's incident raised a storm of controversy and put CBS in hot water with the Federal Communications Commission amid questions about the responsibility of TV networks to police their airwaves. The network and FCC are still fighting over whether CBS should pay a $550,000 fine.

One person who didn't miss M.I.A.'s message was Marlee Matlin. The actress, who is deaf, tweeted: "When we expected some beautiful sign language during the (hash)SuperBowl National Anthem, we got instead a "sign" during M.I.A.'s rap. Ahem."
