Gay rights activists plan Chick-fil-A 'Kiss In'

(AP) ? Gay rights activists and other supporters of marriage equality planned a national "Kiss In" at Chick-fil-A restaurants Friday to protest the fast-food chain owners' opposition to same-sex unions.

Participants are encouraged to come to the fast-food chains and kiss a fellow demonstrator of the same sex. One organizer, Carly McGehee of Dallas, said she hopes the event helps gay youths "who feel isolated and are victims of bullying."

"Without question, Dan Cathy has every right to voice his opinions and beliefs," Herndon Graddick, president of the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, said in a statement.

"But he should meet and get to know the people that he's speaking out against - the people who are harmed by his company's multi-million dollar donations to anti-gay hate groups working to hurt everyday LGBT Americans and break apart loving families," Graddick said.

"LGBT" is an abbreviation for "lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender."

The gatherings come two days after hundreds of thousands of customers, many of them conservative Christians, recognized "Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day" at more than 1,600 locations.

The company said in a statement the turnout Wednesday made for "an unprecedented day," although it says it doesn't release exact sales numbers.

"The Chick-fil-A culture and 66-year-old service tradition in our restaurants is to treat every person with honor, dignity and respect - regardless of their belief, race, creed, sexual orientation or gender," the statement said.

Chick-fil-A president Dan Cathy stirred the controversy when he told a religious publication last month that the company was "guilty as charged" for backing "the biblical definition of a family."

In a later radio interview, Cathy said: "I think we are inviting God's judgment on our nation when we shake our fist at him and say, 'We know better than you as to what constitutes a marriage.'"

The Southern Baptist Cathy family has long been known for using biblical principles to operate its business, including never opening the company's stores on Sundays.

How Did Humans End Up In The Americas?

Much has been written about the Spanish colonization of the Americas (and Mexico in particular) starting in the 16th century. But the fact that there were humans on the western continent at all is a feat to consider. How, when, and why humans came to the Americas has been a source of longtime interest and debate.

Science likes a good clean story where all the evidence lines up; for archaeologists, the story often requires a lot of guesswork and modification as new puzzle pieces emerge. The Olmecs are assumed to be the first advanced civilization in Mesoamerica, but the Western Mexico shaft tomb tradition contains evidence that there may have been cultures which pre-date them by several centuries. The most famous theory can still be wrong, and all it takes is new evidence.

It's widely accepted that anatomically modern humans arose in Africa, evolving over millions of years into bipedal, large-brained primates with complex social structures and the capacity for abstract thought. But the exact details of how humans got onto the American continents are unknown; there are several excellent theories, but conflicting research and proofs make it difficult to say for sure. Researchers are able to track DNA markers of ancient fossils and trace a rough path of human migration; but the pattern, timing, and origin of the settlement is unclear.

We do know that anatomically modern Homo sapiens followed herds of animals--mastodons, mammoths, and Ice-Age deer--across Asia and into eastern Siberia, at the very edge of modern-day Russia. The traditional Beringia Theory of human migration postulates that Siberia and Alaska were connected by a land bridge across the Bering Strait between 50,000 and 10,000 years ago; the 1,000-mile wide bridge allowed nomadic humans to cross over into the Americas on foot. From there, humans spread out into the new land, eventually populating both North and South America; when the sea level rose at the end of the last ice age, the continents were effectively cut off from one another.

The proof of the Bering Strait migration comes from the fossilized remnants of big game hunters, who left behind very distinct stone projectile points that are called Clovis points. These bifurcated, fluted stone weapons were first found in New Mexico in the 1920s, and carbon dating put the Clovis culture in America between 11,050 and 10,800 years ago. They were the oldest human-made artifacts yet found on the continent, and the Clovis people were assumed to be the first human inhabitants of the Americas.

But there are significant issues with the so-called "Clovis first" hypothesis, and they are large enough to force scientists to reconsider their Beringia Theory. First of all, 11,000 years is a very short time span to populate an entire hemisphere. Furthermore, archaeological sites in South America have yielded artifacts which pre-date the Clovis points by at least 1,000 years. This includes the Monte Verde site in Chile, the Topper Archaeological site in South Carolina, and many others. While the Bering Land Bridge hypothesis has some solid genetic evidence behind it, some of the data just doesn't add up. This has led to some highly creative alternate theories about how humans first made it into the Americas to become the Aztecs, Maya, Olmecs, and other cultures.

Northwest earthquake risk in U.S. looms large: 40% chance of major earthquake within 50 years

ScienceDaily (Aug. 1, 2012) ? A comprehensive analysis of the Cascadia Subduction Zone off the Pacific Northwest coast confirms that the region has had numerous earthquakes over the past 10,000 years, and suggests that the southern Oregon coast may be most vulnerable based on recurrence frequency.

Written by researchers at Oregon State University, and published online by the U.S. Geological Survey, the study concludes that there is a 40 percent chance of a major earthquake in the Coos Bay, Ore., region during the next 50 years. And that earthquake could approach the intensity of the Tohoku quake that devastated Japan in March of 2011.

"The southern margin of Cascadia has a much higher recurrence level for major earthquakes than the northern end and, frankly, it is overdue for a rupture," said Chris Goldfinger, a professor in OSU's College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences and lead author of the study. "That doesn't mean that an earthquake couldn't strike first along the northern half, from Newport, Ore., to Vancouver Island.

"But major earthquakes tend to strike more frequently along the southern end -- every 240 years or so -- and it has been longer than that since it last happened," Goldfinger added. "The probability for an earthquake on the southern part of the fault is more than double that of the northern end."

The publication of the peer-reviewed analysis may do more than raise awareness of earthquake hazards and risks, experts say. The actuarial table and history of earthquake strength and frequency may eventually lead to an update in the state's building codes.

"We are considering the work of Goldfinger, et al, in the update of the National Seismic Hazard Maps, which are the basis for seismic design provisions in building codes and other earthquake risk-mitigation measures," said Art Frankel, who has dual appointments with the U.S. Geological Survey and the University of Washington.

The Goldfinger-led study took four years to complete and is based on 13 years of research. At 184 pages, it is the most comprehensive overview ever written of the Cascadia Subduction Zone, a region off the Northwest coast where the Juan de Fuca tectonic plate is being subducted beneath the continent. Once thought to be a continuous fault line, Cascadia is now known to be at least partially segmented.

This segmentation is reflected in the region's earthquake history, Goldfinger noted.

"Over the past 10,000 years, there have been 19 earthquakes that extended along most of the margin, stretching from southern Vancouver Island to the Oregon-California border," Goldfinger noted. "These would typically be of a magnitude from about 8.7 to 9.2 -- really huge earthquakes.

"We've also determined that there have been 22 additional earthquakes that involved just the southern end of the fault," he added. "We are assuming that these are slightly smaller -- more like 8.0 -- but not necessarily. They were still very large earthquakes that if they happened today could have a devastating impact."

The clock is ticking on when a major earthquake will next strike, said Jay Patton, an OSU doctoral student who is a co-author on the study.

"By the year 2060, if we have not had an earthquake, we will have exceeded 85 percent of all the known intervals of earthquake recurrence in 10,000 years," Patton said. "The interval between earthquakes ranges from a few decades to thousands of years. But we already have exceeded about three-fourths of them."

The last mega-earthquake to strike the Pacific Northwest occurred on Jan. 26, 1700. Researchers know this, Goldfinger said, because written records in Japan document how an ensuing tsunami destroyed that year's rice crop stored in warehouses.

How scientists document the earthquake history of the Cascadia Subduction Zone is fascinating. When a major offshore earthquake occurs, Goldfinger says, the disturbance causes mud and sand to begin streaming down the continental margins and into the undersea canyons. Coarse sediments called turbidites run out onto the abyssal plain; these sediments stand out distinctly from the fine particulate matter that accumulates on a regular basis between major tectonic events.

By dating the fine particles through carbon-14 analysis and other methods, Goldfinger and colleagues can estimate with a great deal of accuracy when major earthquakes have occurred over the past 10,000 years.

Going back further than 10,000 years has been difficult because the sea level used to be lower and West Coast rivers emptied directly into offshore canyons. Because of that, it is difficult to distinguish between storm debris and earthquake turbidites.

"The turbidite data matches up almost perfectly with the tsunami record that goes back about 3,500 years," Goldfinger said. "Tsunamis don't always leave a signature, but those that do through coastal subsidence or marsh deposits coincide quite well with the earthquake history."

With the likelihood of a major earthquake and possible tsunami looming, coastal leaders and residents face the unenviable task of how to prepare for such events. Patrick Corcoran, a hazards outreach specialist with OSU's Sea Grant Extension program, says West Coast residents need to align their behavior with this kind of research.

"Now that we understand our vulnerability to mega-quakes and tsunamis, we need to develop a culture that is prepared at a level commensurate with the risk," Corcoran said. "Unlike Japan, which has frequent earthquakes and thus is more culturally prepared for them, we in the Pacific Northwest have not had a mega-quake since European settlement. And since we have no culture of earthquakes, we have no culture of preparedness.

"The research, though, is compelling," he added. "It clearly shows that our region has a long history of these events, and the single most important thing we can do is begin 'expecting' a mega-quake, then we can't help but start preparing for it."

Dell B1160w Wireless Mono Laser Printer

It takes only a glance at the Dell B1160w Wireless Mono Laser Printer to peg it as a personal printer. Smaller than an inkjet, it won't take up much room on your desk, and even though it offers Wi-Fi, its 150-sheet paper tray limits its usefulness as a shared printer, even in a micro office. As a personal printer in any size office, however, or a shared printer in a micro office with extremely light-duty print needs, it can potentially be a good fit.

Measuring just 7.0 by 13.0 by 8.5 inches (HWD) and weighing in at 8 pounds 13 ounces complete with toner, the B1160w is both smaller and lighter than the similarly priced Editors' Choice Brother HL-2240 . Much of the HL-2240's extra size comes from its better paper handling, including a 100-sheet larger paper capacity plus a manual feed that the B1160w lacks. The trade off is that the HL-2240 doesn't include Wi-Fi .

In that context, it's worth mentioning that if you don't need Wi-Fi, but also don't need the HL-2240's paper handling, you can save a few dollars by getting the Dell B1160 Mono Laser Printer ($99.99 direct), which also lacks Wi-Fi. According to Dell the B1160 and B1160w are otherwise identical, so all the comments in this review should apply to it as well.

Speed, Quality, and Other Issues
For my tests, I connected the B1160w by USB cable and installed it on a system running Windows Vista. Setup was standard fare.

Dell B1160w Wireless Mono Laser Printer

On our business applications suite, I timed the printer (using QualityLogic's hardware and software for timing) at an effective 7.3 pages per minute (ppm), which is a reasonable speed for a personal printer. As a point of reference, the directly competitive Samsung ML-2165W came in at 7.6 ppm. However, both the Dell and Samsung printers are significantly slower than the Brother HL-2240, at 11.4 ppm.

The B1160w does a little better on output quality than speed, but not by a lot. Here again, it's good enough for most purposes, but not impressive. Text quality is at the low end of the range where the vast majority of mono lasers fall. It's easily good enough for most business purposes, but well short of what you'd want for serious desktop publishing.

Graphics quality is at the high end of the range for mono lasers, making the output easily good enough for most business purposes, including PowerPoint handouts and the like. Depending on your level of perfectionism, you might even consider the quality suitable for graphics in, say, a business report that needs to look fully professional. Photo quality is at the high end of the tight range that includes most mono lasers, making it good enough to print Web pages with photos and even print photos in client newsletters or the like.

One potential issue for the B1160w is its running cost. The claimed 4 cents per page is roughly double the cost for the HL-2240. How much of an issue this is will depend on how much you print. But keep in mind that after just 5,000 pages, a two cent per page difference adds up to $100.

The best argument for choosing the Dell B1160w Wireless Mono Laser Printer is that you need both Wi-Fi and the small size. If you don't need either, the HL-2240 offers faster speed, better paper handing, and a lower cost per page. If you need both features, however, and need the small size in particular, because you don't have much room for a printer, the Dell B1160w Wireless Mono Laser Printer can not only serve nicely, it may be literally the better fit.
