Charlotte?s pride: Best spots for visitors during the DNC

It starts like a riddle: Why do people only visit Charlotte once? asks resident Tyler Graf.

"Because they usually end up moving there right after," he answers. "With that perfect mix of Southern hospitality and big-city living, Charlotte is a great place to live or just to visit."

What is the lure? Is it the growing, burgeoning business metropolis that now tops the scales at 750,000 residents? The sports hotbed of NFL football, NBA basketball and NASCAR? The diversity of cultures and cuisine? The numerous outdoor recreational opportunities?

Ahead of next week's Democratic National Convention, which is expected to draw tens of thousands of visitors, Yahoo! News asked Charlotte-area residents to boast about the Queen City: Why does it appeal to residents and visitors? What are the best places to eat, drink and party? Here's a sampling of what they wrote.

Business swagger, cultural pride

"Charlotte feels like it is built from the large steel structures of finance -- Bank of America and Wells Fargo, to name two locals -- but there is so much more here than steel structures. Charlotte, simply, is where you can find what you want -- from our uptown dining with live jazz to leisure strolls through our beautiful art galleries. There is culture. There is food. There is leisure. Charlotte has it all." -- Mica Gadhia

"I wouldn't be a true Charlottean if I didn't mention that Charlotte is the biggest banking capital in the United States, outside of New York. With the main headquarters of Bank of America and the regional East Coast headquarters for Wells Fargo, serious business goes on around here. The Charlotte Metro is also home to the headquarters of more than 30 major businesses in America." -- Nadirah Khalifah

"First-time visitors to the city can take in the sights below the magnificent skyline. The Levine Center for the Arts, along the southern part of uptown boasts several museums, some of which will offer free entry on Labor Day. Nearby is the NASCAR Hall of Fame, for NASCAR fans and those who are not fans but will be after seeing this state-of-the art facility honoring NASCAR drivers. Also nearby is the Green Uptown, a lush garden park, great for relaxing. Two blocks away is the Bank of America stadium, home of the Carolina Panthers, Charlotte's NFL team. The DNC will conclude in this spot when President Barack Obama gives his acceptance speech on Thursday night." -- CL Claiborne

"The Queen City, as Charlotte is called, has three-quarters of a million residents. Included are people of all ethnicities, races and cultures. Over the last decade, there has been a steady growth of residents from all walks of life from all over the United States and other continents. The diversity in Charlotte is one of the reasons why this city is one of the greatest places to be." -- Heather M. Johnson-Emerson

Culinary diversity

"Jamaican, Moroccan, even Vietnamese. You name it and Charlotte has it on the menu. The North Davidson Arts District is a great place to find a range of cuisines, and it even includes a French Bistro. The Penguin Drive-In is Charlotte's most famous restaurant. The drive-in has been featured on The Food Network and has been a Charlotte institution since 1954 after being founded by a World War II veteran." -- Ryan D. Harris

"Another fine establishment every visitor to Charlotte must enjoy is Amelie's, a French bakery. You'll be transported all the way to Paris while you sit and chat with the most interesting residents of Charlotte. You can wait in the long line on a Friday evening for your authentic chocolate croissant and French-press coffee just soaking in the chatter of the latest gossip. Can't sleep? Amelie's is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year." -- Mica Gadhia

"Although most streets will be closed in the immediate downtown area during the DNC, finding a suitable place to dine won't be an issue. Uptown is saturated with restaurants. Patrons can support a great cause and enjoy a fantastic meal at the King's Kitchen. All of the profits from sales at this local favorite support area ministries and feed the poor. There are many other great restaurants located uptown such as Ruth's Chris, Aria, Blue, and LaVecchia's. The EpiCentre also houses a variety of restaurants and bars, shopping, a bowling alley and movie theater." -- CL Claiborne

"The beautiful thing about dining in Charlotte is that you can go out with any budget and get any type of food you want. Whether you're in the mood for some Southern comfort food, fresh seafood or maybe even a five-star dinner, you can find the right restaurant easily. Some of my local favorites: Pie in the Sky Pizza boasts some great pizza for a great price! Dilworth Neighborhood Grille is a good place to go grab a burger and a beer while watching the game." -- Tyler Graf

The great outdoors

"For the outdoors-lover, there is Lake Norman, a huge man-made lake that is the largest body of water in the state. Just minutes to the north, Lake Norman was created by Duke Energy, which dammed the Catawba River in 1963. With more than 520 miles of shoreline, Lake Norman is home to a host of water sports and activities, including fishing, swimming, recreational boating, and plenty of hiking trails." -- Jeffrey Weeks

"To the south, Lake Wylie is just over the South Carolina state line and offers six public boat access areas. With 325 miles of shoreline, Lake Wylie is a great location for boating, fishing and skiing." -- Emily Oliver

"Though Charlotte, like other large cities in the state, is a bustling complex of skyscrapers, there are plenty of activities and sites in the area for nature lovers. Perhaps the most well-known nature attraction in the Charlotte region is the Whitewater Center. This center offers lots of water activities, such as kayaking, canoeing and whitewater rafting. In fact, this is the site where the U.S. Olympic canoeing and kayaking teams practice! Though best known for water activities, the Whitewater Center also has many land activities for folks of all ages, including mountain biking, zip lines, rock climbing, and 17 miles of trails along the Catawba River." -- Emily Oliver

"A huge attraction for locals and visitors alike is the Blue Ridge Parkway, although it's a bit of a drive from Charlotte. This scenic highway connects travelers to the Great Smoky Mountains with features that include trails, parks, rivers and splendid scenic overlooks. World travelers come to witness the phenomenal splendor of the autumn colors brought on by the changing of the seasons." -- Valerie A. Modreski

"Charlotte has its own draw as a destination, being flanked by two large lakes and overflowing with public parks--17,600 acres in fact." -- Vincent Eagan III

A sports mecca

"The headline attraction is the Carolina Panthers football team, a franchise started in 1995 that regularly sells out its home games at the 72,300-seat Bank of America stadium." -- Jeffrey Weeks

"For those sports fans that have a need for speed, the Charlotte Motor Speedway offers the very best in NASCAR racing. Just 13 miles outside of uptown Charlotte, the speedway brings the best and the brightest out on the track to battle for victory while the crowds cheer them on. As an add-on to their experience, racing fans can drive the short trip into the city of Charlotte to visit the NASCAR Hall of Fame. This state-of-the-art facility is a historical tribute to the NASCAR tradition, and is a one-of-a-kind Queen City experience." -- S.L. Schmitz

"Oh, and did we mention that we have Michael Jordan here in Charlotte? Yeah, that Michael Jordan." -- S.L. Schmitz

Day After GOP Convention, Biden Slams Romney, Ryan

Mark Stahl/AP Photo

LORDSTOWN, Ohio ? Vice President Joe Biden slammed the Republican ticket on Friday, just one day after Mitt Romney officially accepted his party?s nomination, saying that much of what they spoke about at the convention ?wasn?t on the level.?

Speaking before a local auto workers union, Biden criticized Ryan for linking President Obama to the closing of a GM plant in Janesville, Wis., Ryan?s hometown, but the plant actually stopped producing GM vehicles in 2008 while George W. Bush was still president. Biden didn?t mention? that the plant completely ceased operations ? a small force continued work for Isuzu -? in April of 2009, several months after Obama took office.

Get more pure politics at?ABCNews.com/Politics?and a lighter take on the news at?OTUSNews.com

?You heard Congressman Ryan on Wednesday night, in a stirring speech, blame the closing of a GM plant in his hometown of Janesville on the president of the United States. Folks, let?s look at the facts. The one thing the congressman was right about, and I know from my own community of the two plants closed in Delaware, it was devastating for the people of this community,? Biden said at the local UAW 1714.

?But what he didn?t tell you is that plant in Janesville actually closed when President Bush was still in office. He didn?t tell you that,? Biden said. ?What they didn?t say, but for the sacrifices you all made, and the courage of the president of the United States, all those GM plants would be closed here, across the country.?

?

The plant rolled its last GM SUV out the door in December 2008 and stayed open for a few months in 2009 to complete orders on Isuzu vehicles. The plant then went into standby mode and has remained in that status ever since.

Biden, who was speaking at a union site close to a new GM plant that?s set to produce the new Chevy Cruze, pointed to new jobs and investments made in the auto industry here in Lordstown, along with the $23 billion companies like Ford, Chrysler and General Motors have promised to invest in production on American soil.

?What they didn?t say at their convention is because of the auto rescue, there are 4,500 of you working here today making a decent wage. What he didn?t say, GM is adding two shifts, GM has already announced a $200 million investment here in Lordstown,? Biden said. ?It?s not the Bain way, not in Mexico, not in China, not in Vietnam, but in Lordstown, in Detroit, in Toledo, in Cleveland. Made America, made in America.?

Brendan Buck, a spokesman for Ryan, said, ?The vice president can?t answer for this administration?s unfulfilled promises and failed record. The president inherited a troubled economy, but he?s not made it better ? he?s made it worse, with fewer jobs and lower incomes for middle-class families. Like many towns across America, Janesville, Wisconsin, is still waiting for the recovery the president promised.?

Biden criticized Romney?s position on the auto bailout and lobbed a new Bain attack at Romney, citing a recent piece by Rolling Stone correspondent ?Tim Dickinson?that alleges Romney was, said Biden, ?willing to go to extremes to secure a federal bailout? for Bain.

?You know, he?s absolutely against the federal government or any government using funds to save jobs and save industries. That?s not his view in the free enterprise way. He says it?s bad for business, except when it comes to his business,? Biden said. ?The way Bain Consulting reorganized cost the government and American taxpayers $10 million.?

?Now, imagine that. It was one thing when a million middle-class jobs were on the line. It was another thing when his own financial interests and those of his partners are on the line. And now ? and now they say they care about the middle class. Isn?t it amazing how they found the middle class? They were searching all around, and they found it,? Biden said to laughter.

Biden told the crowd he was proud to speak before a group of autoworkers because ?as the son of an automobile man, this makes me feel good. My dad sold what you make, and he sold Chevys, by the way.?

Liftoff! NASA launches twin probes to study Earth's radiation belts

This story was updated at 6 a.m. ET.

An unmanned rocket turned night into day early Thursday (Aug. 30) as two heavily armored NASA spacecraft finally launched into orbit study Earth's harsh radiation belts after a week of delays.

The twin Radiation Belt Storm Probes launched at 4:05 a.m. EDT (0805 GMT) today from Florida's Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, lighting up the predawn sky as it soared into space atop an unmanned United Launch Alliance Atlas 5 rocket. The liftoff had been planned for Aug. 23, but it was pushed back two days due to technical glitches, and then another five days to avoid foul weather from Tropical Storm Isaac.

"It was a wonderful event, a very smooth countdown," NASA launch manager Tim Dunn said after the launch, adding that the Atlas 5 gave NASA's newest science satellites "a great ride."

"We're all thrilled. Just excited as can be," Dunn added.

After a 60-day commissioning period on orbit, the new radiation-tracking spacecraft will begin the science phase of their two-year mission, which aims to help scientists understand how Earth's two doughnut-shaped Van Allen radiation belts affect our planet's space weather.

Such information could have considerable practical applications, researchers said, since extreme space weather can knock out satellites and disrupt GPS signals, radio communications and power grids.

"RBSP will be able to predict the extremes and the dynamic conditions of space weather," Mona Kessel, program scientist for the $686 million mission at NASA headquarters in Washington, D.C., told reporters in a prelaunch briefing on Aug. 20. [Launch Photos: NASA's Radiation Probes Blast Off]

Mysterious radiation belts

The twin solar-powered probes will ply the Van Allen belts, where trillions of high-energy charged particles from the sun have been trapped by Earth's magnetic field. These fast-moving particles can damage satellites and potentially pose a threat to orbiting astronauts.

To deal with this harsh radiation environment, critical components on each RBSP spacecraft are shielded by 0.33 inches (8.5 millimeters) of aluminum.

The inner Van Allen belt usually extends from the top of Earth's atmosphere to about 4,000 miles up (6,437 kilometers), while the outer one runs from around 8,000 to more than 26,000 miles above our planet (12,874 to 41,842 km). The belts are dynamic, however, and can expand greatly during solar storms.

Though the two belts were discovered in 1958, they remain mysterious today. For example, the belts sometimes react quite differently to seemingly similar solar outbursts, for reasons scientists don't yet understand.

The RBSP team hopes the twin probes can help researchers get to the bottom of such puzzles.

"RBSP was designed to answer the questions of how these radiation belts are responding," said mission deputy project scientist Nicola Fox, of the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Md.

Working together

The nearly identical RBSP spacecraft are about 6 feet wide by 4 feet tall (1.8 by 1.2 meters), though their span increases to 10.5 feet (3.2 m) with their solar panels deployed. Each weighs roughly 1,400 pounds (635 kilograms).

The probes will fly in formation through the Van Allen belts on highly elliptical orbits, mapping out the regions' magnetic fields and charged particle density with their eight science instruments.

"We need eight because we're measuring across this huge [particle] energy range," said Harlan Spence of the University of New Hampshire, one of the mission's principal investigators.

And launching two spacecraft rather than one is not redundant, either, scientists said. The probes' observations will allow researchers to determine whether differences in radiation levels inside the belts reflect changes across space or time.

Together, the RBSP spacecraft will precisely track how the Van Allen belts ebb and flow over time. This information ? combined with observations from sun-watching spacecraft like NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory ?could greatly improve scientists' space weather forecasts down the road, researchers said.

RBSP's measurements could also have more immediate benefits, they added.

The probes' observations "will be delivered in near real time to users all over the world, so that those users can use the space weather data to protect sensitive ground-based as well as space-based assets," said Michael Luther, deputy associate administrator for programs for NASA's Science Mission Directorate.

Rwanda's Bralirwa first-half net profit rises 45 pct

KIGALI (Reuters) - Rwandan brewer Bralirwa reported a 45 percent rise in first-half net profit, driven by higher prices for its beer brands and soft drinks, and predicted further growth for the rest of the year.

The company, 75 percent-owned by Heineken, cited a growing market and a favourable exchange rate of the Rwandan franc against the euro for the earnings growth in the face of increasing competition.

Net profit for the first six months rose to 7.9 billion francs.

"I do not see any reason why the current trend should not continue, even with the competition we have," managing director Jonathan Hall told reporters on Thursday.

"I have mentioned the forex effect of the significant depreciation of the euro against the Rwandan Franc, which is very significant and I think is likely to continue."

He said the company would retain its policy of rigorous cost control, and said the biggest threats to the brewer's business were from outside East Africa, the euro and the slowing down of the economy in China.

Bralirwa is Rwanda's oldest brewery with rights to produce brands such as Guinness and Amstel. It also produces branded soft drinks such as Coca-Cola.

U.S. soldier accused of leading militia plot was suspect in wife's death

(Reuters) - The U.S. Army private accused of being the ringleader of an anti-government militia in Georgia was a suspect in the death of his wife months before prosecutors say he and three fellow soldiers murdered two people to keep their clandestine group secret, authorities said.

Isaac Aguigui funded the anarchist militia FEAR, or Forever Enduring Always Ready, with up to $500,000 in life insurance benefits he collected after his wife's death in July 2011, prosecutors said.

Aguigui and three other soldiers stationed at Fort Stewart in southeastern Georgia near Savannah have since been charged with murder and other offenses stemming from the December 5, 2011, shooting deaths of a former soldier and his teenage girlfriend.

Aguigui, 19, and two others were scheduled to appear in court in Long County, Georgia, for a hearing on Thursday. A third co-defendant reached a plea deal with prosecutors on Monday.

The accused militia members had plotted to assassinate President Barack Obama and to attack their Army base and a dam in Aguigui's home state of Washington, Assistant County District Attorney Isabel Pauley said during those proceedings.

They also discussed poisoning the apple crop in Washington state and had purchased $87,000 worth of weapons to carry out their planned attacks, she said.

Prosecutors said the group crossed the line from conspiracy to actual violence when they killed Michael Roark, 19, and Tiffany York, 17, whose bodies were found in a wooded area near the base, in a bid to keep them from exposing the militia.

One of the four accused killers, Private First-Class Michael Burnett, pleaded guilty on Monday to a lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter and agreed to testify against his three co-defendants.

As part of the plea deal, he would be spared the death penalty so long as he cooperates.

WIFE'S SUSPICIOUS DEATH

Months before the two slayings in December, military authorities were investigating Aguigui's role in the death of his wife, also a soldier at Fort Stewart, according to Sergeant John Kruse of the police department in Wenatchee, near Aguigui's northwest Washington hometown of Cashmere.

Kruse told Reuters on Wednesday he inquired about Aguigui with the Army Criminal Investigation Command when a member of Aguigui's family approached the police sergeant with concerns she had about her relative. At the time, Kruse said, Aguigui was on leave from the Army and visiting his old neighborhood.

In addition to confirming the relative's claims that Aguigui was under investigation in connection with the suspicious death of his wife, Kruse said he also confirmed with a local gun merchant that Aguigui had recently purchased 15 firearms, several of them semiautomatic rifles.

Kruse said he informed the FBI about his findings and that Aguigui was interviewed by FBI agents before he returned to Fort Stewart.

Army Criminal Investigation Command spokesman Chris Grey said the agency has an ongoing investigation against Aguigui but declined to comment further. The FBI declined comment.

Pauley, the Long County prosecutor, also has said the death of Aguigui's wife, Deirdre Wetzker Aguigui, was regarded as suspicious. None of the authorities Reuters contacted revealed any of the circumstances known about her death.

She was 24 years old and five months pregnant when she died in July 2011, said her father, Alma Wetzker, reached by telephone at his home in Minnesota. He declined to speculate about his daughter's death while it was under investigation.

He said the couple met at the U.S. Military Preparatory Academy in Fort Monmouth, New Jersey.

"Isaac is a natural leader and he has tremendous capacity to do whatever he wants to accomplish," Wetzker said, adding that his daughter "never would have gone along with what they're accusing Isaac of."

His late daughter was an Arab-language linguist for the Army who had served in Iraq and was promoted to the rank of sergeant shortly before her death, he said.

Laughing Your Way To The Bank With These Auto Insurance Methods

Even if you need money badly, you should never manufacture a fake claim or make the damages appear worst than they are. Your insurance company will probably notice that you are trying to cheat them. You could get in trouble and your premium could go up because of this. Keep in mind that you are dealing with professionals.

If you are a teen driver, attend driver?s ed to lower your insurance rates. Drivers, especially new teen drivers, are looked at as less of a risk by insurance companies as they have obtained driving training and are more aware of the rules and laws of the road. For this reason, an insurance provider will lower rates of teen drivers who took driver?s ed either in school or independently.

Insurance companies figure up your monthly payments in part based on the risk you present as a driver. To lower this risk factor, you can make sure your car or truck is parked away in a garage. Not only does keeping your car in a garage help prevent theft, but it also helps prevent weather damage and other damages that may occur.

Know the value of your car and get coverage accordingly. If your car is old, then it probably doesn?t make sense to have full coverage on it, but you may want full coverage if you have a new car. Also, look into purchasing Gap insurance for the first couple years that you have a new, financed car that was purchased using less than twenty percent down.

Are you a student under the age of twenty five with above average grades? If so, you may be able to get a discount on your auto insurance, this discount is available from many companies. You may have to provide a copy of your latest transcripts from school as proof, but for the money off your insurance cost it is well worth your time.

Think about the way you prefer to interact with an insurance company before purchasing a policy. Many carriers now offer direct to consumer options online, but if you prefer working directly with an agent, you may not receive the type of service you want from one of these companies. However, if you prefer to take care of your insurance needs online or over the telephone, one of these companies might be ideal for you.

When obtaining a quote for auto insurance, have a list of your car?s safety features, this will qualify you to receive a discount. If your vehicle has full airbags or an installed security system, you may be eligible for a discount. At the same time, if you have a young driver with good grades in your home, you may qualify for discounts based on driver characteristics. Have this information handy so you can ask about all possible discounts.

Call your insurance company before you go to buy a new car. Auto insurance can be a huge expense when you are making payments on a car. Leasing a car often has high insurance rates as well. Know what to expect before you buy, and you will have an easier time budgeting.

You can reduce the cost of car insurance by making sure you don?t buy coverage that you really don?t need. For instance, if you have an older car with a relatively low replacement value then you may not need comprehensive or collision coverage. Eliminating excess coverage from your policy could lower your premiums considerably.

When you rent a car, you will likely be asked if you want to purchase coverage for the vehicle. Before you answer, you should know whether or not your personal automobile insurance covers rental cars. If it does, how much is covered? Ask your agent, or read your policy to be clear.

As you now may be starting to understand, the auto insurance purchasing process does not need to be as painful as it once was. The important thing to remember is to explore your options. By following the tips and advice from this article, you will help to ensure that you have the best experience, while getting the best deal possible.

Calgary Windows and Doors | Suburban Life Magazine Interior ...

If you are unable to pick a paint color because you are not sure how the colors will look in your desired room, purchase a small amount of paint in different colors to test out on the wall. Having a larger color swatch to look at and evaluate in your room's lighting can help you to make a decision. Calgary Windows Before doing any work on electrical outlets, lighting, or any other item that is connected to your home's electricity, be sure that the power circuit is turned off to the area you will be working on. Failing to disconnect the power and touching live wires can result in electrocution or death. If you are running out of counter space in your kitchen, consider an over-the-range microwave. Replacing the range hood, these microwave ovens come in a wide range of prices, and some have special features such as convection cooking. Because most units have only a recirculating filter instead of a vent, they're best suited for cooks who don't require a strong venting solution. Dressing up pillows for a young adult's room can be very simple. Take some old clothes such as band shirts, shirts with cool designs or an old pair of jeans; cut them to size to fit your decorative pillows and sew them together. This can make a great personal addition to any teenager's room, and give their room a bit of personality. Install large corner shelves in your bedroom just below the ceiling. These shelves can easily be constructed using just a sheet of plywood and a couple of pieces of molding. Cut the shelf large enough that it can be used to hold large comforters and other items that you need to keep up and out of the way. The Pepperdine Graphic ? Waste time with the right game system

?

Gamers, both male and female, can?t wait to setup their TVs, plug in their Xbox or Play Station and lose themselves for hours on end.

Now the question is, which system will you be playing instead of studying for Humanities? Although there are some die-hard game system advocates, the majority of us do not really care about which system we are using as long as we are having fun.

There are three major systems on the market right now: the Nintendo Wii, Microsoft Xbox 360 and the Sony PlayStation 3. Each of these offers a different gaming experience for a different type of gamer.

The Nintendo Wii is more for the casual gamer ? someone who does not play games often but enjoys them occasionally with friends. The graphics of this system are usually subpar in comparison with gaming systems like the Xbox and PlayStation.

However, Wii does have extremely interactive games that get your body involved. For example, with Wii Sports and Wii Resort games, everyone can have fun looking foolish as they try to box, play pingpong and bowl a perfect game. The Wii also allows you to connect to the Internet through a wireless router. This permits you to use features such as Netflix straight from your Wii console.

The Xbox 360 is a system for gamers anywhere from casual to intense. The system?s graphics are far superior to that of the Nintendo Wii. There is also a much wider breadth of games that can be purchased for the Xbox. Unfortunately, a majority of these games are not multiplayer friendly.

Xbox Games do include some of the most memorable games of our time, including Halo and some of the Gears of War games. The Xbox also boasts the Xbox Kinect System, which actually puts your body movements into the game you are playing. This gives the Xbox a similar feature to that of the Wii. However, this Kinect system does come as a costly extra.

When it comes to online play, Xbox is placed at the top with the pool of people who play online. However, Xbox Live (the online gaming world of Xbox) has to be purchased a certain time period. This is a major drawback for the Xbox. Despite this, Xbox continues to be a powerhouse on college campuses because of its relatively low price for a great machine.

The final gaming system is the PlayStation 3. The PlayStation system is very similar to Xbox 360 in terms of graphics and types of games available. The main difference is the playstation allows you to play games for free online as long as you have a wireless router at your disposal.

Games like ?NBA 1k12? and ?Call of Duty? can be played online for hours on end without having to worry about paying fees. Playstation also has a built in Blu-ray player so you can watch all your favorite movies when you need a break from not studying.

Each of the systems will provide hours of distraction. The Nintendo Wii will run you about $150, the Microsoft Xbox 360 is $200 and $300 with the Kinect, while the Sony PlayStation 3 will cost $250. So the choice is yours ? procrastinate wisely.

Aspirin use not tied to breast cancer risk

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - How frequently older women use aspirin and other pain relievers has nothing to do with their chance of developing breast cancer, a large new study suggests.

Previous research has painted a cloudy picture, with some studies indicating that women who regularly take so-called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDs, have a lower risk of breast cancer, but others finding a higher risk with such drugs.

It's still possible that specific groups of women will benefit from certain doses of aspirin, other NSAIDs or acetaminophen (marketed as Tylenol), said one researcher not involved in the new study.

But right now, there's no good evidence any of those painkillers protect women against breast cancer, according to epidemiologist Lynn Rosenberg from the Boston University School of Public Health.

"I don't think they should be taking aspirin to prevent breast cancer," she said.

"If women are looking to decrease their risk of breast cancer, there is, I think, some pretty convincing evidence that high levels of exercise will reduce risk (as will) diets that are high in fruits and vegetables."

NSAIDs, including naproxen (Aleve) and ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), may block an enzyme that controls cell proliferation and death, therefore possibly affecting cancer risk. And acetaminophen could lower levels of estrogen, a hormone important to certain forms of breast cancer, researchers said.

Studies have found regular use of anti-inflammatories is tied to a lower risk of colon cancer, but it's been unclear whether that is true for other types of cancer as well (see Reuters Health story of April 8, 2011).

Researchers led by Dr. Xuehong Zhang from Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston used data from a long-term study of more than 100,000 nurses in the U.S., who filled out surveys every other year about their medication use, diet and lifestyle. The women also reported any new medical diagnoses.

Out of 84,600 participants who were past menopause and hadn't had cancer at the start of the study, about 4,700 were diagnosed with breast cancer between 1980 and 2008.

Researchers found that regularly taking aspirin and other NSAIDs - including daily use for more than 10 years - didn't affect women's risk of breast cancer, Zhang and his colleagues reported Monday in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.

Women in the study were typically taking aspirin for headaches, arthritis or other pain, or to protect against heart disease.

Survey participants currently taking acetaminophen were slightly less likely to be diagnosed with cancer than non-users - but there was no clear link between how long women had been taking the drugs, or at what dosage, and their cancer risk. Nor was past acetaminophen use, even for a decade or more, tied to fewer breast cancer cases.

"Our findings suggest that using these analgesics may not decrease women's risk of breast cancer," Zhang told Reuters Health.

"However, women should be reassured that there's no increase in risk with long-term NSAID use," he added.

One in eight American women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her life, according to the National Cancer Institute.

Rosenberg said she expects any future research on the link between painkillers and breast cancer to focus on whether there might be a benefit for specific groups of women or specific types of breast cancer.

Still, she told Reuters Health, "When you get into high doses of aspirin taken frequently, then you run into the problem of gastrointestinal bleeds - that's a huge, huge problem."

So it's unlikely, Rosenberg added, that any small painkiller-related benefits that might eventually be found for breast cancer would outweigh those risks.

Zhang agreed with her that for women looking to reduce their breast cancer risk, the best strategies are still maintaining an ideal body weight, exercising regularly and avoiding alcohol in excess.

Scientists discover nerves control iridescence in squid's remarkable 'electric skin'

ScienceDaily (Aug. 27, 2012) ? Squid's colorful, changeable skin enables the animal -- and their close relatives, cuttlefish and octopus -- to display extraordinary camouflage, the speed and diversity of which is unmatched in the animal kingdom.

But how squid control their skin's iridescence, or light-reflecting property, which is responsible for the animal's sparkly rainbow of color, has been unknown.

In a new study, MBL (Marine Biological Laboratory) researchers Paloma Gonzalez Bellido and Trevor Wardill and their colleagues report that nerves in squid skin control the animal's spectrum of shimmering hues -- from red to blue -- as well as their speed of change. The work marks the first time neural control of iridescence in an invertebrate species has been demonstrated.

Squid skin is extraordinary because it has two ways to produce color and pattern. Pigmented organs called chromatophores create patterns with yellow, red, and brown colors. Underneath the pigments, iridophores, aggregations of iridescent cells in the skin, reflect light and add blue, green, and pink colors to the overall appearance of the skin. Collectively these two groups of skin elements can create spectacular optical illusions with patterns of color, brightness, and contrast change.

"For 20 years we have been wondering how the dynamically changeable iridescence is controlled by the squid," says study co-author Roger Hanlon. "At long last we have clean evidence that there are dedicated nerve fibers that turn on and tune the color and brightness of iridophores. It is not an exaggeration to call this "electric skin." The complex nerve network distributed throughout the squid's skin instantly coordinates tens of thousands of chromatophores with iridescent reflectors for rapidly changing behaviors ranging from camouflage to signaling."

Working with longfin inshore squid (Doryteuthis pealeii), the researchers took a new approach to investigating the mystery behind the iridophore control mechanism. By tracing a highly branched network of nerves and stimulating them electrically, they found that they could activate progressive color shifts from red and orange to yellow, green, and blue in just 15 seconds. The findings suggest that the specific color of each iridophore, as well as speed of change, is controlled by the nervous system, as is spatial chromatophore patterning that occurs in the skin layer just above.

How squid choose and hold particular skin colors to help camouflage themselves remains unknown and is particularly interesting because the animals are completely colorblind.

"One possibility is the animals do not care about the color of the iridophores, but shifting the color from red to blue will dramatically increase the relative brightness of iridophores," says Wardill. "This is because squid see predominantly blue light. Blue light is especially important in the ocean as it penetrates best into deeper water."

The work was funded by grants from the Office of Naval Research (ONR), Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), and Air Force Office of Scientific Research.

Isaac Strengthens, Draws Closer to Florida | 5NEWSOnline.com ...

isaac

Miami (CNN) ? As Tropical Storm Isaac moved quickly through the Straits of Florida on Sunday, coastal communities in Florida issued mandatory evacuations and Republicans delayed the start of their national convention.

Residents along the Gulf Coast watched nervously as forecasters said the storm was moving west of its originally predicted path after passing through the Caribbean.

With sustained winds of 60 mph, Isaac lashed Cuba with strong winds and dumped rain on the island early Sunday. No major damage or injuries were immediately reported in Cuba. On Saturday, it slammed Haiti, where at least six deaths were reported.

Heavy rain was already falling in some parts of south Florida, where a tornado watch is in effect until 5 p.m. ET.

The outer bands of the storm extended as far as 205 miles from its center, which was roughly 50 miles southeast of Key West as of 1 p.m. ET.

Lee County, in southwest Florida, ordered residents in six communities, including the popular tourist spot of Fort Myers Beach, to evacuate, citing the possibility of significant storm surge.

The storm is expected to gain strength in the warm water of the Gulf of Mexico and become a hurricane by early Monday as it passes the Florida Keys.

By late Monday afternoon or early evening, Isaac?s eye is expected to be west of Tampa, Florida. It is expected to make landfall again on Wednesday somewhere along the Mississippi coast. By Wednesday ? the seventh anniversary of Hurricane Katrina ? Isaac could be a Category 2 hurricane with winds of at least 96 mph. The hurricane center said areas of the Louisiana coast from Morgan City east are under a hurricane watch. The watch includes New Orleans.

Officials in Plaquemines Parish declared a state of emergency and began preparing for the storm by bolstering levees and adding additional flood protection devices to low-lying highway areas.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott said some areas in his state had no power.

?We are experiencing some minor outages in the southern part of the state,? he said at a news conference in Tampa. He said his main concern for Tampa was no longer a direct hit from Isaac but strong winds from the storm?s reach.

Even with the change in the storm?s predicted track, GOP officials decided to push back Monday?s scheduled start of the Republican National Convention in Tampa by one day, hoping the move will make it safer and easier for delegates to attend.

Some airlines had canceled some flights between airports in south Florida.

In Key West, the southernmost point in the United States and likely the first part of Florida to be hit by Isaac, storefront windows were boarded up, while hotels were largely vacant even though no evacuation orders had been issued.

Some in Key West, though, suggested they were ready and eager to ride out the storm.

?We came down here to have a good time, we?re not going to let a hurricane get in the way,? said Paul Cannella, who is visiting the Keys from Chicago. ?I am a big believer in lifetime experiences, (and) I?ve heard about hurricane parties, so we?re going to have some fun with it.?

Bill Doktor, an iReporter from Punta Gorda, said he had put up hurricane shutters and already started a portable generator.

The rain comes in spurts, he said, pouring down for 15 minutes before subsiding for the rest of the hour.

Scientists from the U.S. Geological Society were concerned that Isaac, headed towards areas hit by Tropical Storm Debby in June, will compound damage done there, especially dune and beach erosion.

?Tropical Storm Debby eroded many beaches along Florida?s west central coast, impacting the property of many gulf-side residents and hotels,? Hilary Stockdon, a USGS oceanographer, said in a written statement. ?Beaches typically take years to recover from severe storm impact.?

A tropical storm warning was in effect for Florida?s east coast from Sebastian Inlet southward to Ocean Reef, and along Florida?s west coast and the panhandle from north of Bonita Beach to Indian Pass, including Tampa Bay.

?The likelihood of hurricane conditions occurring in southeast Florida is decreasing,? the National Hurricane Center said.

?Tropical storm conditions are occurring in the tropical storm warning area along the Florida east coast. Tropical storm conditions are expected to spread northward along the west coast of Florida and into the eastern Florida panhandle in the tropical storm warning area tonight and Monday.?

Sixth deaths in Haiti, recovery efforts under way

As preparations continued in Florida, authorities in Haiti were assessing Isaac?s aftermath.

The storm left at least six people dead when it struck the impoverished Caribbean nation on Saturday, pounding camps where hundreds of thousands of people live in tents.

The country is still recovering from a devastating earthquake that struck more than two years ago, and its challenges are compounded by the fact it is led by a relatively new government with limited resources. All that said, the top U.N. humanitarian official in the nation praised the initial response efforts.

?So far, I think we?re faring reasonably well in our response,? Kevin Kennedy said Saturday, referring to the efforts of the Haitian government, U.N. agencies and nongovernmental organizations.

Haitian radio reported that the worst damage was in the country?s southeast where Isaac made landfall.

In the city of Jacmel, on Haiti?s southern coast, the storm damaged houses and knocked out power. As many as 1,500 of the city?s residents took refuge in a school serving as a shelter.

Jacmel Mayor Hugues Paul confirmed at least one death on the outskirts of his city, voicing concerns that more deaths will be reported.

A 10-year-old girl also died when a wall fell on her house in Thomazeau, near Port-au-Prince, the country?s civil protection agency said.

At the Mega IV camp, where 8,000 Haitians live in makeshift shelters, fallen trees and flooding damaged hundreds of tents. Almost no one evacuated the camp before the storm, and authorities were searching the camp tent by tent for potential victims.

At another camp, Canaan, half the tents were blown away, according to an official statement on the radio.

Haiti?s national electricity supplier at one point said that 30 out of the country?s 32 electricity grids were down.

The storm also damaged the country?s banana crop, the U.N. reported.

After hitting Haiti, Isaac skirted eastern and central Cuba. Cuban officials reported some storm surge and flooding from rain in the far eastern part of the country, and about 200 people were said to be in shelters in the town of Baracoa.

Jeb Bush: Romney can connect with Americans

(AP) ? President Barack Obama's lead over Mitt Romney in polls over who connects better with the average American is only temporary because of the negative tone of the Democratic campaign, Jeb Bush said in an interview that aired Sunday.

The former Florida governor, whose brother and father both served as presidents, concedes that Obama has an advantage right now by appearing to care more about average people.

But he said as Obama is "constantly attacking, constantly using negative messaging, I think his connectivity with people will drop."

He told NBC's "Meet the Press" that Romney has a chance at the upcoming Republican National Convention to reconnect with Americans and "show who he is, what's in his heart."

"The acceptance speech is a great place to start. And when he does that I think those numbers will get better," said Bush, who has been scheduled to speak at the Republican National Convention. Bush said he plans to talk about education, a special interest of his.

Bush said recent debates over issues like abortion and Medicare remind that: "Republicans really need to be disciplined to stay focused on sustained economic growth (as) our objective and here's how we're going to do it, and here's why the president's failed."

And he cautioned that Republicans need to explain fully what they plan to do about Medicare.

"You can't just say, 'I'm for Medicare reform and leave it at that,' because then the attack machine on the other side says 'you're throwing granny off the cliff with ? in a wheelchair,'" said Bush, who grappled with the issue in his unsuccessful 1994 run for governor against Democrat Lawton Chiles.

Bush added: "You have to explain that the Romney plan does not change anything for anybody that is 55 years old and older."

The former Florida governor, whose wife Columba is Mexican-born, acknowledged his party has work to do in gaining support from Hispanic voters.

"Gov. Romney can make inroads if he focuses on how do we create a climate of job creation and economic growth," Bush said of the Hispanic vote. "And that's what I think this fall campaign's going to be about for their campaign. And I think people will move back toward the Republican side.

"But we've got to have a better tone going forward over the long haul for sure," he said. "You can't ask people to join your cause and then send a signal that 'you're really not wanted.' It just doesn't work."

Bezalel Books Blog and Banter: Bi-Locating and Other Necessary Motherhood Skills

Bi-Locating and Other Necessary Motherhood Skills

I glanced at the clock when I heard my husband say to my oldest son, ?Call me when you get home.??Where is he?? I asked. When my husband replied, ?He?s on his way home from work,? my stomach began churning. Not the hunger-type churn but the worried-mother-type churn. Our son had purchased a home just months before and was still getting a handle on things but between work and other demands, it wasn?t easy. My husband and I?and his brothers?had all helped out with painting, cutting the lawn, some electrical and lighting things and so on.It took all our willpower (my husband?s and mine) not to completely take over, but to just be available to help if and as needed. We wanted to take care of our son, get him set up in his new house. Mostly, I wanted?needed, really?to know that he was ?okay? and that he wouldn?t be overwhelmed by the demands of new home ownership. The point of the call was to set up a date and a time that my husband would be able to come and help with another task. To hear that my son wasn?t yet home from work for the day brought me to full attention. My brain went into mother-calculation mode. It is the only time my brain can do any math. Okay, he started his day with the sunrise and will end it with the sunset. Given he needs to now cook himself dinner?that means he?s operating on five hours of sleep. By now my stomach is in full blown acrobatic action. I?m talking Flying Wallendas. I?m worried about what he will make himself for dinner and want to drive the 25 minutes away to greet him with warm food.Every cell in my body is aching to go take care of him. The show on the television in front of me no longer has meaning. I can hear the words but don?t understand them as my mind creates a plan to get dinner to my son. My body sits on the couch but it is imagining the scenario in which I will feed my son. I want to bi-locate like never before.Of course I know that this won?t happen?neither the bi-locating nor the actual delivery of food. I know that I have to let my son be and let him learn and grow. I know what my job is now?even as I ache to tuck him in just one last time.I am so proud of him that sometimes I find myself crying. They are tears that remember that little boy who loved to sit and watch Mr. Rogers and eat dry Cheerios. They are tears that recall the day he received his college acceptance letter. Tears rim my eyes when I think about my son going off on his first job interview. My tears are those of gratitude that God has allowed me to know this incredible young man?an amazing son, a giving brother, a loving grandson?and has allowed me to be part of his journey.

Education of Business Online from NCSU Internet Marketing Tips ...

|

So, you?re finally going to get with the 21st century and start marketing your products or services on the internet. Well, just like traditional marketing, infiltrating cyberspace can be just as challenging as marketing old school style, but these days it can also be a lot more rewarding. One of the best internet marketing tips is to start with basics. Learn the nomenclature. Most of us have heard the terms, SEO, pay per click, keyword?etc, but you probably aren?t 100% sure what they mean. Learn them and all internet marketing related terms. It?s the best first step.

Next step is your website. If you don?t have one, get one. If you have one and it?s not burning up your sales charts, re-evaluate. Before contacting anyone about building your website, or reworking the one you have, get on the ?net and look at sites selling the same thing you are. Make note of designs you like, or dislike. Think about things like; how easy is it to get around, does it provide the information you need, and like any other marketing campaign, exploit the good things you find by using them yourself, and nix the bad things. Your web designer should be able to give helpful internet marketing tips as well.

You don?t need to be an expert on the technical aspects of internet marketing. It is important however, to have a working knowledge of the technology behind internet marketing. This comes into play mainly when you decide who is going to handle your website design, maintenance, and distribution. Just like that scurrilous yellow page rep who upsells you every time it?s renewal time, there are unscrupulous internet service providers out there as well. You want to be sure your team includes an internet service company that provides you internet marketing tips as well as, all the pretty bells and whistles that go along with an internet marketing campaign.

Finally, one of the best internet marketing tips you can get is to not lose your creativity! Just because this is a medium that may seem foreign and confusing to you, don?t despair. Let the experts handle the details. You need to do what you do best, handle your business. Like all yours sales and marketing strategies, think about your customer and what they are looking for in an internet marketing campaign. Just like a traditional marketing campaign.

Health Insurance: The What, When And Why | Marijuana for MRSA

Invest in a Health Savings Account to take care of the incidental needs not covered by your insurance policies. You can use these savings to cover your deductibles or pay for other health related items that are denied by your insurance company. You will earn interest on this account, and you can deduct that interest when you file your taxes.

Do not let your insurance policy lapse before you look and get new coverage. If your policy is going to be canceled due to unemployment, you can get help from the COBRA program that the government offers. This will help you keep ongoing coverage while you find a new job and avoid a lapse.

When you decide to apply for a new insurance plan, take it for a test drive! Many insurance companies afford you a period where you can cancel the policy if it doesn?t meet your needs. Make sure to ask when you sign up if your company offers this and how long the period is, and if there are any rules which will end the period immediately when you break them.

Know your health insurance coverage and the steps you need to take if something happens. If you are diagnosed with an illness and your doctor wants you to have some treatments or take certain medication, you should call your insurance company right away to see if the recommendations are covered on your policy.

Choose a PPO or HMO plan to save money on your health insurance premiums. While these plans limit your choices of doctors and hospitals, they can save you money when it comes to paying for health insurance. Most offer a wide range of doctors from which to choose, so you should still be able to get quality medical care with one of these plans.

Before you go out and choose your health insurance plan or carrier, make sure that you shop around and learn what everyone has to offer. There are tons of health insurance providers out there at this exact moment and you want to be sure that you find one that is a good match for you and your family.

When considering a health care insurance plan from your employer, be sure to take advantage of any plan that allows you to put aside certain amounts of pre-tax money from your paycheck. This is beneficial because you can save money by not paying taxes on income that is used for items that you will already be purchasing such as contacts or medical supplies.

If your health insurance premiums seem high, then it costs you nothing to shop around and get quotes from other companies. You may want to do this even if your insurance is provided through your employer. If you find a better plan and rate, then you can cancel your coverage through your employer and use your larger paycheck to pay for your own insurance plan.

Before getting a prescription filled, you should hand the pharmacist your insurance card. Some companies will actually pay a percentage of medication prescriptions for their customers. That means that you could save money on your prescriptions. You can look online to see what your policy does and does not cover.

If you have lost your job, you have two options when it comes to health insurance: opt for COBRA and pay the full premium your employer was paying on your behalf, or sign up for your own personal insurance plan. Your COBRA insurance may be expensive, but you could face trouble qualifying for a new insurance plan.

Obtaining health insurance as a group is generally less expensive than as an individual. A good example of this is when a company obtains health insurance for all their employees. The company gets a better rate than if an individual were to obtain the same plan. This does not mean however that you are out of luck if you are unemployed or if your employer does not offer health insurance. It is always possible for you to create your own group or join a group for health insurance discounts. Organizations that you can join include trade groups and alumni associations.

To get the most out of your health insurance, learn what your state requires companies to recover. Your insurance company may say they don?t cover a certain procedure, but if your state says that they do, then they have to comply. This can be a great way to get care or services you didn?t think were available to you.

It is very important to know the rules and regulations for health insurance in your state. Some states have laws about individuals with pre-existing conditions and others do not. Do your research so that you can make sure that you know what the laws are about health insurance in your state.

Now you know! Hopefully, you read some ideas that will help you with health insurance decisions. Understandably, with the cost of insurance in general rising, you need to have the proper coverage at the right price. Use the tips that apply to your own circumstances. Be prepared for the unexpected.

Back to school: 11 ways to save on textbooks

The average college student will spend a whopping $655 on textbooks this year. Here's how to trim the bill.

By Brandon Ballenger,?Contributor / August 24, 2012

You can borrow textbooks at your college library for free, if you're quick enough. If not, price comparison and checking online for non-copyrighted material are good ways to save.

That sounds low to me ? more like what I?d spend in a semester as an English major a few years ago.

The National Association of College Stores says today?s prices are less than two years ago ($667) or four years ago ($702), but it?s still a lot. And $47 in savings isn?t all that comforting when you consider the average total cost of college has jumped 28.6 percent ? almost $4,000 ? over those same four years, according to the U.S. Department of Education.

Anything you can do to offset costs counts. So here are some strategies to save on your textbooks, starting with this video from Money Talks founder Stacy Johnson. Check it out, then meet me on the other side for more?

Now let?s add more details and tips?

1. Contact your professors now

Class may not start for weeks, but chances are your textbooks are already decided ? professors have to give college stores advance notice so they can order copies. So email your profs and ask for the syllabus or required textbook list so you can snag the cheapest copies before your classmates get the chance.

If you know students who have had that professor before, talk to them. They might still have a copy for cheap. And the professor might say you need a certain book, but your friend who had him might tell you they only used it in class once, and there was nothing from it on the tests. But either way, before you buy?

2. Visit the campus library

Why pay anything when you can borrow it free? If you?re quick enough, you may be able to get one of the library?s precious few copies. If it?s checked out, see if you can reserve a copy that?s due back soon.

And don?t forget digital libraries. As Stacy mentioned in the video, many out-of-copyright works are available on sites such as Project Gutenberg and Bartleby.

3. Buy used

Used books have to be in decent condition for stores to resell them, so that?s not a concern. The savings can be significant, especially on an older edition. On several occasions in college, I bought used books online for less than $10 (including shipping) when the new price was $60 or more. None had significant defects (sometimes a little highlighting or writing) or were missing anything essential for the class.

4. Check rentals?

Companies like Chegg,?BookRenter?and?CampusBookRentals helped create an active market for textbook rental. Now many college bookstores offer the option, which can save a third or more over buying. (If you rent from an online store, shipping is usually covered.)

Just be aware that if the book is relevant to your major and you might reuse it, the savings might be greater by buying. It can be hard to tell whether you?ll need a book again, but if it?s by an author important to the field, the odds increase you?ll want to own. I had books overlap in different English classes, and I also reused a few books from undergrad in my graduate courses.

5. Look for digital

As the number of tablets and e-readers grows, so does the selection of digital textbooks. And you can also rent digitally. Last year, The Chronicle of Higher Education found an accounting textbook that ?retails at $197 in print and $109 as an e-book, [but] would cost $57 to rent from Amazon for three months,? with the option to extend the rental or purchase it later. Amazon suggests you can save up to 80 percent with its Kindle rentals, and you don?t even need to buy a Kindle ? there are compatible reading apps for computers and smartphones.

6. Compare prices

Prices can vary widely among both new and used copies, and online isn?t always cheaper. You can easily save 20 percent even on new books by comparison shopping.

At a minimum, I would suggest checking at?Half.com?and Amazon.com in addition to your school bookstore and any nearby off-campus competitors.

BookFinder.com, DirectTextbook.com, and TextbookPriceComparison.com can help you compare.

7. Make sure you get everything

Sometimes books are packaged with software, codes for required online access, digital content, study guides, or workbooks. If the course requires any of that stuff, make sure your copy includes it ? or that you can still save by buying it separately.

8. Know the rules

Understand the refund policy when you buy, so you don?t get burned if you end up not needing a book or drop a class.?Being in a hurry to open it can hurt you ? unwrapped or marked books might not get you a full refund.

9. Keep receipts

Not only will you need these for returns, but you might want them for tax deductions.

10. Pay smart

Your school may offer textbook advance loans to ease you into the semester before financial aid comes in. You might also be tempted to charge books to your credit card. Both those options risk extra fees and possibly interest, so read up before you swipe or sign.

On the other hand, credit cards are smart to use for online purchases, in case there are any disputes. Just pay off the balance as quickly as possible.

11. Sell back

Digital books and rentals may save you money up front, but until they dominate the market, most textbooks will still have good resale value. For now, you ultimately keep more money in your pocket by buying used and reselling before a new edition is released. (When a new edition comes out, the value plummets ? which is why you can buy old editions for so little.) But notice we say ?sell,? and not ?trade in.? Selling to your college store after finals is fast, but it?s not the way to get the most money back.

If you have the financial flexibility, reselling is the way to save the most.?In May, we did an in-depth post on how to turn your textbooks into cash. Here?s a sample of Money Talks News writer Ricky Michalski?s analysis?

I found Chegg sells [my chemistry book] for:

  • $165.49 new
  • $155.49 used
  • $117.99 as an e-book
  • $50.99 for a rental copy

But I bought the same book used on Amazon for $75 ? and when I was ready to sell it, one bookstore near my campus offered me $72 for my copy. Final price: $3 for a textbook!

Bottom line? There are tons of ways to save on textbooks, some mutually exclusive. But a little legwork can mean really big savings.
