French will 'quickly' exit Mali after mop up, leaving vacuum

After launching a full scale military intervention on Jan. 11, French forces in Mali faced little hard fighting and set to turn security over to African and local authorities.

French and Malian troops have recaptured two of the other provincial capitals, Timbuktu and Gao, in recent days. Once France, with its thousands of troops, fighter planes and helicopters, leaves, Mali's weak army and soldiers from neighboring countries Islamists might be hard-pressed to retain control of northern Mali's cities if the Islamists attempt a comeback from their desert hideouts.

"Now it's up to African countries to take over," French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius told Le Parisien newspaper. "We decided to put the means ? in men and supplies ? to make the mission succeed and hit hard. But the French aspect was never expected to be maintained. We will leave quickly."

Haminy Maiga, the interim president of the Kidal regional assembly, said French forces met no resistance when they arrived late Tuesday.

"The French arrived at 9:30 p.m. aboard four planes, which landed one after another. Afterwards they took the airport and then entered the town, and there was no combat," said Mr. Maiga, who had been in touch with people in the town by satellite phone as all the normal phone networks were down.

"The French are patrolling the town and two helicopters are patrolling overhead," he added.

In Paris, French army Col. Thierry Burkhard confirmed that the airport was taken overnight and described the operation in Kidal itself as "ongoing."

On Tuesday, a secular Tuareg rebel group had asserted that they were in control of Kidal and other small towns in northern Mali. Maiga said those fighters had left Kidal and were at the entry posts on the roads from Gao and Tessalit.

France, the former colonial ruler, began sending in troops, helicopters and warplanes on Jan. 11 to turn the tide after the rebels began encroaching on the south, toward the capital. French and Malian troops seized Gao during the weekend and took Timbuktu on Monday. The religious militants gave up both cities and retreated into the surrounding desert.

In Gao's main market, women returned to work on Wednesday without the black veils required by the Islamists. They wore vibrant patterned fabrics and sported makeup.

While most crowds in the freed cities have been joyful, months of resentment toward the rebels bubbled into violence in Gao.

Video footage filmed by an amateur cameraman and obtained by The Associated Press shows a mob attacking the symbol of the oppressive regime, the Islamic police headquarters.

Some celebrate cheering "I am Malian," while others armed with sticks and machetes attack suspected members of the Islamist regime. The graphic images shot Saturday show the mob as they mutilate the corpses of two young suspected jihadists lying dead in the street.

Gao's mayor and governor met Wednesday with community elders in an attempt to bring a halt to the vigilante attacks.

There are 3,500 French troops involved in the operation and 2,900 Africans, according to the latest figures from the French defense ministry.

Mali's military was severely affected by a coup last year coup and has a reputation for disorganization and bad discipline. Malian soldiers have been accused of fatally shooting civilians suspected of links to the Islamists. The military has promised to investigate the allegations.

Associated Press writers Baba Ahmed in Segou, Mali; Lori Hinnant in Paris; and Andrew Drake and Jerome Delay in Gao, Mali contributed to this report.

The Seattle Wine & Food Experience Ups the Ante ~ The Northwest ...

The Seattle Wine & Food Experience is rolling into town on Sunday February 24th. The fourth iteration of the event finds the volume turned up considerably this year and an opportunity for those in attendance to certainly taste Northwest wines but also explore, ciders, beers and and spirits. Additionally, as the title indicates there will be food. (It turns out lots of food from some of the region's more renowned establishments.)

What the title doesn't indicate is that the Seattle Wine & Food Experience is probably one of the more unique consumer wine tasting events in both Seattle and the Northwest. With 32 Washington wineries and 33 from Oregon as well as wines from Idaho, and someplace called California the event offers both focus and range. Where it gets interesting from the attendee's standpoint is with a lot of the "programming" and educational events that will go on throughout the event.

Let's face it though folks, brevity reigns when it comes to titles and so it's likely that the Seattle Wine, Cider, Spirits, Beer, Coffee and Food Educational Experience never crossed the event's producer Jamie Peha's mind as a title option. "I feel strongly that there needs to be more to an event than just eating and drinking and I'm a big proponent of making sure all audiences are served well. ?We encourage vendors/sponsors to create an educational bent to their participation and really offer consumers a way to engage with their products or services more deeply."

Folks can expect to taste a lot of wine of course, and in so doing there is a lot to be learned, but don't let the learning stop there. Cooking demonstrations with Stella Artois, and probably coolest of all is a beef tasting of Washington corn fed beef against Midwestern raised beef, a throw-down of sorts. I'd be lying if this didn't remind me of the story of the chef of McMinnville's Thistle, who got into a fistfight over a pig tasting, at Cochon 555 a couple years back in Portland. Let's hope peace prevails.

With any experience you get out what you put into it. If you're looking for an opportunity to submerge yourself into Northwest wine beyond Washington, or if you're looking to explore about 20 different spirits being produced here in the Northwest or if you're just looking for a good time you'll probably find all of those options at the Seattle Wine & Food Experience.

(I forgot to mention the whole reason for the "Up the Ante" title was the Snoqualmie Casino sponsorship and they'll actually be doing some gaming tables at the event. If you know when to hold em and know when to fold em, make sure you check that out as well.)

Tickets are still available here, but remember, the event sells out each year. Maybe I'll see you there?

Smooth Key Scroll for Chrome Makes Keyboard Scrolling Better

Smooth Key Scroll for Chrome Makes Keyboard Scrolling BetterChrome: Scrolling around with your keyboard in Google Chrome isn't exactly a nice experience. It's jerky, and you can't really read while you do it. Smooth Key Scroll is an extension that makes scrolling with the keyboard as smooth as it is with a mouse.

Smooth Key Scroll essentially ignores your keyboard's repeat rate to remove the stuttering you usually come across when you scroll with a keyboard. This results in a much smoother keyboard scroll that can be sped up or slowed down using the Alt and Ctrl keys. If you prefer to navigate with a keyboard as opposed to a mouse, Smooth Key Scroll makes that a little more pleasant.

Scientists discover process that turns normal liver cells to cancer cells

Jan. 28, 2013 ? A team of scientists from the Cancer Science Institute of Singapore (CSI) at the National University of Singapore (NUS) has identified a genetic process in which normal liver cells transform into cancerous ones. The finding provides new understanding into the pathogenesis of human cancers.

The team, which also includes researchers under the direction of Professor Guan Xin-Yuan at The University of Hong Kong, is the first to provide direct evidence that the "editing" of this protein-making sequence promotes the development of cancer.

Normally, deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), which comprises the genetic code, serves as a template for production of ribonucleic acid (RNA) in precise fashion such that the DNA code and RNA code are identical. Editing is the process in which the RNA is changed after it is made from the DNA, resulting in production of an altered gene product.

This novel study, which was conducted from June 2010 to November 2012, was first published in the online version of Nature Medicine on 6 January 2013.

Focus on RNA

The development of liver cancer is believed to be a multi-step process, in which genetic and epigenetic alterations build up. However, it is much easier technically to detect genetic mutations through DNA sequencing. Epigenetic changes, which by definition do not involve changes in DNA sequence, have not been as well defined because it is much more difficult technically to identify them and demonstrate their role in cancer.

While recent use of next-generation sequencing of DNA and RNA have been suggestive, no apparent causal relationship between the levels of RNA editing, a process of altering RNA sequences, and cancer progression was thought to exist -- until now. As such, RNA editing is a novel epigenetic alteration in cancer.

Recognising the importance of molecular mechanisms that underlay the development of liver cancer, the research team studied the roles that RNA plays in the formation of proteins to carry out functions within the body. The researchers are the first to clearly link the RNA editing event of a protein to be significantly associated with the development of liver cancer.

Professor Daniel Tenen, Director of CSI and Principal Investigator for the study, said, "Up to now, scientists have focused on studying DNA, not RNA. Because RNA can be more easily modified than DNA, it suggests that therapeutic approaches are potentially available."

RNA Editing Process Changes Protein

In the study, the researchers performed genomic analysis of three pairs of tissue samples, each pair comprising a sample of liver cancer tissue and an adjacent non-tumour tissue, from surgical specimens of liver cancer patients.

They found that the RNA editing of a specific gene known as antizyme inhibitor 1 (AZIN1) was much higher in the tumour samples. They discovered that this editing process was catalysed by an enzyme called adenosine deaminase acting on RNA-1 (ADAR1), which changed the product of the AZIN1 protein to a form which promoted the development of cancer.

To verify their findings, the team repeated the tests on paired tissue samples of some 180 liver cancer patients.

The results obtained were consistent with the initial genomic analysis, indicating that the RNA editing of the AZIN1 gene in tumours is significantly associated with the presence of liver cirrhosis, tumor recurrence, and poorer survival rate.

Said Dr Polly Chen, Research Assistant Professor at CSI, and the lead author of the research team, "We believe that there is high possibility that the findings are applicable to other cancers, but further studies are required to ascertain this."

The Next Step

Moving forward, Prof Tenen and Dr Chen will investigate the characteristics of AZIN1 and ADAR1 to further understand their impact on tumour development. They also intend to look at these mechanisms in other cancers. They will also work on ways to correct the RNA editing process so as to block the cells' conversion from normal to malignant.

Both scientists hope that their findings will provide the medical community with a useful biomarker that can be used to detect early disorders leading to liver cancer, and even other forms of cancer, before clinical symptoms become apparent.

Mysteries of spider silk strength unraveled

Jan. 27, 2013 ? Scientists at ASU are celebrating their recent success on the path to understanding what makes the fiber that spiders spin -- weight for weight -- at least five times as strong as piano wire. They have found a way to obtain a wide variety of elastic properties of the silk of several intact spiders' webs using a sophisticated but non-invasive laser light scattering technique.

"Spider silk has a unique combination of mechanical strength and elasticity that make it one of the toughest materials we know," said Professor Jeffery Yarger of ASU's Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, and lead researcher of the study. "This work represents the most complete understanding we have of the underlying mechanical properties of spider silks."

Spider silk is an exceptional biological polymer, related to collagen (the stuff of skin and bones) but much more complex in its structure. The ASU team of chemists is studying its molecular structure in an effort to produce materials ranging from bulletproof vests to artificial tendons.

The extensive array of elastic and mechanical properties of spider silks in situ, obtained by the ASU team, is the first of its kind and will greatly facilitate future modeling efforts aimed at understanding the interplay of the mechanical properties and the molecular structure of silk used to produce spider webs.

The team published their results in a recent issue of Nature materials and their paper is titled "Non-invasive determination of the complete elastic moduli of spider silks."

"This information should help provide a blueprint for structural engineering of an abundant array of bio-inspired materials, such as precise materials engineering of synthetic fibers to create stronger, stretchier, and more elastic materials," explained Yarger.

Other members of Yarger's team, in ASU's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, included Kristie Koski, at the time a postdoctoral researcher and currently a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford University, and ASU undergraduate students Paul Akhenblit and Keri McKiernan.

The Brillouin light scattering technique used an extremely low power laser, less than 3.5 milliwatts, which is significantly less than the average laser pointer. Recording what happened to this laser beam as it passed through the intact spider webs enabled the researchers to spatially map the elastic stiffnesses of each web without deforming or disrupting it. This non-invasive, non-contact measurement produced findings showing variations among discrete fibers, junctions and glue spots.

Four different types of spider's webs were studied. They included Nephila clavipes (pictured), A. aurantia ("gilded silver face"-common to the contiguous United States), L. Hesperus the western black widow and P. viridans the green lynx spider, the only spider included that does not build a web for catching prey but has major silk elastic properties similar to those of the other species studied.

The group also investigated one of the most studied aspects of orb-weaving dragline spider silk, namely supercontraction, a property unique to silk. Spider silk takes up water when exposed to high humidity. Absorbed water leads to shrinkage in an unrestrained fiber up to 50 percent shrinkage with 100 percent humidity in N. clavipes silk.

Their results are consistent with the hypothesis that supercontraction helps the spider tailor the properties of the silk during spinning. This type of behavior, specifically adjusting mechanical properties by simply adjusting water content, is inspirational from a bio-inspired mechanical structure perspective.

"This study is unique in that we can extract all the elastic properties of spider silk that cannot and have not been measured with conventional testing," concluded Yarger.

Immigration crime about to see its payday - Legal Insurrection

Question of Day ? Are 2nd Amendment rights not equal to squatters? rights?

From CBS News, some news and a rewrite of history as to ?immigration reform?:

A bipartisan group of leading senators has reached agreement on the principles of sweeping legislation to rewrite the nation?s immigration laws.

The deal, which was to be announced at a news conference Monday afternoon, covers border security, guest workers and employer verification, as well as a path to citizenship for the 11 million illegal immigrants already in the United States.

Although thorny details remain to be negotiated and success is far from certain, the development heralds the start of what could be the most significant effort in years toward overhauling the nation?s inefficient patchwork of immigration laws?.

The eight senators expected to endorse the new principles Monday are Democrats Charles Schumer of New York, Dick Durbin of Illinois, Robert Menendez of New Jersey and Michael Bennet of Colorado; and Republicans John McCain of Arizona, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Marco Rubio of Florida and Jeff Flake of Arizona?.

Several of these lawmakers have worked for years on the issue. McCain collaborated with the late Democratic Sen. Edward M. Kennedy on comprehensive immigration legislation pushed by then-President George W. Bush in 2007, only to see it collapse in the Senate when it couldn?t get enough GOP support.

That last paragraph is a rewrite of history.? Immigration reform was killed because of poison pills put in the legislation by Democrats (including Barack Obama) supported by some Republicans (including Jim DeMint).? Just another example of how the media, out of ignorance or worse, skews history to blame Republicans.

How big a payday this is for immigration crime depends on what the pathway to citizenship ends up being.

Regardless, it?s a payday because people who violated our laws to get here get to stay without consequence and get a pathway to citizenship.? That pathway takes immigration reform from some sort of humanitarian and practical solution to rewarding illegality.

It makes suckers of all the people who?followed?the rules and are on the other side of the borders and oceans because they didn?t want to become criminals.

Once again we send the message that immigration crime pays.? Apparently that is good politics.

Question of the Day ? Will violators of gun laws not connected to commission of?some other crime be given amnesty like immigration law violators?? Or are 2nd Amendment rights not equal to squatters? rights?

Update:? By the way, the comparison to squatters? rights is not something I thought up, it?s a theory advanced by former Cornell (and now U. Chicago) law professor Eduardo Pe?alver, who has written a book on the contribution of squatters to the development of property law, and who views?application of such theories?as a positive development as related to immigration law:

The better analogy is with the twin doctrines of adverse possession and prescription. These doctrines, which are virtually universal in systems of private property, recognize that possession or use of property that goes on for a long enough period of time should eventually be recognized as legal, even if they were illegal when they began. In most states, even an act of intentional squatting will ripen into full-blown property ownership after roughly seven to ten years.

(AP) ? Humbled a year ago when both its cars failed to make the podium, Chip Ganassi Racing returned to the Rolex 24 at Daytona determined to pick up another victory watch.

An eyebrow-raising lineup change that involved Juan Pablo Montoya showed just how serious the team was about winning, and it delivered Sunday with its fifth win in 10 appearances in the prestigious sports car race. The victory was the fifth for lead driver Scott Pruett, tying Hurley Haywood's record for wins in the twice-around-the-clock race at Daytona International Speedway.

The winning team of three-time defending Grand-Am drivers Pruett and Memo Rojas, along with Montoya and IndyCar driver Charlie Kimball, making his Rolex debut, beat the Max Angelelli-led VelocityWW team by almost 22 seconds for the victory.

It was Montoya who closed out the win, driving the final stint and waging a strong battle in the final hour with defending champion AJ Allmendinger. Ganassi's No. 01 BMW Riley had a clear horsepower advantage, and once Montoya got past Allmendinger, the win was his for the taking.

But the Ganassi team figured it was four laps short on fuel, and Montoya needed to build a lead of at least 40-seconds to hold off Angelelli and Allmendinger when he was forced to stop for gas. The Colombian did it by turning laps close to qualifying pace, and breezed to his third Rolex victory.

Montoya's other two wins were with Pruett on the No. 01 car in 2007 and 2008, but he spent the last three years driving for the No. 02 Ganassi "star car" and came away empty-handed each time. When the Ganassi cars were left off the Rolex podium last season for the first time since 2005, team management went to work on the cars and setting up a lineup that gave them two chances to win.

Montoya admitted he thought the switch was "a weird move," but owner Chip Ganassi and team manager Mike Hull insisted it wasn't a demotion for the driver who has been stuck in a lengthy slump in his full-time NASCAR job.

Clearly the pressure is on Montoya to perform this year, the final year of his contract with Ganassi, and he stepped up Saturday and Sunday as the No. 01 team had to balance out Kimball's inexperience. It was the first time racing in a car with a roof on it for Kimball, who has diabetes and uses his fight with the disease as his platform.

The Chevrolet team of Angelelli, defending IndyCar champion Ryan Hunter-Reay and Jordan Taylor finished second for team owner Wayne Taylor ? redemption after an engine failure 22 minutes in last year's event ended the team's day.

Defending race winner Michael Shank Racing twice came back from seven laps down to finish third in a Ford. It was a disappointing finish for team owner Shank, but a moral victory considering the hole the team clawed out of to make it to the podium.

Allmendinger, racing at Daytona for the first time since NASCAR suspended him for failing a random drug test hours before the July race here, teamed with fellow NASCAR driver Marcos Ambrose, IndyCar driver Justin Wilson and Grand-Am regulars John Pew and Ozz Negri for the finish.

Ambrose was added to last year's winning lineup after Negri broke his leg a month ago during offseason training, but Negri was able to return to the car this weekend for limited driving duties a mere six days after his cast was removed.

In the fight against obesity, it's all about balance | MNN - Mother ...

What role can a soft drink company play in America?s war on obesity? In the face of controversial decisions like New York City?s soda ban, The Coca-Cola Company believes it can play a role in a healthier diet and has instituted several programs to inspire people to live healthier, active lifestyles. Some of these programs involve rebuilding community parks, while another program calls upon physicians to record physical activity as a vital sign during patient visits. MNN, which counts Coca-Cola as one of its sponsors, interviewed Dr. Rhona Applebaum, Coca-Cola?s Chief Scientific and Regulatory Officer, to find out more. Applebaum received her master?s degree in nutrition from Drexel University and her doctorate in food microbiology from University of Wisconsin. She leads the Scientific and Regulatory Affairs Division at Coca-Cola, which is in part responsible for driving research and education programs about calorie intake, health, physical activity and food safety.

?

MNN: What can a soft drink company like Coca-Cola do to help people live healthier lives?
Rhona Applebaum: Coca-Cola?s active, healthy living philosophy is about encouraging people to eat right and move more. I subscribe to the fact that it?s about the whole diet and not about an individual food, which is what some people tend to focus on.

?

Active, healthy living is absolutely essential for our company; it?s not just some nice sound bite we like to say ? it?s a fact. We know that our business can only be as healthy as the communities in which we operate. That?s why we?ve supported programs like Triple Play that encourage kids to eat a balanced diet, become more physically active and increase their ability to engage in healthy relationships.

?

And in 2012 our philanthropic arm of the Company ? The Coca-Cola Foundation ? awarded almost $10 million to healthy living initiatives across North America.

?

Are soft drinks unfairly targeted in your opinion? Do they have a rightful place in the diet?

We firmly believe all our products have a place in an active, healthy lifestyle. Any food or beverage can fit into your life ? it?s all about how much and how often. At the end of the day, we encourage people to be as active as they can be; we encourage and promote physical activity. The higher your energy balance ? balancing the calories you take in with the calories you burn ? the healthier you?re going to be. We consume calories from many different sources. But we shouldn?t single out one food or beverage alone as the unique cause of obesity.

?

Please explain higher energy balance.
?Energy balance? refers to the concept of balancing calories in with calories out to maintain a healthy weight. Let?s compare two people, one who consumes 2,500 calories per day versus one who consumes only 1,500 calories. You might think the person who only eats 1,500 calories a day would look healthier because he appears thin, but that person probably is not getting all the essential nutrients he needs. At 1,500 calories, he?s probably not going to get the necessary physical activity levels, either.

?

On the other hand, if you?re eating a balanced diet and taking in 2,500 calories a day and are very physically active (and the activity can be moderate and not necessarily vigorous); if you?re moving and eating and you?re burning as many calories as you consume, then sure, you can enjoy any food and beverage within the Coca-Cola portfolio, including ones that are low-calorie or zero-calorie.

?

What has Coca-Cola done to encourage its employees to lead healthier lifestyles?
We have a great wellness facility at our Atlanta headquarters. We have signs throughout our corporate campus reminding employees to take the stairs and to park far away from the entrance. We also provide incentives ?for our employees around the country?to be physically active, including discounted gym memberships, $60-off annual medical contributions just for completing online health assessments, and we also encourage our people to measure their health stats regularly.

?

Personally, I have a standing desk. (Yes, I practice what I preach.) But to be healthy, you don?t need anything complicated or expensive. If you work at a desk all day, you need to get moving throughout the day and try to stand as much as you can while you?re on the computer. Simply take a walk when you get a chance during the day or take the stairs ? it?s the little things that will add up. ?

?

Do you think Coca-Cola is playing a part in reducing in childhood obesity?
I think we?re a part of the solution but it will take all of us ? government, business and civil society ? working together to find meaningful solutions to such a complex issue. In fact, we worked with the beverage industry to remove full-calorie soft drinks from schools in 2006 and replaced them with lower-calorie, smaller-portion beverage options.? By 2010, we reduced beverage calories delivered to schools by a dramatic 90 percent. We are also working with leaders like The National Governors Council on Physical Fitness to build fitness centers across the country that ?provide the means for people to get active. To help change the way people think about nutrition and exercise we need to work together. What I?d like to see accomplished, and what Coca-Cola is striving for in the schools, is to better develop standards of fitness and nutrition. We have testing standards in basic subjects, but we also need nutrition and fitness standards because kids who eat better, and who are more active, will thrive in school.

?

What are the most successful programs Coca-Cola has implemented to date to increase health awareness?
We have several programs that are contributing greatly to fostering and teaching principles of healthy lifestyles, but I?ll name two: Triple Play is a program that was launched in 2005 by the Boys & Girls Clubs of America in collaboration with the Department of Health and Human Services with support from The Coca-Cola Company to encourage kids to eat a balanced diet, become more physically active and increase their ability to engage in healthy relationships. A review of the program found that boys and girls who participated in Triple Play were more physically active and had a better understanding of nutrition than those who did not participate. The kids? self-esteem also soared.

The National Governors Council on Physical Fitness is also making a big impact. We?ve dedicated more than $5 million to provide 100 communities with new fitness centers for schools. In addition, The Coca-Cola Foundation has awarded $3.4 million in grants to support fitness and nutrition programs in the U.S. and around the world. Working with the National Foundation for Governor's Fitness Councils and the American College of Sports Medicine, Coca-Cola will place 100 new fitness centers in schools across the U.S. over the next five years. The unbranded centers will feature new fitness equipment and provide more than 5 million workouts annually; helping communities put physical activity back into schools.

?

You work in a male-dominated world. What was your experience like going through college and post-graduate?
For my post-graduate work, I focused on science: the theoretical and practical elements in nutrition as well as healthy lifestyle factors; toxicology; plant pathology and sustainable agriculture. Long before the days of social media, I realized the importance of networking and working in a global society. Yes, I?m the first female chief scientist at Coca-Cola. Although women are still underrepresented in science, my abilities were developed because of amazing male mentors. They looked at me as nothing but a professional who they wanted to groom. I am where I am today because of my ?STEM? foundation (science, technology, engineering and math) mentoring. We?re not going to be able to compete in terms of pioneering developments in health and science without that kind of mentoring ... I?m very passionate about that.

?

I do think that women are catching up, but we still need more women to go into STEM disciplines. At Wisconsin there were many women Ph.D. candidates in science-related disciplines, but that?s not always the case across the U.S. or globally. And, though more is needed, I am proud to say we have many women working at Coca-Cola throughout the company.

Film review: 'Hansel & Gretel' witch hunters aren't shocking | The ...

This film image released by Paramount Pictures shows, from left, Famke Janssen as Muriel, Jeremy Renner as Hansel and Gemma Arterton as Gretel in a scene from "Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters." (AP Photo/Paramount Pictures, David Appleby)

Review ? Action horror story is as straightforward as one of the star character?s titanium arrows.

With a title like "Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters" you pretty much know what you?re going to get: campy, blood-squirting, special-effects-laden mayhem.

The question is, does the movie deliver? Yes, but that?s the problem, because with that title you also should get a lot more.

?

HH

Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hungers

Grimm fairy tale siblings join forces to become witch hunters in this B-movie horror tale. Unfortunately, it?s a genre-twisting idea that doesn?t crank up the outrageousness and blood to 11.

Where ? Now open in theaters everywhere

Rating ? R for strong fantasy horror, violence and gore, with brief sexuality/nudity and language

Running time ? 88 minutes

For a movie that promises to unleash the ridiculousness of melding a Grimm fairy tale with the modern-day carnage of a Sylvester Stallone movie, the B-grade results should be a lot funnier, squishier and more outrageous. Instead, audiences are left with a middle-of-the road action horror story that?s as straightforward as one of Gretel?s titanium crossbow arrows. Even the fact it?s in 3D doesn?t give it any extra punch.

Hansel ("The Avengers?" Jeremy Renner) and Gretel (Gemma Arterton of "Clash of the Titans" and "Prince of Persia") have their well-known encounter with the evil witch in the gingerbread house. But what we didn?t know is the encounter would later ignite their passion for eliminating witches.

They?re now adults, and have been hired to rid the town of a witch (played by "X-Men?s" Famke Janssen) who has kidnapped children for an upcoming ritual. If that weren?t bad enough, the witch-slaying siblings also have to deal with an arrogant town sheriff (Peter Stormare as his usually snarling self) who keeps standing in their way.

In between the far-too-serious dramatic scenes, there?s plenty of hand-to-hand punching and kicking as the brother and sister beat through witch after witch. Thank heavens Hermione Granger wasn?t there.

Then again, that kind of surprise might have added some spice to an otherwise generic R-rated thriller. Like another genre-bending attempt, last year?s "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter," "Hansel & Gretel" doesn?t embrace its B-grade-movie sensibilities by shocking audiences beyond what they expect. Thirty years ago, this could have been the kind of fun Sam Raimi ("The Evil Dead") would have gorged himself on, and the role of Hansel would have fit Bruce Campbell like a glove.

Instead, the "Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters" we?re left with runs out of its magic potion far too early to let us enjoy its wicked possibilities.

Ball sports in the Roman empire ? Ancient and Modern Olympics

Ball games in Roman culture

Ball games tend to get a relatively low profile in our accounts of ancient sport. The reasons for that are pretty clear: they were not part of the standard athletic festival programmes, at Olympia or anywhere else.

And yet Roman society was a society obsessed with ball play.

Ball games were standardly played in bath-houses and in gymnasia, for entertainment and for health. The rules are very hard to reconstruct from our sources. Most of the websites which turn up on search engines really underestimate that difficulty, and also the variety of ancient ball games (more on that below). Many of them also overemphasize the links with modern sports?especially football. But if you want a basic survey the Wikipedia pages on (for example)?harpastum?or?episkyros?at least give some of the key sources in translation.

I?ve just been reading the Latin satirist Martial, and the letters of Pliny the Younger, along with some other authors who were more or less contemporary with them (late first/early second century AD), and it?s striking how often they mention people playing with balls. It turns up over and over again, as if it?s a standard part of day-to-day elite or life.

For example, Seneca complains in one of his Letters (56) about the noise from the bathhouse under his lodgings: the grunting of people lifting lead weights, the sound of massages, the sound of pickpockets being arrested. He also complains about the noise made by pilicrepi shouting out the score: the last straw, Seneca suggests. That word pilicrepus doesn?t turn up often in surviving Latin, and we?re not quite sure what it means, but this is presumably either a ball-player or a scorer. Either way, Seneca?s referring to him as if he?s a common sight (or sound) (too common for his liking) in the baths of Rome.

Medical writers talk a lot about ball play too, most importantly the great second-century AD medical writer Galen in his work On Exercise with the Small Ball. Galen hated athletes and athletics and especially athletic trainers for the damage they did to the human body and for the way they encroached on his medical expertise. But he also gave detailed instructions for alternative, more moderate types of exercise which were beneficial to the body: and the small ball is one of those.

Gaius Laberius

There?s a lot of ball play also in Roman art.

This image is from the small town of Sinj in Croatia, from a tombstone for a boy called Gaius Laberius, who has died aged 7 according to the inscription (although oddly the individual depicted seems to be much older than that). It dates as far as I can tell from the second century AD. He?s depicted here holding a ball made of hexagons, much like a modern football?presumably an attempt by grieving parents to commemorate one of the things he loved.

363px-Tombstone_of_Gaius_Laberius.xcf

It?s clearly a local landmark, and a source of local pride, and taken as evidence for the origins of football not just in the Roman empire, but actually in the pre-Roman local population: for example here.?There are photos here of one attempt at a recreation match, inspired by the tombstone.?And the monument also apparently featured on the front page of the FIFA newsletter in 1969.

I haven?t; been able to work out exactly what those arguments are based on. On the face of it it?s hard to see what is special about this ball image compared with lots of others which survive similarly in Roman imperial art, but maybe I?m missing something? (more details gratefully received, if anyone knows).

Antyllus on the small ball

Many of the key passages on ancient ball games are listed in the standard introductory books on ancient athletics, so I won?t plough through any more of them here.

But here?s one which isn;t easily available in translation. It?s by the medical writer Antyllus, writing in the second century AD.

It?s in the context of a wider discussion of other exercises too: running, horse-riding, hoop-rolling, swimming, wrestling and shadow-boxing.

Ball exercise makes people more agile and strengthens their vital energies. There are different types of exercise according to the different types of ball. The types are the small ball, the large ball, the medium ball, the good-sized ball, and the hollow ball. There are three types of small ball, each with a separate type of exercise. The first is very small? The exercise from this is very good for the legs? Then there is another ball, a little bigger than this one?And this is the best of the ball exercises, for it makes the body healthy and nimble, and it sharpens the sight without causing congestion in the head. And then there is a third ball bigger than these two which they play standing apart at a distance. There is a stationary version and a running version. In the first they stand and throw the ball repeatedly and forcefully. This exercises the arms and the eyes. The running version exercises the arms and the eyes in the same way as the previous one, but it also benefits the legs through running, and the backbone through the twists and turns which place during running.?(CMG 6.1.1, 185-6)

And much more of the same?

It?s a fairly austere account. It doesn?t help us to reconstruct the rules. But what is amazing, I think, is all the complex subdivisions here. Clearly ball play in the ancient world?came in a vast variety of different forms. It had something for everyone (or something for every part of the body, if you?re a medical writer like Antyllus).

We can at least see that ball play had its own very rich and complex culture in the ancient world, even if the nuances and the details are lost to us?

False beliefs persist, even after instant online corrections

Jan. 24, 2013 ? It seems like a great idea: Provide instant corrections to web-surfers when they run across obviously false information on the Internet.

But a new study suggests that this type of tool may not be a panacea for dispelling inaccurate beliefs, particularly among people who already want to believe the falsehood.

"Real-time corrections do have some positive effect, but it is mostly with people who were predisposed to reject the false claim anyway," said R. Kelly Garrett, lead author of the study and assistant professor of communication at Ohio State University.

"The problem with trying to correct false information is that some people want to believe it, and simply telling them it is false won't convince them."

For example, the rumor that President Obama was not born in the United States was widely believed during the past election season, even though it was thoroughly debunked.

The prospect of correcting falsehoods like this online before they have a chance to spread widely has obvious appeal, Garrett said.

In fact, it has already been attempted: A team from Intel and the University of California, Berkeley, developed Dispute Finder, a plug-in for web browsers that was released in 2009 and would alert users when they opened a webpage with a disputed claim. That project has ended, but Garrett said similar efforts are under way.

"Although the average news user hasn't encountered real-time correction software yet, it is in the works and I suspect it will see more widespread use soon," he said.

But will it work? In order to find out, Garrett conducted a study with Brian Weeks, a graduate student in communication at Ohio State. Their study (available here), which they will present Feb. 26 in Austin, Texas, appears in the 2013 Proceedings of the Computer Supported Cooperative Work and Social Computing conference.

Participants in the study were a diverse group of 574 adults from across the country who participated online.

The experiment was designed to see what would happen when participants read false statements copied from a "political blog" (actually text prepared by the researchers) about the issue of electronic health records.

While some of the information, collected from news stories and government sources, was correct, the researchers also inserted several false statements about who was allowed access to these records. For instance, the message falsely claimed that hospital administrators, health insurance companies and even government officials had unrestricted access to people's electronic health records.

The participants were divided into three groups -- some were presented with an immediate correction, saying that FactCheck.org, an independent fact-checking organization, had concluded this blog post contained factual errors. Inaccurate statements were italicized, enclosed in brackets and displayed in red, and a detailed correction appeared at the bottom of the page.

Others read the blog post with the errors, followed by completing an unrelated three-minute task, and then were presented with the exact same correction.

The final group was presented only with the inaccurate message during the study.

Afterwards, all participants were asked how easy or difficult it would be for several groups (including hospital administrators, government officials and others) to access electronic health records. Participants were graded based on the accuracy of their answers.

In general, those who received the immediate correction were just slightly more likely to be accurate than those who received the delayed correction. Those who received no corrections were, not surprisingly, the least accurate.

But the most interesting results came when the researchers analyzed who was influenced by each kind of correction.

The real-time correction worked well with participants who indicated at the beginning of the study that they supported electronic health records, also called EHRs.

"But for those who opposed EHRs, the effect of the immediate correction was essentially the same as if they had received no correction at all," Garrett said.

The reason appears to be that opponents of EHRs discounted the credibility of the source of the correction, Garrett said. On the other hand, the more favorably an individual felt about EHRs, the more credible the correction was perceived to be.

Although this pattern was also evident among those who received the delayed correction, the effect was significantly weaker.

Garrett said the results of this study cast doubt on the theory that people who believe false rumors need only to be educated about the truth to change their minds.

"Humans aren't vessels into which you can just pour accurate information," he said.

"Correcting misperceptions is really a persuasion task. You have to convince people that, while there are competing claims, one claim is clearly more accurate."

Garrett noted that, while instant corrections were slightly more effective than delayed corrections, the problem is that instant corrections actually increase resistance among those whose attitudes are supported by the falsehood.

"We would anticipate that systems like Dispute Finder would do little to change the beliefs of the roughly one in six Americans who, despite exhaustive news coverage and fact checking, continue to question whether President Obama was born in the U.S.," he said.

Garrett said it may be better to find a way to deliver corrections later, when people may not be so defensive about their beliefs.

The study was funded in part by the National Science Foundation.

CINCINNATI (AP) ? The Reds started a countdown to a 2015 All-Star game on Wednesday by breaking out the bunting and bursting into a standing ovation.

A few of them also started to dream about playing in it.

Commissioner Bud Selig awarded the midsummer game to Cincinnati on Wednesday, rewarding years of persistence by Reds owner Bob Castellini. The city hasn't hosted an All-Star game since 1988, when the Reds played at Riverfront Stadium.

"I can't imagine what's going to happen, but I think it's going to be beautiful," said second baseman Brandon Phillips, a two-time All-Star under contract through 2017.

The Reds lobbied hard for years to get the game.

It'll be the fifth time that the game is played in Cincinnati, which was the stage for one of the most memorable All-Star moments. Pete Rose bowled over Indians catcher Ray Fosse to win the 1970 game at Riverfront Stadium.

The 1988 game was something of a disappointment. Rain wiped out the home run derby events, and the American League won the game 2-1 a day later with the winning run scoring on a sacrifice fly.

The Reds moved into Great American Ball Park in 2003. Castellini became controlling partner in the ownership group after the 2005 season and was determined to bring the game back to his home city.

It'll be played in New York this year, followed by Minneapolis in 2014.

"I'll say one thing for Bob: Man, he is persistent," Selig said. "I could use a couple other terms to describe him. One starts, 'A pain in ...' But tenacity is a great virtue."

Baseball's oldest professional franchise has enjoyed a renaissance in the last few years. Under Castellini's leadership, the Reds reached the playoffs twice in the last three seasons, ending a 15-year postseason drought.

The franchise hosted the Civil Rights Game in 2009 and 2010, impressing Major League Baseball with its handling of one of its premier events. Former Reds shortstop Barry Larkin was inducted into the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y., last summer, putting the spotlight back on the franchise.

Now, the All-Star game.

"If we'd been able to bring the Reds along to where they're a perennial contender ? which we feel we're on the verge of doing ? that has to be the biggest challenge we've had in this ownership," Castellini said. "Then to have a jewel of having the All-Star game ? we can only surpass that by having the World Series."

Selig informed Castellini a few months ago that it appeared Cincinnati would get the 2015 game. The Reds brought business and community leaders, along with fans and members of the front office, to the announcement at the ballpark on Wednesday.

They gave a 30-second standing ovation when Selig announced the All-Star choice. The videoboards on the field lit up with the news.

Phillips, outfielder Jay Bruce and manager Dusty Baker were among those seated at the front of the room.

"It's only fitting that we get it here very quickly," Hall of Fame second baseman Joe Morgan said. "One of the things I missed in my career ? I didn't miss much ? I never got a chance to play an All-Star game in the city I was playing in. Brandon and Jay, you guys will get that opportunity. And Dusty, you'll get a chance to manage."

Baker returns this season on a two-year deal. He would manage the NL All-Star team if the Reds won the league title in 2014.

Bruce and Phillips have each played in two All-Star games. They heard Morgan talk about what he missed as a player and started thinking about what it would be like to be introduced as an All-Star in their ballpark.

"It would be nice," Phillips said. "If I'm not starting, then I have a problem. That's just how I look at it. To bring the game here, it's nice for the city more than the players. To hear Joe say he never played (an All-Star game) in Cincinnati ? maybe I can say I did."

Mayor Mark Mallory, who holds a special place in baseball blooper lore, noted that he started pushing to get an All-Star game in 2003. He said that Selig awarded it despite his opening day gaffe in 2007, when the major's ceremonial pitch stuck in his hand and bounded up the first base line.

The toss is shown in video collections of worst ceremonial pitches.

"That was a tough day," Mallory said. "My good friend Bob Castellini tried to console me that day. He put his arm around me and told me nobody's going to remember this tomorrow. Nice try, Bob."

Selig also announced that Major League Baseball was donating $1.5 million toward an urban youth academy in the city. It'll be baseball's seventh such academy, the first in the Midwest. It provides free instruction in baseball and softball, and has educational programs.

Workers' compensation claim challenges ? IIR Conferences Australia

NWCWith recent Workplace Health and Safety reform coming in to play at different times in different states, Australian businesses and individuals should be forgiven for being confused about how to best deal with workers? compensation claims.

In an effort to make sense of this continually developing area and to help fellow businesses and individuals within the industry, we asked a few OHS and workers? compensation specialists what workers? compensation claim challenges they have faced, to help you develop ways to avoid issues in the future.

What is the biggest challenge that you think businesses and individuals face when dealing with a workers? compensation claim and why?

Workers? compensation claims aren?t easy for anyone involved. Processes can seem confusing, overwhelming and take up a lot of time. Aside from the obvious impact on peoples lives, one of the biggest challenges we see with businesses is realising how much each claim goes beyond the premium payable and affects business operations, culture and the bottom line. We frequently work with employers who aren?t aware of how much can be done to prevent injuries or how to effectively manage claims when things don?t go right. Understanding these things and putting in place practical & sustainable solutions to minimise the impact of claims is critical to the overall success of a business.
Bernie Dean, General Manager, Prevention Strategy Division, Health and Safety, Worksafe Victoria

There are about 2 million businesses in Australia and more than 95% of these businesses employ less than 20 workers. Our workers compensation authorities report that annually about 120,000 Australian workers apply for and receive workers compensation. The facts are that for the vast majority of businesses, workers compensation claims are rare events. The reasons for this are another story and involve claims suppression, claim avoidance and a narrowing by governments of what is compensable. I think the biggest challenge facing workers is a lack of understanding of what are complex workers compensation systems. These are not easy systems to navigate. My advice to workers is always the same ? as soon as you are able to after a workplace injury ? get in contact with your union who can advise you of the best course of action for you to take.
Michael Borowick, Assistant Secretary, Australian Council Trade Union

The biggest challenge to a business is the variation in regulation around workers compensation and the impact it has on your financial position. The biggest challenge to the individual is the sense that the plan to recovery is out of your hands as the number of stakeholders can cloud the relationship.
Micheal Martin, National Safety and Risk Manager, Serco Sodexo Defence Services

Workers compensation is there to provide a safety net. By necessity it assumes that it is possible to separate work-related conditions from non-work-related conditions. The reality of the modern workplace is that the most common conditions: mental health problems and musculo-skeletal disorders can be caused by factors at work, environmental factors outside work and personal characteristics in combination. The biggest challenge for businesses and individuals when dealing with a workers? compensation claim is that workers compensation is unlikely to provide much of a solution, and may cause unintended harm.
Professor Niki Ellis CEO, ISCRR (Institute for Safety, Compensation and Recovery Research

The National Workers? Compensation Summit will be held on the 26th and 27th February 2013 in Surfers Paradise Queensland. Visit the official website for more information.
